Welcome and Happy Palm Sunday!!!
We are taking a break from our Genesis study for the next 3 weeks to do our “Exalted” Mini Series.
Super pumped as we are talking about
Exaltation of Jesus on Palm Sunday Week1
Week 2 Easter Sunday
Jesus’ Resurrection(invite all your friends, family, grocery store people, drive thru Taco Bell Folks....Taco bell first time in years...
Week 3 We are going to talk about what’s next? in a teaching Called Identity Crisis
Background for Context
Jesus has been teaching, healing, and even forgave sins
The pharisees (religious leaders) are fed up....It is about to reach the boiling point and they have already discussed wanting to kill him
Today We are going to look at Jesus Entering Jerusalem....
Some of your Bibles May even
say the Triumphal Entry
This is the start of Holy Week (Jesus’ Last week)
Jesus came and went out of places and did not do grand entrances, in fact often snuck out and told people it was not his time yet
We are going to look at some cool things as we go through the passage but I want to hit a couple main things for sure.
For starters this Passage is Jesus fulfilling Prophesy
Jesus fulfilled over 300 Prophecies and counting.
He still has some he WILL fulfill
Think about this though. Over 300....
I nerd out on math sometimes.. This guy Peter Stoner was a mathematician.
In 1944, He authored a book called Science Speaks: on probability of scriptures.
He did his research and submitted it to the American Scientific Affiliation which deemed “the mathematical analysis included is based upon principles of probability which are thoroughly sound.”
Now he did probabilities of all kinds of things, including the prophecies.
Some higher probability than others.
For Instance,
The Messiah will be betrayed for 30 pieces of silver (Zechariah 11:12).
Of the people who have been betrayed, one in how many has been betrayed for exactly 30 pieces of silver? Estimate: 1 in 1,000 or 1×103.
The betrayal money will be used to purchase a potter’s field (Zechariah 11:13).
One man in how many, after receiving a bribe for the betrayal of a friend, has returned the money, had it refused, and then experienced it being used to buy a potter’s field?
Estimate: 1 in 100,000 or 1×105.
8 prophecies being fulfilled accidently in the life of one person. That probability is 1in 1017 or 1 in 100,000,000,000,000,000. That’s one in one hundred quadrillion!
Keep in mind that Jesus did not just fulfill 8 prophecies, He fulfilled 108. The chances of fulfilling 16 is 1 in 10 45. When you get to a total of 48, the odds increase to 1 in 10157. Accidental fulfillment of these prophecies is simply beyond the realm of possibility.
(folder of prophecy)
Prophecies that will written Hundreds, Thousands of year before Jesus.
More than 500 years
Marshal your troops now, city of troops,
for a siege is laid against us.
They will strike Israel’s ruler
on the cheek with a rod.
They spit on him, and took the staff and struck him on the head again and again.
More than 800 Years before Jesus
They divide my clothes among them
and cast lots for my garment.
Brief
When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his clothes, dividing them into four shares, one for each of them, with the undergarment remaining. This garment was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom.
“Let’s not tear it,” they said to one another. “Let’s decide by lot who will get it.”
This happened that the scripture might be fulfilled that said,
“They divided my clothes among them
and cast lots for my garment.”
So this is what the soldiers did.
Even as Early as Immediately after the fall of Man God spoke to the serpent
(Brief)
Genesis 3:14–15 (NIV)
So the Lord God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this,
“Cursed are you above all livestock
and all wild animals!
You will crawl on your belly
and you will eat dust
all the days of your life.
And I will put enmity
between you and the woman,
and between your offspring and hers;
he will crush your head,
and you will strike his heel.”
Why do I bring this up??
We have No deniability that Jesus is Messiah....He gives us fulfillment of prophecy for us! so that we may have faith in what we know.
People may argue that Jesus Knew all the prophecies and thus fulfilled them intentionally. To that I would say I agree.. However, He also fulfilled prophecy that He himself did not do, but that was done to him.
II.We are going to look at a couple different sections that cover this…
Cop Interviews
After Jesus had said this, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. As he approached Bethphage and Bethany at the hill called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples, saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ say, ‘The Lord needs it.’ ”
Those who were sent ahead went and found it just as he had told them. As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them, “Why are you untying the colt?”
