Atonement

Intro:
Over the past few weeks in our series types and shadows we have looked at how:
Christ is the lamb of God who would take away the sins of the world.
How the layout of the temple represented the very plan of salvation.
How each year on the day of atonement Aaron the high priest would take two goats and present them to the Lord.
One was to be a sin offering for the people, and the other Aaron would lay his hands on the head of the goat and confess over it all the wickedness, rebellion, and sins of the people of Israel. This goat would be led away bearing the burden and weight of all their sin. In doing this each year the sins of the people would be covered or atoned for another year.
The revelation in the types and shadows is that they had to be done annually because they lacked the power to remove the effect of sin.
This truth once again leads us to Christ. Today we are going to look at Atonement and the power of the blood of Jesus.

As we begin let me quickly remind you of the passover and temple layout.
As a result of this first Passover and exodus from Egypt, three months later the people of Israel found themselves at Mount Sinai. There God gave instructions to Moses and the people on the building of the tabernacle. The entire tabernacle court was enclosed in a curtain.
As one entered the court, he saw the brazen altar and the laver, or large washbasin. Beyond this was the tabernacle in which only the priests could enter. The first part of the tabernacle or holy place contained the altar of incense, the table of showbread and the golden candlestick.
Beyond the holy place was the Holy of Holies, which contained the Ark of the Covenant. A veil or curtain separated the two places. Only the high priest could enter the Holy of Holies and then only once a year on the Day of Atonement to sprinkle blood on the mercy seat to atone for the sins of the people.
If the high priest ever entered the Holy of Holies without blood, he would be stricken dead. But this annual atonement was only temporary. It could only cover or appease sin.
The blood of animals could never permanently take away the guilt of sin. All that the Day of Atonement could do was prophetically point to the blood of the Coming One.
This morning we must understand the magnitude of what Christ has done. What couldn’t be accomplished through the blood of bulls and goats was accomplished in Christ.
The earthly sanctuary, priesthood, and its sacrificial system under the old covenant were the forerunners of what was to come.
Through the sacrificial death of Christ and the shedding of His blood we now have a better covenant based on better promises. Hebrews 8:4-6.
Hebrews 8:4-6 “For if He were on earth, He would not be a priest, since there are priests who offer the gifts according to the law; who serve the copy and shadow of the heavenly things, as Moses was divinely instructed when he was about to make the tabernacle. For He said, “See that you make all things according to the pattern shown you on the mountain.” But now He has obtained a more excellent ministry, inasmuch as He is also Mediator of a better covenant, which was established on better promises.”
Christ through His death has become the mediator and priest of a new covenant. Hebrews 9:11-12.
Hebrews 9:11-12 “But Christ came as High Priest of the good things to come, with the greater and more perfect tabernacle not made with hands, that is, not of this creation. Not with the blood of goats and calves, but with His own blood He entered the Most Holy Place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption.”

Why is all of this significant?
You receive Salvation through the Blood of Jesus. Ezekiel 18:20. Romans 6:23.
Ezekiel 18:20 says, “The soul who sins shall die...”
Romans 6:23 says, “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
All mankind has sinned. Romans 3:23.
Romans 3:23 “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,”
This means that all mankind is deserving of death.
Couple this with the understanding that the blood of bulls and goats was not enough to obtain redemption or salvation. This reality demonstrates the power of the Gospel!
When John declares Jesus as the lamb of God in John 1:29 he is declaring that it will no more be a type or shadow presented every year!!
This man Jesus Christ has come as the lamb of God and He will take away the sin of the world!! Glory to God!
When we call upon the name of the Lord we shall be saved! Romans 10:13 Once being far off we are brought near by the blood of Christ. Ephesians 2:13.
There is no more separation. There is no more veil! We are reconciled to the Father through Christ! Colossians 1:20-23. Hebrews 4:16.
Colossians 1:20-23 “and by Him to reconcile all things to Himself, by Him, whether things on earth or things in heaven, having made peace through the blood of His cross. And you, who once were alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now He has reconciled in the body of His flesh through death, to present you holy, and blameless, and above reproach in His sight—if indeed you continue in the faith, grounded and steadfast, and are not moved away from the hope of the gospel which you heard, which was preached to every creature under heaven, of which I, Paul, became a minister.”
Hebrews 4:16 Reminds us that we can “Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”
Through the blood of Jesus we are justified. Through the blood we are sanctified. Through the blood we are cleansed from all sin. 1 John 1:7. Hebrews 9:14.
1 John 1:7 “But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.” Hebrews 9:14 “how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?”
The blood of Jesus speaks a better word !! Hebrews 12:24 “to Jesus the Mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling that speaks better things than that of Abel.”
The blood of Abel cried out to God from the ground for vengeance and justice. Today, the blood of Jesus cries out MERCY! Right now it sits on the heavenly altar and it cries out Mercy! It is declaring sin is covered! The penalty is paid!! Victory has been won! Glory be to God!
Jesus is our great atonement!! We are no longer separated from the presence of God! We no longer need a priest to go on our behalf and offer sacrifices. Jesus our high priest has gone in once and for all! He has offered himself and we not have access to the presence of God! We now have fellowship with God!
We have been brought near by the precious blood of Jesus, but it doesn’t stop there!

Closing:
Jesus triumphed over all the powers of Darkness through His blood!
Jesus not only forgave and cleansed you from all your sins through His shed blood, Jesus also conquered for time and eternity all the powers of darkness through His blood. Adam’s disobedience empowered Satan to obtain a position of authority in the earth. Ephesians 2:1-3.
The result is seen in Ephesians 2:1-3 “And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins, in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience, among whom also we all once conducted ourselves in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, just as the others.”
Satan’s control was made possible by the unpaid penalty for man’s sin. Man would remain under the bondage of hell until sin was atoned for. Jesus wrestled from Satan all his power and authority by paying the wages of sin with His sinless blood. Colossians 2:15.
Colossians 2:15 “Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it.”
What does this mean for you and I?
Christians have power over all the powers of darkness through the blood of Jesus. Jesus shed blood brought victory and dominion over all the powers of darkness! This victory and dominion has been delegated to those who believe in Jesus Christ! Revelation 12:11.
Revelation 12:11 “And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the death.”
When the attacks of the enemy come against you, plead the blood of Jesus in prayer! Just like the Exodus declare that your life, your spouse, your children, and your future is covered under the blood!
We must understand this morning:
Satan cannot stand before the blood of Jesus when it is honored in faith. You as a Christian can overcome all weapons of the enemy, as you understand the power that you possess in the blood of Jesus.
The blood of Jesus is not just a defensive weapon, but an offensive weapon as well!
The benefits of the blood are not automatic. Just as the Israelites applied the blood to the doors in faith, you also will have to apply the blood by faith in your situation! It is claiming the victory of Jesus on the cross. The releasing of faith causes satan to flee, and the power of God to be on your side! 2 Corinthians 10:3-4.
Our weapons are not carnal but mighty through God! 2 Corinthians 10:3-4.
“For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds,”
Through the shedding of Christ blood our sins have been atoned.
We have a better covenant based on better promises.
We have a merciful high priest who is declaring mercy over us.
We have authority over the enemy through Jesus triumph!
Lets Pray!
My prayer today is that all who need it would receive the precious gift of salvation.
That God would gives us understanding of the power the blood of Jesus!
