How not to pray
Matthew 6:5-8 (ESV)
5 “And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 6 But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
7 “And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.
Father…
What does Jesus say not to do when praying?
5 “And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward
Don’t put on a show or an act, don’t pretend.
7 “And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.
Justice..cereal…
Why ask God for things when he already knows what you want?
Also God is a loving father who gives us what we NEED, not necessarily what we WANT.
How to Pray
. 6 But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.
Revolutionary prayer
Exodus 3:5
English Standard Version (ESV)
5 Then he said, “Do not come near; take your sandals off your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground.”
is not saying that praying with others is
wrong, but you need to be able to pray on your
own (private prayer) as well as praying with others (public prayer).
Pray in a quiet place
Have everyone stand an say this prayer..??
Mathew 6:9-15 (ESV)
9 Pray then like this:
“Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, 10 Your kingdom come, your will be done,     on earth as it is in heaven. 11 Give us this day our daily bread, 12 and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. .
9 Pray then like this
these are the ingredients to talk to our father…
The prayer is broken in two parts…
Coming humbly before God
Petitioning God for our needs
“Our Father
Use of the word “our” instead of “my” shows us that prayer should not to be selfish. It also reminds us that we are part of God’s family - others are
our brothers and sisters because God is their father
too. We should treat all others like family members. The word ‘Father’ also teaches us that we should pray to God [the Father]. The parable of the Lost Son (Luke 15:11-32) shows us the kind of loving father God is.
Like a loving father, God listens to our prayers and always gives his best.
Sometimes, this may not always be exactly what we want - sometimes a loving parent even has to use the word no!

27 that they should seek God, and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him. Yet he is actually not far from each one of us, 28 for
“‘In him we live and move and have our being’;[a]
as even some of your own poets have said,
“‘For we are indeed his offspring.
hallowed be your name,
‘Hallowed’ means ‘holy’.
Keeping God’s name holy means that he should be honoured and respected

and admired for who he is and what he has done. “Hallowed be your name” is telling us to worship
God and to praise Him for who He is. We should
begin our prayers with worship to God because he
is so worthy of it.
Your kingdom come, your will be done,     on earth as it is in heaven
Dad.. my house…my rules..
Acknowledging This is God’s kingdom
surrendering to God and trusting his plans. It is a reminder to us that we are to pray for God’s
plan in our lives and the world, not our own plan. We are to pray for God’s will to be done, not for our own.
In heaven everyone submits to God – that is why it is heaven – there is no selfishness, no cruelty,
no lies – but plenty of love, peace and happiness.
11 Give us this day our daily bread,
‘Daily bread’ symbolizes everything we need for our life, for that day. Asking God to sustain us..we depend on God for daily physical and spiritual food.
Philippians 4:6 (ESV)
6 do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.
12 and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.
Pick up bag and say get rid of your rocks.. when your chained to someone else you can focus on God
13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. .
Protect us watch over us. We have to do our part. We have to know our path in life. Read Gods word
Psalm 32:8
English Standard Version (ESV)
8 I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go;     I will counsel you with my eye upon you.
