Why The Resurrection?

29 Otherwise, what do people mean by being baptized on behalf of the dead? If the dead are not raised at all, why are people baptized on their behalf?

mormons’ proxy baptism- no. Not in the new testament. salvation is a personal choice, and nobody needs to be baptized to be saved.

If there is no resurrection, why bother winning others to Christ? why ask others and tell others about Jesus? If this life is only a dead end one way street, why drive it?

But the resurrection is true.

Jesus talked about the straight and narrow way that leads to life, and the broad crooked way that leads to death and destruction.

28 Do not marvel at this, for an hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice 29 and come out, those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.

Why the Resurrection?

30 Why are we in danger every hour? 31 I protest, brothers, by my pride in you, which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord, I die every day! 32 What do I gain if, humanly speaking, I fought with beasts at Ephesus? If the dead are not raised, “Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die.”

Paul was constantly in danger.

W/hy endure suffering and danger if death ends it all? he quoted Isaiah 22.13

13 and behold, joy and gladness, killing oxen and slaughtering sheep, eating flesh and drinking wine. “Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die.”

Listen, your life will be reviewed. It is called the judgment seat of Christ- don’t believe it isn’t so. See 2 Cor 5.10

10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may receive what is due for what he has done in the body, whether good or evil.

We are made up of body, souls, and spirits. All will participate in the resurrection- but the body is what we are talking about in resurrection.

18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us. 19 For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God. 20 For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope 21 that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. 22 For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. 23 And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies.

1 Corinthians 15:33–34 ESV

33 Do not be deceived: “Bad company ruins good morals.” 34 Wake up from your drunken stupor, as is right, and do not go on sinning. For some have no knowledge of God. I say this to your shame.

If resurrection is a lie, then what we do with our bodies doesn’t matter- the future actually doesn’t matter.

I want you to imagine how immoral Corinth was. False gods, adultery, temple of prostitution, etc., Sound familiar?

Can you imagine the people of Corinth rejection the resurrection in order to rationalize their own sin? Paul wrote the following in 1 Thess 5.4-11;;

4 But you are not in darkness, brothers, for that day to surprise you like a thief. 5 For you are all children of light, children of the day. We are not of the night or of the darkness. 6 So then let us not sleep, as others do, but let us keep awake and be sober. 7 For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, are drunk at night. 8 But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, having put on the breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet the hope of salvation. 9 For God has not destined us for wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, 10 who died for us so that whether we are awake or asleep we might live with him. 11 Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.

49 Just as we have borne the image of the man of dust, we shall also bear the image of the man of heaven. 50 I tell you this, brothers: flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable. 51 Behold! I tell you a mystery. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, 52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed. 53 For this perishable body must put on the imperishable, and this mortal body must put on immortality. 54 When the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written: “Death is swallowed up in victory.” 55 “O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?” 56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

John told us about a transformation in 1 John 3.1-3

1 See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him. 2 Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is. 3 And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure.

Jesus said this in John 14.19

Why The Resurrection?

The answer is my bottom line:

Easter Sunday Makes My Life Matter

Solomon said 38 times, “All is Vanity’. Nothing really matters. Life is just a breath and it’s over. He tried everything, pleasure, money, philosophy- again and again he discovered that external physical pursuits could never fulfill internal hunger of the human heart and soul. The resurrection does.

The final verse of 1 Corinthians 15, verse 58, is a hymn of praise to the Lord. Listen to 1 Corinthians 15.58

58 Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.
