ADVICE DAD NEVER GAVE YOU

Ralph Sorter

Our church family has been truly blessed with the gift of life…there are children everywhere and there’s a new baby in church every time I turn around.  I love holding babies and saying a blessing upon them in my mind.  Frequently I’m thinking…this baby in my arms will someday be a man…a woman.  What will they be?

Parents, do you have those thoughts for your child?  Visions of their future inspire us raise them up in the ways of the Lord, for the future holds more challenges than they can handle on their own.  So I have something for you to ponder: If this is their most moldable age, how can you best point them in the right direction?

It doesn’t take very long before you realize they woke up one day very stubborn and are not as moldable.  It happens a lot sooner than you want, so I urge you to make use of those precious years before they blow away with the sands of independence.

Here’s another question to ponder: What have you learned from hard experiences that you want them to avoid?  Training your child to listen to the advice of others is the most valuable character trait you can instill in your children.  Believe me…the day will come when they won’t listen and do things their own way.  If you have instilled in them the precious attitude of listening to your wisdom without testing the thin ice on the pond, your child will develop into the greatest of men and women.

Finally, consider: How can you train them to trust and listen to the voice of the Lord?  The day will come when this child in your arms will move away…the day will come when you will be gone and they won’t even be able to pick up the phone to ask for advise.  But if you have instilled within them a habit from their early days that the Lord is always there to call upon, you can go to your grave in peace knowing they will make their way just fine.

This baby you now hold in your arms…what will they turn out to be?
