Welcome and Prayer

The Meaning of Maundy
Latin: mandatum novum - new commandment
John 13:34 “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.”
Singing hymns, word from Scripture, partaking of the Lord’s Supper
A lot of blood hymns - Can we make communion less bloody? No!
Covenant God,
we bless and thank you for the gift of the meal that Jesus commanded us to share. We thank you for this sign of your presence with us and your love for the world that Jesus came to redeem. We long to feast with Jesus in the fullness of the coming kingdom. May our worship today deepen our anticipation of that glory. Amen

Call To Worship

I will bless the LORD at all times;
His praise shall continually be in my mouth.
My soul makes its boast in the LORD;
let the humble hear and be glad.
O magnify the LORD with me,
and let us exalt His name together.
I sought the LORD, and He answered me,
and delivered me from all my fears.
Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good!
Blessed are those who take refuge in Him!
Oh, fear the LORD, you His saints,
for those who fear Him have no lack!

Message: The Future Feast

Jesus took time to be with His disciples
This was a busy time for Jesus
I’m sure He had much on His mind
He went to the garden to pray in agony
For this moment, He would be present
Even wash His disciples feet, servanthood
Jesus was anticipating a time yet to come
Matthew 26:29 “I tell you I will not drink again of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.”
There is a feast that is to come
Revelation 19:6–9 ESV
Then I heard what seemed to be the voice of a great multitude, like the roar of many waters and like the sound of mighty peals of thunder, crying out, “Hallelujah! For the Lord our God the Almighty reigns. Let us rejoice and exult and give him the glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and his Bride has made herself ready; it was granted her to clothe herself with fine linen, bright and pure”— for the fine linen is the righteous deeds of the saints. And the angel said to me, “Write this: Blessed are those who are invited to the marriage supper of the Lamb.” And he said to me, “These are the true words of God.”
This is not the last supper
He showed the disciples the path to get to the wedding feast
1 Corinthians 10:16–17 ESV
The cup of blessing that we bless, is it not a participation in the blood of Christ? The bread that we break, is it not a participation in the body of Christ? Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread.
1 Corinthians 11:23–26 ESV
For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when he was betrayed took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, “This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.
Sustain ourselves on His sacrifice
Put our hope on His blood shed for us

Communion

Invitation:
Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good!
Blessed are those who take refuge in Him!
Jesus said, “I am the bread of life;
whoever comes to me shall not hunger,
and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.”
Confession and Assurance:
The proof of God’s amazing love is this:
While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace,
that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
Trusting in God’s faithfulness and compassion,
let us confess our sin before God and one another.
Merciful God,
we confess that we have sinned against you
in thought, word, and deed,
by what we have done,
and by what we have left undone.
We have not loved you
with our whole heart and mind and strength.
We have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.
In your mercy forgive what we have been,
help us amend what we are,
and direct what we shall be,
so that we may delight in your will
and walk in your ways,
to the glory of your holy name.
Through Christ, our Lord. Amen.
Through the blood of Christ Jesus, our Lord,
we have redemption, forgiveness of sins.
The riches of God’s grace have been poured out upon us.
Praise be to our God,
who has chosen and made us his own.
Praise be to our God,
who forgives and cleanses us.
Praise be to our God,
who blesses us beyond our imagination!
Great Prayer of Thanksgiving :
The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Lift up your hearts.
We lift them up to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right for us to give thanks and praise.
It is truly right to glorify you, Father,
and to give you thanks,
for you alone are God, living and true,
dwelling in light inaccessible from before time and forever.
Fountain of all life and source of all goodness,
you made all things and fill them with your blessing;
you created them to rejoice in the splendor of your radiance.
Countless throngs of angels stand before you
to serve you night and day,
and, beholding the glory of your presence,
they offer you unceasing praise.
Joining with them,
and giving voice to every creature under heaven,
we glorify your name
and lift our voices in joyful praise:
Holy, holy, holy Lord,
God of power and might,
Heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.
We give thanks to God the Father
that our Savior, Jesus Christ, before He suffered,
gave us this memorial of His sacrifice,
until He comes again.
At His supper, the Lord Jesus took bread,
and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said,
“This is my body, which is for you;
do this in remembrance of me.”
In the same way,
He took the cup after supper and said,
“This cup is the new covenant sealed in my blood,
shed for you and for all for the forgiveness of sins.
Whenever you drink it,
do this in remembrance of me.”
For whenever we eat this bread and drink this cup,
we proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.
Therefore we proclaim our faith
as signed and sealed in this sacrament:
Christ has died,
Christ is risen,
Christ will come again.
Prayer for the Word of the Spirit:
God of all power, send your Holy Spirit upon us,
that in sharing the bread we may share in the body of Christ,
that in sharing the cup we may share in His blood.
Grant that, being joined together in Him,
we may attain to the unity of the faith
and grow up in all things into Christ, our Lord.
And as this grain has been gathered from many fields into one loaf,
and these grapes from many hills into one cup,
grant, O Lord, that your whole church
may soon be gathered from the ends of the earth
into your kingdom.
Through Him, with Him, in Him,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
all honor and glory are yours,
Almighty Father, now and forever. Amen.

Benediction

Hebrews 13:20–21 ESV
Now may the God of peace who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, equip you with everything good that you may do his will, working in us that which is pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen.
