God’s only Son

Good Friday 2023
Today we celebrating Good Friday
The day our Lord and savior Jesus Christ, Took our place at the cross, suffer our punishment and died our death. Jesus died as an atoning sacrifice for our sin and to defeat the spiritual forces against us.
It is good Friday, because, Sunday was coming, and Jesus rose from the dead, fulfilling every promise He made. He conquered death, defeated the spiritual forces of evil and took them captive, He ascended to Heaven to the throne of God, where he now rules.
Isaiah 53 was fulfilled
Isa 53:3 He was despised and rejected by mankind, a man of suffering, and familiar with pain. Like one from whom people hide their faces he was despised, and we held him in low esteem.
Isa 53:4 Surely he took up our pain and bore our suffering, yet we considered him punished by God, stricken by him, and afflicted.
Isa 53:5 But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed.
Isa 53:6 We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all.
Isa 53:7 He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before its shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth.
Isa 53:8 By oppression and judgment he was taken away. Yet who of his generation protested? For he was cut off from the land of the living; for the transgression of my people he was punished.
I would like to continue with our series “The Living Word” from the book of john the 4th gospel.
Let’s pray
on chapter On chapter 18 John
Jesus was betrayed, arrested and brought before Pilate.
Jesus God’s only son

1 Jesus before Pilate

Joh 19:1 Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged.
Scourge
The gruesome images you saw in the movie “ the passion of the Christ”
By Mel Gibson, Gives us a more realistic view of the punishment Jesus endured.
They had 3 different levels
1Fustegatio rough them up before
2 Flagelatio severe beating
3 verberatio reserve for capital crimes, the intent was to weaken the criminals so they would not last long, some would die before their crucifixion
Eusebius the bishop of Caesarea, wrote “The veins were laid bare, and the very muscles, sinews, and bowels of the victim were open to exposure.”
No mercy. Actually they were suppose to give 40 lashes, but they would take one away as an act of mercy 39
Joh 19:2 The soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head. They clothed him in a purple robe
Joh 19:3 and went up to him again and again, saying, "Hail, king of the Jews!" And they slapped him in the face.
This was just a game the soldiers would play, hot hand they would blind fold the victim, and hit them and ask them to tell them who hit you.
Joh 19:4 Once more Pilate came out and said to the Jews gathered there, "Look, I am bringing him out to you to let you know that I find no basis for a charge against him."
Pilate being a governor and a judge needed to know the crime
He is not guilty
Joh 19:5 When Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe, Pilate said to them, "Here is the man!"
Behold the man, have pit on him.
Joh 19:6 As soon as the chief priests and their officials saw him, they shouted, "Crucify! Crucify!" But Pilate answered, "You take him and crucify him. As for me, I find no basis for a charge against him."
3 time Pilate declares Jesus not guilty
Joh 19:7 The Jewish leaders insisted, "We have a law, and according to that law he must die, because he claimed to be the Son of God."
The son of God is God, the same DNA, and they understood that.
Joh 19:8 When Pilate heard this, he was even more afraid,
Pilate was a Roman soldier. He is what ? he had a roman world view, this man is what? and I just had him beaten scourged, he could come back after me.
In the gospel of Mark he says that Pilate marveled at Jesus he was astonished he use the word in Greek thaumazo.(thau-mad-zo) Admiration , marveled, wonder
Mar 15:5 But Jesus made no further answer at all, so that Pilate was astonished.
Remember his wife had a dream
Mat 27:19 While Pilate was sitting on the judge's seat, his wife sent him this message: "Don't have anything to do with that innocent man, for I have suffered a great deal today in a dream because of him."
Pilate was afraid
Joh 19:9 and he went back inside the palace. "Where do you come from?" he asked Jesus, but Jesus gave him no answer.
Joh 19:10 "Do you refuse to speak to me?" Pilate said. "Don't you realize I have power either to free you or to crucify you?"
Leaders good or bad are put in place by God, Jesus recognize that, Paul in Romans 13 explains it.
Joh 19:11 Jesus answered, "You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above. Therefore the one who handed me over to you is guilty of a greater sin."
Joh 19:12 From then on, Pilate tried to set Jesus free, but the Jewish leaders kept shouting, "If you let this man go, you are no friend of Caesar. Anyone who claims to be a king opposes Caesar."
They hated Caesar and the Romans but now they worship Caesar
Joh 19:13 When Pilate heard this, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the judge's seat at a place known as the Stone Pavement (which in Aramaic is Gabbatha).
Joh 19:14 It was the day of Preparation of the Passover; it was about noon. "Here is your king," Pilate said to the Jews.
Jesus was crucified at the same time the lambs were being sacrificed
Joh 19:15 But they shouted, "Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!" "Shall I crucify your king?" Pilate asked. "We have no king but Caesar," the chief priests answered.

