Gethsemane
Gethsemane
Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane, and he told the disciples, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” Taking along Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, he began to be sorrowful and troubled. He said to them, “I am deeply grieved to the point of death. Remain here and stay awake with me.” Going a little farther, he fell facedown and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.”
Then he came to the disciples and found them sleeping. He asked Peter, “So, couldn’t you stay awake with me one hour? Stay awake and pray, so that you won’t enter into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
Again, a second time, he went away and prayed, “My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, your will be done.” And he came again and found them sleeping, because they could not keep their eyes open.
After leaving them, he went away again and prayed a third time, saying the same thing once more. Then he came to the disciples and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? See, the time is near. The Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. Get up; let’s go. See, my betrayer is near.”
They had just finnished up with the last supper.
As they finnished up Jesus was praying for the disciples.
What was JESUS afraid of in the Garden?
He went out and made his way as usual to the Mount of Olives, and the disciples followed him. When he reached the place, he told them, “Pray that you may not fall into temptation.” Then he withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, knelt down, and began to pray, “Father, if you are willing, take this cup away from me—nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.”
Then an angel from heaven appeared to him, strengthening him. Being in anguish, he prayed more fervently, and his sweat became like drops of blood falling to the ground. When he got up from prayer and came to the disciples, he found them sleeping, exhausted from their grief. “Why are you sleeping?” he asked them. “Get up and pray, so that you won’t fall into temptation.”
An angel was sent to strengthen Jesus.
His sweat became like drops of blood falling to the ground. (Olive Press)
We see that the disciples was exhausted from their grief.
So lets take this back to Matthew and see if helps us understand more of Jesus grief.
Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane, and he told the disciples, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” Taking along Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, he began to be sorrowful and troubled. So we asked the question What is Jesus afraid of in the Garden?
Is it death? He know in three days He will return. So I don’t believe that is it.
I believe that the thing that has sorrowful and troubed is that He will be facing the wrath of GOD the Father.
This is weighing down on Him so hard that He is sweating drops of blood.
This is why the Father sent an Angel to comfort Him.
I have tried to put myself in the shoe of the Father and I can truly understand how He could love us enough to go though with this.
Jesus ask if there is any other way. (There is no other way)
“Yet not as I will, but as you will” disobedience brought sin in the world and Obedience will cover it.
Could you not pray for one hour, I look at this and wonder if we pray enough.
As you read this ask the question does Christ care for you? I seem clear when you see what He was willing to go through for our chance of Salvation.
Action to take
Spend time this week praying and thinking of what Christ has done for you.
Shot for a hour a day. This doesn’t have to be straight.
Easter is next see if this doesn’t make you want to praise HIM even more next Sunday.
