Introduction

In I Love You But I Don’t Trust You by Mira Kirshenbaum
We don’t trust because:
People are imperfect
People disappoint us
People hurt us
We hurt people ourselves
The more you love someone, the easier it is to get hurt
But after going through the pain and reconciliation do I trust now: I trust him with my life
I can sleep at night
and during the day I am at peace
Whom do you identify with loved?
Hurt, scared, confused
Wavering and confused
What do we do once filled with suspicion and doubt: scold, leave.
Try to ignore the problem. Yell and scream.
Most people living in this state report experiencing pain and confusion. Our world has become a nightmare. We do not know what to do or where to turn. The person we perhaps care about the most has become our biggest threat!
Trust is the lifeblood which keeps a relationship healthy

Transition to Body

Luke 23:46 ESV
46 Then Jesus, calling out with a loud voice, said, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit!” And having said this he breathed his last.
Calling out- of humans call/cry out, speak loudly, say with emphasis
Jesus decides to cry out in a manner to make a point of emphasis

Body

Luke 23:46 ESV
46 Then Jesus, calling out with a loud voice, said, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit!” And having said this he breathed his last.

Father’s Caring Responsibility

Father- pater- the supreme deity, who is responsible for the origin and care of all that exists, Father, Parent

Genesis chapter 3 in the fall of man

Genesis 3:9–10 ESV
9 But the Lord God called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?” 10 And he said, “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself.”
Genesis 3:13 ESV
13 Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this that you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”
Genesis 3:21 ESV
21 And the Lord God made for Adam and for his wife garments of skins and clothed them.

Genesis chapter 4

Genesis 4:13–15 ESV
13 Cain said to the Lord, “My punishment is greater than I can bear. 14 Behold, you have driven me today away from the ground, and from your face I shall be hidden. I shall be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will kill me.” 15 Then the Lord said to him, “Not so! If anyone kills Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold.” And the Lord put a mark on Cain, lest any who found him should attack him.

Exodus

Exodus 2:23–24 ESV
23 During those many days the king of Egypt died, and the people of Israel groaned because of their slavery and cried out for help. Their cry for rescue from slavery came up to God. 24 And God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob.

God prepares a body

Hebrews 10:5 ESV
5 Consequently, when Christ came into the world, he said, “Sacrifices and offerings you have not desired, but a body have you prepared for me;

Father’s helping power

Luke 23:46 ESV
46 Then Jesus, calling out with a loud voice, said, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit!” And having said this he breathed his last.
Hands- The hand of deity means divine power as ruler, helper, worker of wonders, regulator of the universe
Wonderworking hands of God

God of the impossible

Genesis 18:10–14 ESV
10 The Lord said, “I will surely return to you about this time next year, and Sarah your wife shall have a son.” And Sarah was listening at the tent door behind him. 11 Now Abraham and Sarah were old, advanced in years. The way of women had ceased to be with Sarah. 12 So Sarah laughed to herself, saying, “After I am worn out, and my lord is old, shall I have pleasure?” 13 The Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh and say, ‘Shall I indeed bear a child, now that I am old?’ 14 Is anything too hard for the Lord? At the appointed time I will return to you, about this time next year, and Sarah shall have a son.”

God who does more abundantly

Ephesians 3:16–17 ESV
16 that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, 17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love,
Ephesians 3:20–21 ESV
20 Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, 21 to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.

Father’s Entrusted Protection

Luke 23:46 ESV
46 Then Jesus, calling out with a loud voice, said, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit!” And having said this he breathed his last.
Commit- to entrust for safekeeping, give over, entrust, commend,
entrust someone to the care or protection of someone

Jesus Entrusts His Spirit to the Father

Spirit- that which animates or gives life to the body, breath, (life-)spirit

And having said this he breathed his last.

Luke 23:46 ESV
46 Then Jesus, calling out with a loud voice, said, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit!” And having said this he breathed his last.
breathe out one’s life/soul, expire,
Jesus had to expire
Only once!

Another breathing out Jesus did

For Jesus to breath out on you
Another time when Jesus breathed:
John 20:22–23 ESV
22 And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you withhold forgiveness from any, it is withheld.”
(unless αὐτοῖς also belongs to ἐνεφύσ‌.), for the purpose of transmitting the Holy Spirit J 20:22 (cp.

Transition To Close- Jesus in fact quoting

Psalm 31:1–5 ESV
1 In you, O Lord, do I take refuge; let me never be put to shame; in your righteousness deliver me! 2 Incline your ear to me; rescue me speedily! Be a rock of refuge for me, a strong fortress to save me! 3 For you are my rock and my fortress; and for your name’s sake you lead me and guide me; 4 you take me out of the net they have hidden for me, for you are my refuge. 5 Into your hand I commit my spirit; you have redeemed me, O Lord, faithful God.

So I do not fear those who kill the body:

Matthew 10:28 ESV
28 And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell.

Close- Into the Father’s Hands

David realized

2 Samuel 24:14 ESV
14 Then David said to Gad, “I am in great distress. Let us fall into the hand of the Lord, for his mercy is great; but let me not fall into the hand of man.”

Stephen knew

Acts 7:58–60 ESV
58 Then they cast him out of the city and stoned him. And the witnesses laid down their garments at the feet of a young man named Saul. 59 And as they were stoning Stephen, he called out, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.” 60 And falling to his knees he cried out with a loud voice, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.” And when he had said this, he fell asleep.

Peter wrote:

1 Peter 5:6–11 ESV
6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, 7 casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you. 8 Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. 9 Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world. 10 And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. 11 To him be the dominion forever and ever. Amen.
John 10:18 ESV
18 No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down, and I have authority to take it up again. This charge I have received from my Father.”

The reality of being in the fathers hand- No one is able to snatch sheep out of the fathers hand:

John 10:28–29 ESV
28 I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand.
God the Father is the one who:
Zechariah 12:1 ESV
1 The oracle of the word of the Lord concerning Israel: Thus declares the Lord, who stretched out the heavens and founded the earth and formed the spirit of man within him:
Job 32:7–8 ESV
7 I said, ‘Let days speak, and many years teach wisdom.’ 8 But it is the spirit in man, the breath of the Almighty, that makes him understand.
