Jesus Changes Everything
John 20:19-22
INTRODUCTION
Have you had days that have changed your life?
Wedding.
Birth of child.
Death of loved one.
Sickness.
The disciples - had been called to leave all behind. 3 years later… the one who called had died.
They didn’t understand that that death had just changed everything.
16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
The greatest gift-giver gives the greatest gift.
The Cross
The Resurrection
19 On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being locked where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.”
20 When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord.
21 Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.”
22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit.
The resurrection changed everything. The cross paid for our sin but it left the followers without hope. Lots of people died on a cross. The resurrection was the great miracle that gives us hope. It proved why he died. He died to give us life.
The resurrection provided 4 gifts.
4 Gifts That Change Everything
4 Gifts That Change Everything
1. Peace (19)
1. Peace (19)
19 On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being locked where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.”
Locked doors because of fear.
fear is opposite of faith.
Everything is scary in the dark. Unknown.
The reality is there is nothing there.
ILL- Kids in the dark- tun on lights. Nothing changes except what you can see.
Jesus wants to give you peace.
2. Joy (20)
2. Joy (20)
20 When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord.
That which was bringing them sorrow now brings them joy.
The cross- the evidence of the cross.- hands and feet.
Jesus wants to give you joy.
3. Purpose (21)
3. Purpose (21)
21 Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I am sending you.”
They had been roaming without purpose.
They had scattered and then came back together.
They are going to go fishing- it was what they did before they followed Jesus.
What do they do with their life?
Peter will continue to struggle with this in John 21.
“Do you love me?” “Feed my sheep.”
Jesus wants to give you purpose.
4. Power (22)
4. Power (22)
22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit.
It was not about their power. It is about God’s power.
Uneducated fishermen became leaders of a movement that changed the world.
They get a taste of that which would soon became the permanent dwelling of the Spirit at Pentecost.
They are not allowed to fulfill the mission without the Holy Spirit.
We are not called to live the Christian life in our own power. We are given a helper.
7 Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.
8 And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment:
26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.
CONCLUSION
Peace, joy, purpose and power are possible because of the payment for your sin Jesus paid on the cross.
Admit that you are a sinner.
Believe that Jesus rose from the grace.
Confess him to be your Lord= surrender to him.
9 because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
Stop trying to do it on you own. Give your life to him.
Jesus is offering these gifts to you. Will you accept them?
