13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him. 14 John would have prevented him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” 15 But Jesus answered him, “Let it be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he consented. 16 And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him; 17 and behold, a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”

The Imminence of the Resurrection
The Imminence of the Resurrection
While Jesus is still in the river, water flowing around Him.
16 And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him;
Matt 3:16 “16 And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him;”
Jesus did not delay His own resurrection.
Not after millennia. Not for the ascension. He died on Friday, there was a period of rest on the Sabbath, and on the first day of the week He rose again.
At death, we are instantaneously experiencing eternity.
You’ve heard it said, “to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.” Scriptures says it this way in 2 Cor 5:8 “… we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord.”
The full passage is important for us to reflect on today:
6 So we are always of good courage. We know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord, 7 for we walk by faith, not by sight. 8 Yes, we are of good courage, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord. 9 So whether we are at home or away, we make it our aim to please him.
Our courage and our hope are in eternal life
Resurrection demonstrated by Jesus
Life everlasting foreshadowed in the Garden
A comparison that counts all we have on this earth as loss (rubbish, refuse, garbage)
Our confirmation is in our faith, not our sight
Faith is not believing without evidence, faith is believing so strongly you cannot help but act on it.
Our faith is confirmed by the Spirit
Our hosting of the inaugural FirstLove conference dealt with the subject of the new birth. Next year, Lord willing, we will examine the Holy Spirit. The Spirit is:
A seal (Eph 1:13 “13 In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit,” & Ro 8:9 “9 You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him.”)
A Helper/guide (Jn 16:7 “7 Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.”)
The Unveiling of the Resurrection
The Unveiling of the Resurrection
16 And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him;
Matt 3:16 “16 And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him;”
The resurrection is not a new idea:
Ps 71:20 “20 You who have made me see many troubles and calamities will revive me again; from the depths of the earth you will bring me up again.”
Is 26:19 “19 Your dead shall live; their bodies shall rise. You who dwell in the dust, awake and sing for joy! For your dew is a dew of light, and the earth will give birth to the dead.”
Dan 12:2 “2 And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.”
Abraham & Isaac.
5 Then Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey; I and the boy will go over there and worship and come again to you.”
Finally, in the baptism of Jesus we not only see the imminence and unveiling of the resurrection…
The Seal of the Resurrection
The Seal of the Resurrection
Here we see that the resurrection of the Son and the arrival of the Spirit are linked together.
16 And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him;
Matt 3:16 “16 And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him;”
We are promised eternal life and the evidence is the Holy Spirit!
I call your attention again to John 16:7
7 Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.
And in Ephesians chapter 1:
11 In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will, 12 so that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of his glory.
Eph 1:11 “11 In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will,”
What is the inheritance we are promised?
It’s what we see in the paragraph before, in Eph Ch 1 verses 3-10 we are:
Adopted sons and daughters of the Father
Through the death and resurrection of the Son
Made holy and blameless by the sanctifying work of the Spirit
13 In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.
When you hear and believe you are sealed
You are sealed with the Holy Spirit of God Himself
You are GUARANTEED the inheritance of eternal life and when all is over on this earth, you will come into possession of it
Indeed, to be away from the body is to be at home with the Lord
Sinner: recognize you are lost and perishing. You have broken the commandments of the thrice holy God
Repent toward God and have faith in the Lord Jesus
Walk holy and blameless before Him
Be a disciple-making disciple of Christ
Matt 28:19-20 “19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.””
