Put on the New Man

Ephesians 4:24 KJV 1900
24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.
The new man is created in righteousness and true holiness
Colossians 3:10 KJV 1900
10 And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:
The new man is renewed in knowledge (after the image of him that created him)
Orating from his park “soapbox,” a Communist pointed to an ill-clad man and said,
“Communism will put a new suit on that man.”
Someone in the crowd replied,
“Christ will put a new man in that suit.”

The New Person Is Created.

(bārāʾ). vb. to create. Used only of God creating, never of humans making things.

This verb is used only of creative acts performed by God.

creating is never spoken of in Scripture except to describe great works.
The world is created.
A house is more commonly said to be built.
Note that it is a great work of God when it says “the new person is created by God in Christ.”
This creature towers over the other creatures.
This creature alone is said to have been established in the same way as the world was established, from “the beginning of God’s ways,” when all the elements first came into being. Ephesians 4:24 created in righteousness
Proverbs 8:22 wisdom

Is it old Self vs new Self?

Is the Believer Both an “Old Self” and a “New Self”?
What is the relationship between our so-called old self and our new self (or old person and new person).
These expressions are found only the writings of Paul.
The term old self is found in Romans 6:6, Colossians 3:9, Ephesians 4:22-30.
The term new self is found in Colossians 3:10 (where the Greek word neos is used for “new”) and in Ephesians 4:24 (where the Greek word kainos is used for “new”).
In these passages Paul contrasts the old self associated with the life of sin with the new self that we have put on, now that we are in Christ.

Most Theologians

Say the old self and the new self are distinguishable aspects of the believer.
Before conversion believers had an old self;
at the time of conversion, however, they put on the new self—but without totally losing the old self.
The Christian, in this view, is understood to be partly a new self and partly an old self—something like a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.
At times the old self is in control, but at other times the new self is in the saddle;
The struggle of life, according to this view, is the struggle between these two aspects of the believer’s being
In Greek the expression is palaios anthrōpos, rendered “old man” in the KJV and the ASV, but in newer versions often as “old nature” (RSV, NEB) or “old self” (RSV, JB, NASB, NIV).
Since the word anthrōpos means “human being” and not “male human being,” the rendering “old self” is to be preferred to “old man.”
Here again, whereas the older versions (KJV, ASV) have “new man,” the newer versions have “new nature” (RSV, NEB) or “new self” (JB, NASB, NIV).
Ephesians 4:20–24 KJV 1900
20 But ye have not so learned Christ; 21 If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus: 22 That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; 23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; 24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.
The Greek text of verses 22–24 uses three different Greek words to describe three main actions
apothesthai - “to put off,”
ananeousthai - “to be made new,”
endysasthai - “to put on,”
When reviewed verse by verse, these may be taken as three “imperatives”
It then seems that Paul is telling the believers in Ephesus what they should now do
1. put off …
2. be renewed …
3. put on ...
Yet, in the fullness of Paul's writing, we find that believers are
1. Free from the power of sin - Romans 6:6 our old man is crucified, dead to sin, no longer under the power of sin
Romans 6:6 KJV 1900
6 Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin.
We do also know, that as long as we are in these mortal bodies, we are subject to the voice of our bodies needs.
2. Renewed in their mind Colossians 1:9
Colossians 1:9 KJV 1900
9 For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding;
This knowledge of his will and spiritual understanding brings us to to a place where we are Colossians 1:10-11 “being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God; Strengthened with all might, according to his glorious power, unto all patience and longsuffering with joyfulness;”
3. A new creation - a heart of flesh for a heart of stone - we call it being born again as Jesus said in John 3:3
John 3:3 KJV 1900
3 Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
No, it isn’t Old Self vs New self.
It is natural man, carnal man that was cut off from God, that was lost and without hope vs the spiritual man that is created in the image of Jesus Christ.

The Old Man

Mortify (condemn) these things

Paul identifies five characteristics of the old man that we are to condemn (mortify) in Colossians 3:5-7
Colossians 3:5–7 KJV 1900
5 Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry: 6 For which things’ sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience: 7 In the which ye also walked some time, when ye lived in them.
These are described in verse 5
A. “Fornication” - The practice of engaging in immoral sexual activity, but especially that which is outside the bounds of a marriage covenant (between a man and a woman).
B. “Uncleanness” - A woman in her period is unclean, A man with an issue of semen is unclean.
C. “Inordinate affection” - evil craving — an inordinate, self-indulgent craving (that displaces proper affections for God)
D. “Evil concupiscence” - intense desire, always in a bad sense (so that ‘evil c.’ of Col 3:5 is a redundancy in English), and nearly always meaning sexual lust.
E. “Covetousness” - The desire to have something for oneself, a craving or passionate desire. Dishonest gain Habakkuk 2:9 - trusting in money rather than God. Inordinate desire to have more.
Habakkuk 2:9 KJV 1900
9 Woe to him that coveteth an evil covetousness to his house, That he may set his nest on high, that he may be delivered from the power of evil!

Covetousness is pictured as a grave sin that leads to a variety of other sins. The love of money is “the root of all evils” (1 Tim 6:9, 10; cf. Prv 15:27). It was the sin of Ananias and Sapphira (Acts 5:2, 3; cf. 1 Sm 15:9, 19; Mt 26:14, 15; 2 Pt 2:15; Jude 11). Jesus warned: “Take heed, and beware of all covetousness; for a man’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions” (Lk 12:15).

A. These are the things which bring the wrath of God on the “sons of disobedience.”
B. These are the things which characterize and belong to the unconverted life.