2 The crucifixion

The Crucifixion
Joh 19:16 Finally Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified. So the soldiers took charge of Jesus.
Joh 19:17 Carrying his own cross, he went out to the place of the Skull (which in Aramaic is called Golgotha).
Jesus didn’t make all the way Simon of Cyrene carried for Him part of the way.
On the same mount Isaac was almost sacrificed, the early church leaders notice that parallel, Jesus was sacrificed on mount Moriah. The mount God asked Abraham to sacrifice his only son Isaac
Gen 22:2 Then God said, "Take your son, your only son, whom you love—Isaac—and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on a mountain I will show you."
The early church leaders notice this parallel with Isaac, Abraham only son, even though he had two sons Isaac was the son of the promise. Ishmael was not from Sarah. The Lord provided a sacrifice.
Joh 19:18 There they crucified him, and with him two others—one on each side and Jesus in the middle.
Joh 19:19 Pilate had a notice prepared and fastened to the cross. It read: JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS.
Joh 19:20 Many of the Jews read this sign, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and the sign was written in Aramaic, Latin and Greek.
Joh 19:21 The chief priests of the Jews protested to Pilate, "Do not write 'The King of the Jews,' but that this man claimed to be king of the Jews."
Joh 19:22 Pilate answered, "What I have written, I have written."
Joh 19:23 When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his clothes, dividing them into four shares, one for each of them, with the undergarment remaining. This garment was seamless, woven in one piece from top to bottom.
Persians invented the crucifixion Romans perfected.
Joh 19:24 "Let's not tear it," they said to one another. "Let's decide by lot who will get it." This happened that the scripture might be fulfilled that said, "They divided my clothes among them and cast lots for my garment." So this is what the soldiers did.
Joh 19:25 Near the cross of Jesus stood his mother, his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.
Thousands followed Jesus when he fed them when he heal them, now at the cross just a few where there
Jesus had 12 disciples , 3 were closer to him Peter, James and John, and john it was the most intimate one.
But at the cross only 1 of the guys
4 of them were women 1 guy
Traditionally women responds more to the things of God than men
Joh 19:26 When Jesus saw his mother there, and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to her, "Woman, here is your son,"
Joh 19:27 and to the disciple, "Here is your mother." From that time on, this disciple took her into his home.
John wants us to know what a privilege was for him to be there at the foot of the cross with Jesus.

3 His Death

The Death of Jesus
Joh 19:28 Later, knowing that everything had now been finished, and so that Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, "I am thirsty."
Joh 19:29 A jar of wine vinegar was there, so they soaked a sponge in it, put the sponge on a stalk of the hyssop plant, and lifted it to Jesus' lips.
Joh 19:30 When he had received the drink, Jesus said, "It is finished." With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
Jesus sacrifice was for me and you,
Thank Him today
Make Jesus the Lord of your life.
Joh 3:16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
To receive Jesus, we need to accept Him as God’s son, repent from our sins and a life of selfishness, we need to ask Him to be our Lord and savior, not that you deserve it, but is a gift from God.
If this is your desire today, please repeat this prayer after me?
Heavenly Father I’m sinner,
I’m sorry for my sins,
I’m willing to turn away from my sins.
I receive Christ as my savior,
I confess him as Lord
from this moment on I want to follow and serve him,
in the fellowship of his church,
In Jesus name. Amen!
1Co 11:23 For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you: that the Lord Jesus on the same night in which He was betrayed took bread;
1Co 11:24 and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, "Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me."
1Co 11:25 In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me."
1Co 11:26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death till He comes.
1Co 11:27 Therefore whoever eats this bread or drinks this cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord.
