Palm Sunday
Sing - Hosanna (Praise Is Rising) - offertory
Youth Palm Parade to Hosanna
Video: Call To Worship: Palm Sunday
What Does Hosanna mean?
The term Hosanna meant: Save Us Now! and may have been an Aramaic idiom meaning “royal power to”
Why Palms?
Palm Branches - symbol of national identity. Much like a flag.
Why Cloaks?
Laying them down and spreading their cloaks - a recognition of Jesus’ kingship. Rolling out the red carpet...
Why a Donkey?
The donkey was the mount of the king. The king had a royal donkey on which no one but he ever rode
Riding on a colt.
Unbroken, untamed. Jesus would be the first to ride on it. This was that royal donkey on which no one but the king ever rode. It is the King’s Donkey.
A colt was a symbol of peace. Riding in as the Prince of Peace, rather than the King of Victory.
The donkey colt was also a symbol of humility.
Why Children?
It’s like the after party and the kids are repeating and singing what they heard the adults doing earlier in the day.
Faith like a child. The religious elite were blind and did not have the same insight as the children.
The children are speaking truth before the adults can even accept it.
Matthew 21.1-11
Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout in triumph, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; He is just and endowed with salvation, Humble, and mounted on a donkey, Even on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord; We have blessed you from the house of the Lord.
Son Of David - Messianic Title.
“Previously, when Saul was king over us, you were the one who led Israel out and in. And the Lord said to you, ‘You will shepherd My people Israel, and you will be a ruler over Israel.’ ”
“Your house and your kingdom shall endure before Me forever; your throne shall be established forever.” ’ ”
Behold Your King
Interesting to note that Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a Sunday.
Passover was one of the 3 required feasts for all men to come to Jerusalem.
Every year security was beefed up because of the known prophecy of the Messiah.
For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; And the government will rest on His shoulders; And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.
“Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. “Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
Who Is This?
The Jerusalem crowd would have been unfamiliar to them, but to the crowd who apparently was made up of many from Galilee, knew this was Jesus and they were escorting Him in and declaring to the public that He is the long prophesied one.
This Is The Prophet Jesus
“The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your countrymen, you shall listen to him.
This is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent to him priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?” And he confessed and did not deny, but confessed, “I am not the Christ.” They asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” And he said, “I am not.” “Are you the Prophet?” And he answered, “No.”
There were 3 specific individuals the Jews were waiting for and they were all connected.
The Christ - the anointed one, the Messiah
Elijah
The Prophet like Moses
Then He Enters The Temple.
Probably the next day. Monday.
The temple had to be cleansed. Before the sacrifices began in the tabernacle in the wilderness, the tabernacle and all its furnishings were “cleansed”.
The Messiah was purifying the people’s worship in readiness for the great day of the Lord.
3 days later...
The Last Supper.
cup 1 - I will bring you out.
cup 2 - I will deliver you.
cup 3 - I will redeem you.
cup 4 - I will acquire you (make you my people.)
cup 5 - I will bring you into the land; the cup of Elijah:
left undrunk at the Seder meal as something to be fulfilled.
heralding the final and ultimate redemption
The complete deliverance of God’s people from the wages of sin.
God’s wrath on the nations. Drive the wickedness out of the land and then take possession of it.
“Behold, I am going to send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and terrible day of the Lord. “He will restore the hearts of the fathers to their children and the hearts of the children to their fathers, so that I will not come and smite the land with a curse.”
The Passover Lamb
In order for that to happen. Jesus had to be the Passover Lamb.
Take this cup from me.
Drink the cup of God’s wrath.
The Soldiers Come
Jesus arrested.
Brought to Pilate. What Is Truth? Last Week.
Scourged. Another attempt at compromise. He hoped the crowd would be satisfied with a little blood.
A Mocking Worship
In their mocking they are proclaiming the truth and declaring what is to be. Their mocking is establishing and bringing to fruition the prophecy.
Crown of Thorns placed on His head
What was the curse on the ground? Jesus takes the curse of the ground upon Himself.
Irony - the word used for crown here is stephanos which is the crown given to the victor in the games, and figuratively was a symbol of the reward of eternal life, or the laurel wreath worn by the emperor.
Purple Robe
Color of Royalty
Slaps Instead of Kisses
“Hail King of the Jews”
He was despised and forsaken of men, A man of sorrows and acquainted with grief; And like one from whom men hide their face He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.
Surely our griefs He Himself bore, And our sorrows He carried; Yet we ourselves esteemed Him stricken, Smitten of God, and afflicted.
Behold, the Man!
Could be Pilate’s derogatory mocking of Jesus. Look at this frail, weak, whipped, pathetic figure.
He’s just a mere mortal…
Sure He’s got a crown and robe, but seriously, does this look like a King? Does this look like a rebel rouser? Does this look like a Zealot? Does this look like one who is trying to overthrow Rome?
But, Jesus’ favorite term for Himself was the Son of Man.
“I kept looking in the night visions, And behold, with the clouds of heaven One like a Son of Man was coming, And He came up to the Ancient of Days And was presented before Him. “And to Him was given dominion, Glory and a kingdom, That all the peoples, nations and men of every language Might serve Him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion Which will not pass away; And His kingdom is one Which will not be destroyed.
I find no guilt in Him. vs. 6 -
Innocent one.
This is the 3rd declaration of innocence. John 18.38; John 19.4.
But He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, And by His scourging we are healed.
All of us like sheep have gone astray, Each of us has turned to his own way; But the Lord has caused the iniquity of us all To fall on Him.
Son of God
Jesus made Himself out to be the Son of God. vs 7
Where are you from? - vs. 9
Jesus had already told him his kingdom was not of this world.
Pilate had already asked, “What is truth?” Jesus had already declared that those on the side of truth listen to Him. Pilate obviously had not listened.
Jesus Gave No Answer
He was oppressed and He was afflicted, Yet He did not open His mouth; Like a lamb that is led to slaughter, And like a sheep that is silent before its shearers, So He did not open His mouth.
For you have been called for this purpose, since Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example for you to follow in His steps, who committed no sin, nor was any deceit found in His mouth; and while being reviled, He did not revile in return; while suffering, He uttered no threats, but kept entrusting Himself to Him who judges righteously;
vs. 10 - To me, you do not speak? I have the authority to release you or crucify you?
The one given authority is speaking to THE one who gives authority. The judge is speaking to THE judge.
vs. 11 - You would not have any authority over Me, unless it had been given you from above...
Irony seeing as Pilate just declared he was speaking to one who has authority.
Pleasing the crowd...
vs. 12 - Pilate made efforts to release Him...
If you release this Man...
The Bema Seat
vs. 13 - referred to as the Bema seat. Stephanos...
Behold, your King! Proclamation.
Palm Sunday - fulfilled - vs. 14
irony - King of the Jews - we have no king but Caesar - Son of God - blasphemy,
The Jews are claiming loyalty to Rome, while disclaiming their Messiah. They themselves were blaspheming God by claiming their king was Caesar.
Don’t write “The King of the Jews,” but rather he claimed to be the king of the Jews.”
I have written what I have written.
Pilate’s final dig at the Jews. In essence saying, “Jews, you have killed your own King,”
The Titles Of Jesus Used And Abused

Behold Your King
Ultimately, Palm Sunday is a foreshadowing of Heaven.
After these things I looked, and behold, a great multitude which no one could count, from every nation and all tribes and peoples and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed in white robes, and palm branches were in their hands;