Six Things to “Put Off”

Put off - stop doing these things
Colossians 3:8–11 KJV 1900
8 But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth. 9 Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds; 10 And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him: 11 Where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, Barbarian, Scythian, bond nor free: but Christ is all, and in all.
A. “Anger” - A strong feeling of displeasure aroused by a wrong, whether real or perceived.
B. “Wrath” - A strong emotion of hostility with a punitive and vindicatory reaction
C. “Malice” - a character trait that feels a need to see others suffer
D. “Blasphemy” - To slander a deity or something sacred, expressing disrespect for God or for something sacred
E. “Filthy Communication” - lewd or obscene talk. disgustingly dirty; filled or smeared with offensive matter.
F. “Lying” - Intentionally deceiving through either telling a lie or omission. To say something with the intent to deceive. The deliberate act of deviating from the truth.

Expressions of hate to put away.

1. “Bitterness”
2. “Wrath”
3. “Anger”
4. “Clamour”
5. “Evil speaking”
6. “Malice”

The New Man

A new creature (creation) - born again
We are not, as has often been taught, both old selves and new selves.
We are new in Christ. Paul highlights this important point in 2 Corinthians 5:17
2 Corinthians 5:17 KJV 1900
17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
The old man is the unregenerate man; separated from God, living only a carnal and natural life.
The new man is the regenerate man created in Christ Jesus unto good works - “Our old man has been crucified.”
Though believers are new persons, however, they have not yet attained sinless perfection; they still struggle against sin.
Colossians 3:10 KJV 1900
10 And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:
This new self that believers put on is described as a self that is being renewed; this renewal is a lifelong process.
In Ephesians 4:23
Ephesians 4:23 KJV 1900
23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;
Paul reminds us that, although we have put off the old self and put on the new, we are still being made new in the attitude of our minds.
The infinitive ananeousthai, rendered “made new,” is in the present tense, suggesting a continuing process.
Believers who have become new creatures in Christ are still told to put to death the misdeeds of the body Romans 8:13
Romans 8:13 KJV 1900
13 For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live.
To kill whatever is sinful in us Col 3:5
Colossians 3:5 KJV 1900
5 Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:
To rid ourselves of such sins as lust, greed, rage, malice, and filthy language (vv. 5, 8), and to purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit 2 Cor 7:1
2 Corinthians 7:1 KJV 1900
1 Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.
This New Man is a new creation.
The creation stories of Genesis give the most information about God and creation. God creates through commands: “Let there be.”
These Creative Miracles happen as God speaks and says “Let there be” … This New man is a new creature, something that never existed before.

The Obligations of the Risen Life

There is something God expects from us in Col 3:1-4
Colossians 3:1–4 KJV 1900
1 If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. 2 Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. 3 For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God. 4 When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.

Our Obligations are Based on Access with Authority

A. We are risen with Christ.
B. We are seated with Christ.

Our Obligation is to

Colossians 3:1–2 KJV 1900

A. We are “dead” with Christ.
B. We are “hid with Christ.”
C. We are to appear with Christ “in glory.”

Eight Things to “Put On”

Col 3:12-14
Colossians 3:12–14 KJV 1900
12 Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; 13 Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. 14 And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness.
But this is not for everyone. This is for
A. “The elect of God.”
B. “Holy.”
C. “Beloved.”

What we are to put on is

A. “Bowels of mercies”
B. “Kindness”
C. “Humbleness of mind”
D. “Meekness”
E. “Longsuffering”
F. “Forbearing one another.
G. “Forgiving one another”
H. “Charity”

Our New Way of Life

Eph 4:17-32
Ephesians 4:17–32 KJV 1900
17 This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind, 18 Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart: 19 Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness. 25 Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another. 26 Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath: 27 Neither give place to the devil. 28 Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth. 29 Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers. 30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. 31 Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: 32 And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.
If we have been saved, there is evident change in the way we live. Our conduct will be different.
We will have a relationship with the Holy Spirit.
A. Stop grieving Him or causing Him pain or distress! Because:
1. He is the Holy Spirit.
2. He is the “holy Spirit of God.
3. He has sealed or stamped us as God’s own.
4. He has sealed us “unto the day of redemption.”
B. Manifestations of love (v. 32).
1. “Kind.”
2. “Tenderhearted.”
3. “Forgiving.”

We are to be filled with the Holy Spirit

Ephesians 5:18–21 KJV 1900
18 And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit; 19 Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; 20 Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ; 21 Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.
We give up some things like drunkenness.
We gain being “filled with the Spirit.”
A. Four results of being filled:
1. Joyfulness.
2. Full of praise.
3. Thankfulness.
4. Submissiveness.
I make all things new (Rev. 21:5);
I am doing a new thing (Isa. 43:19);
The Lord has created a new thing on the earth (Jer. 31:22);
I declare new things (Isa. 42:9; Isa. 48:6);
old things have passed away, the new has come (2 Cor. 5:17).

if the Lord creates something new and the earth swallows them (Num. 16:30);
the Athenians spent their time in nothing other than telling or hearing something new (Acts 17:21);
we enter by a new and living way (Heb. 10:20);
a householder with old and new in his treasure (Matt. 13:52).

If anyone is in Christ he is a new creation (2 Cor. 5:17);
a new creation (Gal. 6:15);
the new man (Eph. 4:24);
you have put on the new man (Col. 3:10);
one new man in place of the two (Eph. 2:15);
walk in newness of life (Rom. 6:4);
serve in the new life of the Spirit (Rom. 7:6);
the Lord’s mercies are new every morning (Lam. 3:23);
