CH. 9: CHRIST ENTERED HEAVEN W/ SACRIFICE....BETTER than TEMPLE/TABERNACLE

concludes....CHRIST’S SACRIFICE = ONE TIME…HE’LL RETURN to SAVE THOSE WAITING for HIM

CH 10 CONTINUES COMPARISON

So, we NEED this TEXT as it REMINDS us of the BETTER PROMISES we’ve INHERITED through the GOSPEL...

LAW (Ceremonial aspects) = SHADOW:

NEVER INTENDED to be PERMANENT.

SHADOW = REPRESENTATIVE…NEVER grows to be REAL THING!

LAW was FORESHADOWING GOOD THINGS to come WHICH CAME W/ CHRIST!! (We enjoy today)

PROBLEM: LAW COULDN’T MAKE anyone PERFECT.

SACRIFICES = CONTINUAL

***Day of Atonement:

high priest into holy of holies

ONCE a YEAR…YEARLY!!

***NOT EVEN HIGH PRIEST could ACHIEVE PERFECTION under OT!!

(V2) IF the OFFERINGS were SUFFICIENT, they WOULDN’T have CONTINUED...

they COULDN’T REMOVE CONSCIOUSNESS of SINS!

Transition: And we’ll see an EVEN FURTHER PART of the PROBLEM in verses 3 & 4,,

3 But in these sacrifices there is a reminder of sins every year. 4 For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins

OT SACRIFICES COULDN’T PERFECT PEOPLE …couldn’t cleanse conscience.

Adding INSULT to INJURY…they were a REMINDER of SIN!!

SPRINGTIME...GROWING GRASS…sign it needs to be MOWED AGAIN...

NO PERMANENCE…ALWAYS REMINDING & IN NEED!

Not only Day of Atonement…but REGULAR SIN OFFERINGS etc… it was MESSY…SMELLY...

&& CONTINUAL REMINDER of IMPERFECTION & SIN…PANGING CONSCIENCE!!

(V4) BULLS & GOATS COULDN’T TAKE SINS AWAY…ONLY COVER!!

So, this is the FOUNDATION of the NT... this is the WORLD that CHRIST CAME INTO.

A world set on IMPERFECT SACRIFICES and GUILTY CONSCIENCES....

JESUS ONLY PERFECTLY OBEYED!

Transition: So, I want you to look with me now at verses 10 through 14 to SEE the WONDERFUL RESULTS of CHRIST’S SACRIFICE for us...

10 And by that will [Christ’s obedience to God’s will, 9a] we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. 11 And every priest stands daily at his service, offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. 12 But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, 13 waiting from that time until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet. 14 For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.

By Christ’s sacrifice we HAVE BEEN SANCTIFIED:

Set apart

Made holy

CHRIST’S DEATH from 2,000 YEARS AGO still has CONTINUAL EFFECTS today!!

Ongoing forever…WE REAP the BENEFITS!…THE GOOD THINGS TO COME!!

***( PASSIVE THING) WE DON’T SAVE or SANCTIFY OURSELVES…NO WORKS…ALL of GRACE!

We CAN RECEIVE the GREATEST GIFT by FAITH!

PRIESTS would STAND & OFFER DAY BY DAY..... by day....none could take sins away

NO MATTER HOW UPRIGHT priest or person was…COULDN’T BE PERFECTED...

GOOD NEWS:: CHRIST OFFERED a ONCE FOR ALL SACRIFICE & TOOK A SEAT!!

WORK = COMPLETE.

IT IS FINISHED.

Now SEATED @ RIGHT HAND UNTIL ENEMIES be MADE a FOOTSTOOL (ESP. DEATH)!

WE LIVE DURING the “IN BETWEEN”....the TIME BETWEEN the RESURRECTION & 2ND COMING...

WAITING W/ CHRIST...

(v14) With ONE OFFERING he has PERFECTED FOR ALL TIME!

Again PAST THING, COMPLETED, w/ ONGOING EFFECTS...

our PERFECTION was ACCOMPLISHED @ CALVARY!

(v14b) THOSE WHO are BEING SANCTIFIED (us) = CONFUSING...

HAVE BEEN SANCTIFIED (v10) PERFECTED (v14)—Perfect tense.

Yet, still BEING (present tense) SANCTIFIED

PERFECTION = SEEN as CHRIST....RESULT of COMMUNION W/ GOD...

VEIL WAS TORN...

NONE HERE are “PERFECT”…no pastor…no elder, etc.

Yet WE’VE ALL RECEIVED “POSITIONAL RIGHTEOUSNESS”

God sees us righteous/perfect as Christ is!

HE MADE HIM SIN who KNEW NO SIN…so that WE could BECOME the RIGHTEOUSNESS of GOD.

And the SCRIPTURE here SAY that GOD has PERFECTED FOR ALL TIME, WITHOUT INTERRUPTION, CONTINUALLY, and ALWAYS (BDAG), THOSE who are BEING SANCTIFIED...

The BLOOD WILL NEVER LOSE IT’S POWER!!

SECURE BY BLOOD ALONE!

CONTINUAL WORK in our lives.... “BEING SANCTIFIED”

POSITIONALLY RIGHTEOUS becoming OUTWARDLY RIGHTEOUS, BY HOLY SPIRIT. (still Passive)....

PERFECT in CHRIST…YET IMPERFECT & fall short...

Opportunity & PRIVILEGE to GROW in GODLINESS BEFORE WATCHING WORLD!

WE were SET APART by GOD, CONSECRATED, and MADE HOLY, and yet there’s STILL A WORK to be DONE.

For God desires to see us GROW into the IMAGE of J.C. day by day.

SACRIFICES AREN’T DONE DAILY…but we CAN GROW DAILY...

FREE GRACE TAKES AWAY ALL SINS… (past, present, future)…ISN’T a LICENSE to SIN...

We’re tasked to grow:

Some scholars refer to this as, “Becoming what you already are.”

Reflecting Christ to a watching world!

Gospel:

IF you still FEEL PANG FROM SINS in your PAST…IF YOU’RE UNSAVED......

CHRIST DIED FOR SINNERS like YOU & LIKE ME...

He died so WE COULD BE FREED from PENALTY of SIN…ETERNAL SEPARATION from GOD in HELL...

You can be saved by grace through faith today!

For THOSE IN CHRIST…encourage, PAST SINS are DONE & GONE…NO REMEMBRANCE/GUILT FOR SINS UNDER BLOOD

IN CHRIST = NEW CREATION...

CONFESS SIN & FORGET...

Under the OT there was a CONTINUAL REMINDER of SIN through CONTINUAL SACRIFICE...

but JESUS DIED FOR your SINS ONCE and FOR ALL, so you don’t have to remember them either.

Bible Scholar (Hughes) “The gospel turns a remembrance of guilt into a remembrance of grace.”

Main Idea:

SHOULDN’T CONTINUE TO FEEL SHAME & GUILT…IF in CHRIST…SINS ARE GONE!

The Good News is that we can have a clean conscience before God, through the work of Jesus Christ, today.
