Introduction

Greetings…
Theme:
Hope:
Last week, we discussed the Holy Spirit’s Personality.
He is, without a doubt, one who possess knowledge, emotions, and will
.Today, we will be turning our attention to the “Holy Spirit In Salvation.”

The Spirit Leads Us

Through The Word.

First, by way of inspiring the word of God.
It cannot be said enough that the Holy Spirit is the one that has given us, written down, the mind of God.
1 Corinthians 2:10 ESV
10 these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God.
2 Peter 1:20–21 ESV
20 knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone’s own interpretation. 21 For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.
Second, by way of the word’s wording.
By that I mean that God’s word is written in such a way that a person seeking truth will find truth and their hearts will be open to obedience to the truth.
John 8:32 (ESV)
32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.
Matthew 7:7–8 ESV
7 “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.
Acts 2:37 ESV
37 Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?”
Acts 16:14 ESV
14 One who heard us was a woman named Lydia, from the city of Thyatira, a seller of purple goods, who was a worshiper of God. The Lord opened her heart to pay attention to what was said by Paul.
Acts 16:13 (NASB)
13 And on the Sabbath day we went outside the gate to a riverside, where we were supposing that there would be a place of prayer; and we sat down and began speaking to the women who had assembled.
Ephesians 5:26 (ESV)
26 that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word

Summary

It’s important to point out here, due to the vast misinformation out there, that God does not appoint special people today to be illuminated concerning the word.
There is no preacher, no pastor, today that has some special connection with the Holy Spirit wherein the scriptures are concerned as the word is for everyone and it is personal study & reasoning that illuminates the scriptures not the Holy Spirit.
2 Timothy 2:15 (ESV)
15 Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.
Word is “self-sufficient” in the sense that anyone that can use reason, can simply read and study it with an open heart and understand it.
Ephesians 3:4 ESV
4 When you read this, you can perceive my insight into the mystery of Christ,
Acts 17:11 ESV
11 Now these Jews were more noble than those in Thessalonica; they received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so.
So, we find the Spirit’s role in salvation is found in inspiring the holy writ.
But his role isn’t complete there, no we also find…

The Spirit Seals Us

During Immersion.

The eternal Spirit (Hebrews 9:14) sanctifies us during baptism when we are being freed from our sin by Christ’s blood (Revelation 1:5).
1 Peter 1:1–2 (ESV)
1 Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who are elect exiles of the Dispersion in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, 2 according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in the sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and for sprinkling with his blood: May grace and peace be multiplied to you.
Romans 15:16 (ESV)
16 to be a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles in the priestly service of the gospel of God, so that the offering of the Gentiles may be acceptable, sanctified by the Holy Spirit.
1 Corinthians 6:11 (ESV)
11 And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.
To sanctify means to “set apart,” in this case, for God but how does the Holy Spirit set us apart from the world?
The Holy Spirit sanctifies us, at least in part, during baptism through a renewal which means to make like new, restore.
Titus 3:5 (ESV)
5 he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit
We find the Spirit restores/renews us back to perfection by making us a “new creation.”
2 Corinthians 5:17 (ESV)
17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.
Part of being a “new creation” is being renewed in the Spirit of our mind during baptism, i.e., we think spiritually now not carnally.
Ephesians 4:20–24 (ESV)
20 But that is not the way you learned Christ!— 21 assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus, 22 to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, 23 and to be renewed in the Spirit of your minds, 24 and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.
Lastly, we find the Holy Spirit during baptism/immersion, gives us a gift.
This gift of the Holy Spirit is promised to all right after they have their sins washed away.
Acts 2:38 ESV
38 And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
What is this gift?
This gift that belongs to those whose sins have been forgiven i.e., believers (Acts 5:14), is the Holy Spirit himself as our seal from God.
Ephesians 1:11–12 ESV
11 In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will, 12 so that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of his glory.
Ephesians 1:13–14 (ESV)
13 In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.
2 Corinthians 1:22 ESV
22 and who has also put his seal on us and given us his Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.
This is why if you don’t have the Spirit you have not been saved.
Romans 8:9 ESV
9 You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him.
Now that one has obeyed the gospel, been freed from sin, sanctified, and renewed, is there anything the Holy Spirit does…

After Immersion.

Sure there is and it isn’t just a couple of things.
In fact, we find the Holy Spirit blesses us greatly after we have come out of that watery grave through his indwelling.
The Holy Spirit indwelling us helps us put to death the sin in our lives after baptism.
Romans 8:12–13 ESV
12 So then, brothers, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. 13 For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.
The Holy Spirit indwelling us strengthens our inner being.
Ephesians 3:16 (ESV)
16 that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being
Ephesians 3:20 (ESV)
20 Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us
The Holy Spirit indwelling us develops his fruit in us through the word.
Galatians 5:22–25 ESV
22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. 24 And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 If we live by the Spirit, let us also keep in step with the Spirit.
The Holy Spirit indwelling us helps us abound in hope due to a deep love for the Father cultivated by the Spirit by way of the word.
Galatians 4:6 ESV
6 And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!”
Romans 15:13 ESV
13 May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.
The Holy Spirit indwelling us helps us in our weakest moments.
Romans 8:26–27 ESV
26 Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. 27 And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.

Summary

The eternal Spirit does so much not only when we are having our sins washed away but so much more even after.

Conclusion

Just because we do not always understand how the Holy Spirit works does not mean we are not in need of him.
Many of the things we have looked at I cannot fully explain but I know he acts and does those things because he loves us.
Invitation
Isaiah 59:1–2 ESV
1 Behold, the Lord’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save, or his ear dull, that it cannot hear; 2 but your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that he does not hear.
Philippians 2:6–7 ESV
6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.
Romans 10:17 ESV
17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.
Hebrews 11:6 ESV
6 And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.
Acts 17:30 ESV
30 The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent,
Matthew 10:32 NKJV
32 “Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven.
2 Thessalonians 1:8 ESV
8 in flaming fire, inflicting vengeance on those who do not know God and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus.
1 Corinthians 15:1–4 ESV
1 Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, 2 and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. 3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures,
Romans 6:3–5 ESV
3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his.
1 John 1:7 ESV
7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.
