-Romans 1-3 = our need, we are sinners Gentiles and Jews alike and none of us are righteous on our own, so how can we be right with God? Through faith in Christ alone
21 But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it—
22 the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction:
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
24 and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,
25 whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins.
26 It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.
27 Then what becomes of our boasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law? By a law of works? No, but by the law of faith.
28 For we hold that one is justified by faith apart from works of the law.
29 Or is God the God of Jews only? Is he not the God of Gentiles also? Yes, of Gentiles also,
30 since God is one—who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through faith.
31 Do we then overthrow the law by this faith? By no means! On the contrary, we uphold the law.
How are we made right with God?
1 God has Revealed His Righteousness
1 God has Revealed His Righteousness
21 But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it—
-manifested = to reveal, to make clear
-How has the righteousness of God been revealed apart from the Law? Through the person and work of Jesus Christ
14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
15 (John bore witness about him, and cried out, “This was he of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me ranks before me, because he was before me.’ ”)
16 For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace.
17 For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.
18 No one has ever seen God; the only God, who is at the Father’s side, he has made him known.
9 who saved us and called us to a holy calling, not because of our works but because of his own purpose and grace, which he gave us in Christ Jesus before the ages began,
10 and which now has been manifested through the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel,
-the law and the prophets bear witness to it, God has revealed this gift of righteousness throughout the whole Bible
26 but has now been disclosed and through the prophetic writings has been made known to all nations, according to the command of the eternal God, to bring about the obedience of faith—
2 We are Made Righteous only by Faith in the death and resurrection of Christ
2 We are Made Righteous only by Faith in the death and resurrection of Christ
22 the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction:
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
24 and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,
20 For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin.
21 so that, as sin reigned in death, grace also might reign through righteousness leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
-this is how we have been made righteous through Christ
25 whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins.
26 It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.
-propitiation = satisfying the wrath of God (because of our sin) through the atoning sacrifice of Christ, in other words it is the love of God
10 In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
-it was to show the righteousness of God that He cannot allow sin, that it has to be dealt with and it is either through the sacrificial death of Jesus and your faith in Him or in an eternity in hell
8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
9 Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God.
-And it is faith in what Christ has done, it is total dependence on Christ, it is complete surrender to Him as Lord
Martin Luther - Faith is a firm trust that Christ the Son of God stands in our place

31 Do we then overthrow the law by this faith? By no means! On the contrary, we uphold the law.
-what becomes of our boasting?
2 For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God.
29 so that no human being might boast in the presence of God.
30 And because of him you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, righteousness and sanctification and redemption,
31 so that, as it is written, “Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.”
8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God,
9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast.
What is our glory? What is our claim? It cannot be in ourselves, it has to be to glory in Christ Jesus. To boast that Jesus is Lord, that Jesus has brought us to the Father, that we have been redeemed by the blood of the Lamb, my friend I ask you today are you trusting in your works? Or have you trusted in the sacrificial death of Christ on the cross for your sins, do you glory in Jesus?
-Right now I ask you to seek God in prayer, as Sonya plays softly may you reflect on the Word of God
