Patterns of Prayer!

I am convinced almost everyone attempts prayer. Every religion would say prayer is an important part of their faith. But more than that even irreligious people pray.
WIKI Definition of prayer:
Prayer is an invocation or act that seeks to activate a rapport with an object of worship through deliberate communication. In the narrow sense, the term refers to an act of supplication or intercession directed towards a deity or a deified ancestor.
Every religion believers in the importance and the power of prayer.
Most everyone in the world acknowledges the importance of prayer!
For Christians prayer should be our lifeline.

Prayer is a discipline of dependence on God, and as such, it is the life breath of every disciple of Jesus.

Even as a non-Christian I attempted some prayers. Now I was not very good at them but I did attempt them.
Growing up I had some different kinds of prayers:
The Hail Mary Prayer-This is the Lord help me with this test.
Lord Help me succeed in this game prayer.
The fox hole prayer-I am about to die or am in real trouble so I better throw something up a prayer to someone now.
The religious Prayer-Do a ton of fancy language on this prayer- “Meet the Parents Prayer clip!”
The Ninja Prayer-He or she is at a Christian type of event and they just disappear because they don’t want to pray.
Then when I worked as a youth pastor I would just make kids pray, and even in a church setting where prayer is supposed to happen, not many people want to step out and pray.
We know prayer is important, I think everyone has tried praying but just because we try does not mean we are good about it .
Jesus knows prayer is important.

This is the fifth time that Luke referred to Jesus praying (3:21; 5:16; 6:12; 9:18, 28; cf. 22:32, 40–44; 23:46).

We must/can embrace these patterns of prayer:

1. We must embrace Jesus prayer pattern because prayer can be learned (1).

Context of this section in the book of Luke.
Luke 10:27 NASB95
And he answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.”
Then in Luke he goes onto show them how to relate to their neighbors (10:25-37), How to relate to him, the story of Martha and Mary (10:38-42) and now he is going to teach them how to relate to their heavenly father.
We must embrace these elements of prayer:
We can pray
Prayer is connected to discipleship!
Luke 11:1 NASB95
It happened that while Jesus was praying in a certain place, after He had finished, one of His disciples said to Him, “Lord, teach us to pray just as John also taught his disciples.”
Notice Jesus modeled prayer. He was at a certain place and this is what he was doing he was praying.
Notice Jesus modeled a lifestyle of prayer and these disciples who were with him for 3 years of his life say.
Mark 1:35 NASB95
In the early morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house, and went away to a secluded place, and was praying there.
Jesus could teach prayer because he lived a life of prayer.
They saw him and as a result they had a question for him.
Jesus, How do you do you pray?
Could you picture that you were so strong in a spiritual discipline that someone came to you and said can you teach me that.
This is the only time in the gospels that someone asked Jesus to teach them something.
The disciples did not need to know that prayer was important. They did not need to be convinced that prayer was true. That wanted pray that works.
“Prayer is a necessity of spiritual life, and all who earnestly try to pray soon feel the need of teaching how to do it.”

App:
You know it does not matter if you grow up in Church or not so many people feel uncomfortable praying.
I also want to say this to you.
Don’t allow praying right to keep you from praying.
Do you need someone to teach you to pray?
Do you need to pray with someone else?

2. We must embrace Jesus prayer pattern because He gives us the ingredients (2-4).

There is not one way to pray but there are certain ingredients that Jesus lays out for us.
Ingredient #1-His name to be made great.

“In the ‘Lord’s Prayer’ our Saviour gave us not merely an inexhaustible source of enlightenment in prayer, but also a perfect prayer which we must often address to God.”

Luke 11:2 NASB95
And He said to them, “When you pray, say: ‘Father, hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come.
When he mentions father this is an intimate way to say Father.
The fact that we can have intimacy with God should blow you your socks off.

The clause “hallowed be Your name” means: may everyone regard your name as holy (cf. Lev. 22:32; Ps. 79:9; 111:9; Isa. 29:23). God’s name is essentially the sum of His attributes, and effectively it is His reputation among people.

Great observation:

This petition is as much an expression of worship as it is a petition. It asks God to act so that people will regard Him as holy

God wants his name to be known among all the nations.
There are places in this world were God is more hallowed and placed in this world where God’s name is less hallowed.
God wants his name to be known more here in the United States.
How is God’s name doing here in the US.
Our very nation is rejecting the word of God.
List more bullet points here
Find the Jim Cymbals quote where he says in the old days Christians “could not pray” but they did.
We need to pray that God’s name would be even greater in our own life.
Andy in Christiana’s parents are in a place where Gods name is not very known and Gods desire is that those people would know his name more.
Ingredient #2-The coming of his kingdom
What I have loved about church planting is you realize pretty quick it was never about RCC, it was about the kingdom of God.
The church is the means that God wants to grow his kingdom!
Application Thought-
How Great is God’s name in your life?
What I love about this prayer, is I prayed this prayer even before I was a believer. It was powerful and I did not even understand it. But it starts with God and his kingdom. This will be a prayer I need to pray until I am face to face with Jesus because God can never be too big for my life.
Luke 11:3 NASB95
‘Give us each day our daily bread.
Ingredient #3-Trusting God’s provisions
In America we can make it really easy to not have to trust God for provisions.
When we ventured out into church planting we had to trust God. I mean, how are we going to pay rent in a couple of months.
But here is the reality whether you are a church planter or not this is an ingredient.
I think COVID showed all of us this reality.
Michael and Danni over COVID-Lost their job-I know they were praying this. And in those moments God providing for you guys like never before.
Ingredient #4-The power of forgiveness
Luke 11:4 NASB95
‘And forgive us our sins, For we ourselves also forgive everyone who is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation.’ ”
Forgiveness is not something that can be purchased. I have seen some of the richest people I know have their family destroyed over money. My point in telling you this is that forgiveness is not something that can be bought. People live in anger and frustration all over because they can’t receive forgiveness. If you can’t receive forgiveness it is really hard to give forgiveness.
We need forgiveness daily.
The more we grow inJesus the more I am convinced that more of the sins of our heart become exposed.
As believers we do not seize to sin.
Application:

3. We must embrace Jesus prayer pattern because persistence is illustrated (5-13).

There is never an inconvenient time to pray to God.
Luke 11:5–8 NASB95
Then He said to them, “Suppose one of you has a friend, and goes to him at midnight and says to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves; for a friend of mine has come to me from a journey, and I have nothing to set before him’; and from inside he answers and says, ‘Do not bother me; the door has already been shut and my children and I are in bed; I cannot get up and give you anything. “I tell you, even though he will not get up and give him anything because he is his friend, yet because of his persistence he will get up and give him as much as he needs.
We had a busy week this last week. This is our girls last out of town tourney until nationals. The boys went to Memphis. PLAY THIS OUT A LITTLE BIT. So we were home Thursday night and everyone was talking to me all at once a million miles an hour. At the time I was like that was too much. But here is the reality each of my kids felt comfortable to ask and tell me what they needed for this weekend.
The fact that God desires that we come to him lie our kids come to him is an amazing thought.
What we ask for and what we seek are directly connected.
Luke 11:9–10 NASB95
“So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. “For everyone who asks, receives; and he who seeks, finds; and to him who knocks, it will be opened.
The Character of the Father
Luke 11:11–13 NASB95
“Now suppose one of you fathers is asked by his son for a fish; he will not give him a snake instead of a fish, will he? “Or if he is asked for an egg, he will not give him a scorpion, will he? “If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him?”