They replied, “The Lord needs it.”
They brought it to Jesus, threw their cloaks on the colt and put Jesus on it.
A. Jesus sends out the two
This specific event was prophesied in Zechariah 9:9
Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion!
Shout, Daughter Jerusalem!
See, your king comes to you,
righteous and victorious,
lowly and riding on a donkey,
on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
Now this prophecy could have been fulfilled with or without the disciples, but Jesus chose to use them.
He did not need them he chose them.
Not only did he choose them,
He IS OMNISCIENT meaning HE KNOWS ALL.
He demonstrates by telling them specifically where to go and also what to say if someone addresses them about this.
We also know he knew peter would deny him 3 times.
B. He entered on a donkey....not a war horse.....
Represents Peace and Humility , not a seige
III.
As he went along, people spread their cloaks on the road.
When he came near the place where the road goes down the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud voices for all the miracles they had seen:
“Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!”
“Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”
Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples!”
“I tell you,” he replied, “if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out.”
A. Laying cloaks on road (John 12:13 Tells us they laid down palms - A Way to Recognize him as Royalty (The Messiah/ Savior)
They quickly took their cloaks and spread them under him on the bare steps. Then they blew the trumpet and shouted, “Jehu is king!”
B. about 3/4 mile
a ton of people there for passover. Josephus scholar would say about 2 million people would travel to jerusalem for passover.
2. Shouting !!
“Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”
Matt, Mark, John INclude
Hosanna! Son of David
Hosanna- SAVE US
addressing Him as the Savior.
Disciples did not understand until this!!!!!
At first his disciples did not understand all this. Only after Jesus was glorified did they realize that these things had been written about him and that these things had been done to him.
C. John 12:17-19 Pharisees
Now the crowd that was with him when he called Lazarus from the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to spread the word. Many people, because they had heard that he had performed this sign, went out to meet him. So the Pharisees said to one another, “See, this is getting us nowhere. Look how the whole world has gone after him!”
Some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to Jesus, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples!”
“I tell you,” he replied, “if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out.”
IV.
As he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over it and said, “If you, even you, had only known on this day what would bring you peace—but now it is hidden from your eyes. The days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment against you and encircle you and hem you in on every side. They will dash you to the ground, you and the children within your walls. They will not leave one stone on another, because you did not recognize the time of God’s coming to you.”
David Guzik
e. Days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment around you: Jesus predicted five specific aspects of the Roman attack upon Jerusalem:
· The building of an embankment.
· The surrounding of the city, laying siege.
· The destruction of the city.
· The killing of the city’s inhabitants.
· The complete leveling of the city.
i. The historian Josephus described in detail the embankment around Jerusalem; how it utterly shut up the city before the Romans totally destroyed them (Wars of the Jews, 5.12.1-3).
ii. From Josephus: “All hope of escaping was now cut off from the Jews, together with their liberty of going out of the city. Then did the famine widen its progress, and devour the people by whole houses and families; the upper rooms of women and infants that were dying by famine, and the lanes of the city were full of the dead bodies of the aged; the children also, and the young men wandered about the market places like shadows, all swelled with the famine, and fell down dead wheresoever their misery seized them. For a time the dead were buried; but afterwards, when they could not do that, they had them cast down from the wall into the valleys beneath. When Titus, on going his rounds along these valleys, saw them full of dead bodies, and the thick purification running about them, he gave a groan, and spreading out his hands to heaven, called God to witness this was not his doing.” (Cited in Spurgeon. He adds: “There is nothing in history to exceed this horror. But even this is nothing compared with the destruction of a soul.”)
CLosing
SAD because Jesus knows what is in the hearts that he came to save and many deny him.
Even amongst those shouting hosanna by the end of the week many will be screaming crucify
These people saw the Savior of the world, and tried to Have Jesus fit their Life..Their wants,
They wanted the messiah to be in their expectations,
Jesus surpasses all that
He offered something far better than what they “wanted”
Jesus did come to save and he will accomplish what he set out to do by the end of the week.
Are you Exalting Jesus for your own selfish ambitions or are we exalting Jesus for his Glory and will, whatever that may look like?
