We have come to the end
The shadow of the cross is now upon us
as the scene opens today we see jesus struggling to carry his cross and a man is chosen to carry it for him
He is lead to the cross and crucified for all to see
A choice is required from you
Jesus’s death on the cross means we have to answer the question Pilate asks
English Standard Version Chapter 15
12 And Pilate again said to them, “Then what shall I do with the man you call the King of the Jews?”
Lets read this story
Read Mark 15:21-39
21 And they compelled a passerby, Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to carry his cross. 22 And they brought him to the place called Golgotha (which means Place of a Skull). 23 And they offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it. 24 And they crucified him and divided his garments among them, casting lots for them, to decide what each should take. 25 And it was the third hour when they crucified him. 26 And the inscription of the charge against him read, “The King of the Jews.” 27 And with him they crucified two robbers, one on his right and one on his left. 29 And those who passed by derided him, wagging their heads and saying, “Aha! You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, 30 save yourself, and come down from the cross!” 31 So also the chief priests with the scribes mocked him to one another, saying, “He saved others; he cannot save himself. 32 Let the Christ, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross that we may see and believe.” Those who were crucified with him also reviled him.
33 And when the sixth hour had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour. 34 And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” 35 And some of the bystanders hearing it said, “Behold, he is calling Elijah.” 36 And someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a reed and gave it to him to drink, saying, “Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to take him down.” 37 And Jesus uttered a loud cry and breathed his last. 38 And the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. 39 And when the centurion, who stood facing him, saw that in this way he breathed his last, he said, “Truly this man was the Son of God!”
The Mockery
The Mockery
Read Mark 15:22-31
A theme mark returns us too the mockery of jesus by the crowds
They have seen all that Jesus has done and they have obviously heard his words
Yet the mock him none the less
He is crucified along with robbers
Isaiah he is numbered with transgressors
He is just a man hanging on cross
Just another Roman Crucifixion
Mark wants us to understand what is happening here is the culmination of what Jesus has come do
To save himself would be the exact opposite of what he has been called to do
To save himself would mean is not the ransom to be paid for the many
Just let us see one more sign then we will believe
He saved others but cant save himself surely the messiah would save himself
Completly missing the point of what he is doing
All the other miracles saved people fro this life
HIs death will save them from eternal seperation from God
The Death
Read Mark 15:32-37
In the most dramatic of fashions Jesus gives up his life
The sky is dark at noon
Then Jesus cries out
his first words since submitting his will to the father in the garden
short of a few statements
My God My god why have you forsaken me
in that moment feeling for the first time the seperation from the father because of the crushing weight of the sin that falls on his shoulders
He gives up his life
Its mine to give up
18 No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This charge I have received from my Father.”
He gives his life ransoming the many
The testimony
Read Mark 15:38-39
38 And the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. 39 And when the centurion, who stood facing him, saw that in this way he breathed his last, he said, “Truly this man was the Son of God!”
The holy of holies is split in two
the place only the high priest was allowed and only on the day of atonment is opened up to all
The preist is no longer needed for atonment
