Intro:

Alternator on the car
Just as I got to Jordan I received a text from my wife
It was a picture of a warning light on her car
It said “service battery charging system”
I looked it up and it meant that either the battery or alternator was going out
Two days later I got a text that the car had stopped working as she was driving on the 101
She had enough power to cruise the shoulder, but it was dead
I called our insurance and had it towed to the dealership
The guy told me it needed both a battery and alternator to the tune of $1400
It worked fine until Jen drove down to SB to pick me up
The same light came on and it started making a loud whirring noise
Took it back to the dealership and found out the new alternator failed
Nothing today lasts as long as the refrigerator you bought in the 1970’s
You go to your grandparents house and they still have the same mustard refrigerator they bought with the house
We are used to things failing us
That can translate to how we view our lives
We have failed so many times God can’t love or use us
Often we assume that God is unable to work in spite of our weakness, mistakes, and sins. We forget that God is a specialist; he is well able to work our failures into his plans.
Erwin W. Lutzer
This morning I want to show you how God’s love will never fail you

Read Romans 5:6-8

Transition
Retell resurrection story
Today is resurrection Sunday
It is the day we celebrate Jesus’ resurrection from the dead
He laid in the grave for three days and on the morning of the third day the stone was rolled back and he walked out
His resurrection shows us that he had victory over death
Death couldn’t hold its grip on him and he walked out of that tomb
Everything that Satan and man threw at him didn’t stick
What emerged is a love that will never fail those who put their trust in Jesus

1. God Showed His Love vs. 6-8

W/O strength

The greatest manifestation of God’s love in all of history is that while we were weak, Christ died for us
We are utterly helpless to bring ourselves to God
We are incapable of climbing out of our sin
We need a savior
God sent his only son to die for us
John 3:16 ESV
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
We are unworthy of His love and powerless to resist Satan
Human love is based on attractiveness of the object of love, and we are inclined to love those who love us
It is easy to attribute that kind of love to God
We think his love is dependent on how good we are or how much we love him
If God loved us because we loved him, he would love us only so long as we love him
On that condition, our salvation would depend on the consistency of our hearts

While still sinners

We know that God’s love will never fail us because He loved us while were still sinners
God’s love is supremely demonstrated by Christ dying for undeserving, unlovable man
The God who hates every sinful thought and deed nevertheless loves the sinners who think and do those things
Love does not look at itself—it is absorbed in the object of its love.
Love manifests itself by loving persons in the concrete.
The Love of God, 77
David Martyn Lloyd-Jones
That love is a free gift

2. Saves us from Wrath vs. 9-10

God shows us His love never fails because he saves us from wrath
Believers in Jesus Christ are certain in their deliverance

Given Justice

We have been justified by the blood of Jesus Christ
We are guilty sinners, not deserving of justice or mercy but God freely gives it to us because of His Son’s blood
In light of this justice being extended, we are saved from the wrath of God
1 Thessalonians 5:9 ESV
For God has not destined us for wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ,
See those words “much more shall?”
This indicates that what follows is even more overwhelming and significant than what has preceded
Being justified refers to the initial aspect of salvation
Because justice has been extended we are assured of being saved from the wrath

Right Relationship w/ God

vs. 10 While we were enemies we were reconciled
If God showed such dramatic love to us when we were enemies, think of the blessings we will enjoy once we are reconciled to God!
If God does this much for His enemies, how much more will He do for His friends!
The benefits of God’s love affects us as much right now as they do when we are in heaven

3. Rejoice in Reconciliation vs. 11

God shows us His love never fails because he has reconciled us to Him
Our sin broke our relationship with God
God sent his son to make it right
The word atonement means “reconciliation, brought back into fellowship with God.”
Ephesians 2:11–12 ESV
Therefore remember that at one time you Gentiles in the flesh, called “the uncircumcision” by what is called the circumcision, which is made in the flesh by hands— remember that you were at that time separated from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers to the covenants of promise, having no hope and without God in the world.
Rejoicing means to boast
We boast in what God has done
We should be the most positive people in the world. We cannot drag our way through life, moaning and groaning. No, “we exult in God.” Then every part of our life becomes suffused with glory. Christian worship becomes a joyful celebration of God and Christian living a joyful service of God
