Advice #69
ADVICE DAD NEVER GAVE YOU
Ralph Sorter
Guys, stop reading right here – this message isn’t meant for you – it’s meant for your wife. Don’t even hand this to them and say, “Here, you need to read this.” Let the Holy Spirit do His own work.
“I promise to love, honor and obey…’till death do us part.” Remember those vows ladies? I’d like to challenge you with the middle word of those three. Honoring your husband doesn’t end with changing your last name on your wedding day. It’s something that is lived out every day…and more importantly, when he isn’t even around.
I was around a lady the other day from another church that gave accolade after accolade to a man she respected. Granted this other man was a youth minister to her children, but after it kept going and going I began to wonder if she had feelings for the man. I remember wondering if she spoke this well of her husband. A couple of days later I was with her and her husband together. Sure enough, she even cut him down in his presence. I felt sorry for him.
Proverbs 31:23 says, “Her husband is known in the gates when he sits among the elders of the land.” Why is her husband known among the elders? It’s implied that it’s because she has talked about him there.
Honoring your husband is lived out with respect, gracious words about him, praise for his strengths, and quiet submission even when you don’t agree with him. Honoring him when he is in your presence is good, but doing it when he isn’t even around is the real acid test of whether you honor him.
Just a couple verses later, King Lemuel wrote, “Her husband praises her saying, ‘Many daughters have done nobly, but you excel them the most.’” Do you see it? Because she honored him, the praise and honor came right back upon her. If this king had many wives (as many of them did in those days), then this one stood out from the rest for her honorable words when he was absent. Something to think about.
