“Three Admonitions For God’s People”
“Three decisions we all must make for the sake of the world.”
1 Corinthians 15:58
“Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.”
I- Be Steadfast (v.58a).
A- Be steadfast in doctrine. “be ye stedfast” (v.58a)
· Like early disciples
· (Acts 2:42) “And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.”
1- It does matter what you believe.
(Galatians 1:6-9) I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.”
“accursed” (αναìθεμα = doomed to destruction, given over to the
judgments of God, cast into Hell.)
2- God does not change, nor does his word.
(Hebrews 6:17-19) “Wherein God, willing more abundantly to shew unto the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed it by an oath: That by two immutable things, in which it was impossible for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us: Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and stedfast, and which entereth into that within the veil”
(Hebrews 6:17-19 MSG) “When God wanted to guarantee his promises, he gave his word, a rock-solid guarantee-- God can't break his word. And because his word cannot change, the promise is likewise unchangeable. We who have run for our very lives to God have every reason to grab the promised hope with both hands and never let go. It's an unbreakable spiritual lifeline, reaching past all appearances right to the very presence of God.”
(Hebrews 13:8) “Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.”
(Malachi 3:6) “For I am the LORD, I change not”
B- Be steadfast in love for Jesus.
1- Make Jesus the primary object of your love.
(Mark 12:30) “And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.”
· Jesus questioned Peter about his love.
(John 21:15-7) “So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs. “He saith to him again the second time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my sheep.” “He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep.”
· Jesus spoke to the Ephesians about their love.
(Revelation 2:2-4) “I know thy works, and thy labour, and thy patience, and how thou canst not bear them which are evil: and thou hast tried them which say they are apostles, and are not, and hast found them liars: And hast borne, and hast patience, and for my name's sake hast laboured, and hast not fainted. Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love.”
II- Be Unmovable (v. 58b)
A- Be unmovable in the face of opposition.
1- Opposition is guaranteed.
(2 Timothy 3:12)“Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.”
2- Remember you are in good company.
(Matthew 5:10-12) “Blessed are they which are persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.” .
B- Be unmovable in the face of adversity.
1- Don’t let your circumstances rob you of your commitment or joy.
(Philippians 4:11-13) “Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content. I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: every where and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.”
o Paul was not destroyed by adversity.
(2 Corinthians 11:24-26) “Of the Jews five times received I forty stripes save one. Thrice was I beaten with rods, once was I stoned, thrice I suffered shipwreck, a night and a day I have been in the deep; In journeyings often, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils by mine own countrymen, in perils by the heathen, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren; In weariness and painfulness, in watchings often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, in cold and nakedness. Beside those things that are without, that which cometh upon me daily, the care of all the churches.”
III- Be always about the Master’s work.
A- His work is all around you.
1- Winning Souls
(Acts 1:8) “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.”
(Proverbs 11:30) “The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life; and he that winneth souls is wise.”
2- Discipling New Believers
(Matthew 28:19-20) “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.”
3- Encouraging the Saints
(Ephesians 4:11-13) “And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ”
(1 Thessalonians 5:11) “Wherefore comfort yourselves together, and edify one another, even as also ye do.”
B- His work is never done in vain.
1. There is a reward for souls won.
(1 Thessalonians 2:19) “For what is our hope, or joy, or crown of rejoicing? Are not even ye in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ at his coming?”
