21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
We are all familiar with the idea of trade and exchange.
Surrendering of one thing for another thing.
It has been the way of man since before money...
In 1867 the US and Russia made an exchange of money for land.
We would pay $7.2 million ($125 million) and receive what many would call; Seward’s Folly, Sewards Ice Chest or officially the Alaska Purchase.
Today, Sewards Folly (named for US Secretary of State William H. Seward) produces
490 million barrels of crude oil a year (2nd largest state)
Commercial fishing alone (not counting tourism) $2.1 billion annually
2.2 million people/year travel to Alaska and spend $2.2 billion
I would say that Sewards Ice Box has paid off!
In 1626 there was perhaps the greatest deal that man has ever made…
Peter Minuit, the director of New Netherlands, a colony of the Dutch would purchase what would become known as the Manhattan Purchase for about 60 guilders - or $24 of todays money from the Lenape tribe…
One of the greatest trades of all times!
Or worst trades of all times…
Standing today in that 14-15,000 acre purchase is
One World Trade Center, tallest building in western hemisphere, a symbol of resilience and rebirth after 9-11 attacks.
Central park
Times Square with al it’s lights, entertainment, theaters and shopping
The Empire State Building in Midtown
Central Park Zoo
Statue of Liberty
The High line
The Museum of Modern Art housing some of the most expensive works in the world
Broadway theater district
The Manhattan Purchase has to go down as one of the most lopsided purchases in world history!
We have all experience good deals…
And we have all been taken advantage of...
No one EVER set out to be taken advantage of!
Post their SS# online...
Post their banking info online...
We guard passwords, change them every few months, lock our doors, protect ourselves from getting scammed, robbed or taken advantage of...
But 2Cor5.21 tells of an exchange that makes NO sense...
I Jesus will become sin so that you have have righteousness!
That makes no sense!
God hates sin… and was willing to become sin?
Why? So that we could become righteousness!
21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
What a deal!!!!
Lopsided yes! But to our benefit!
13 And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses;
14 Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;
15 And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.
What does all that mean?
Verse 13 - You were dead!
Rom 3:23 - all have sinned
Rom 6:23 - Wages of sin is death
Verse 14 - Legal proceedings
All the proof of you being a sinner who was to die was established in the law
Every deposition, all proof was nailed to the cross!
Verse 15 - How?
He paid the price!
What an exchange!
All my sin...
In exchange for His grace in my life!
Look at this exchange...
Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
Every pain, burden, hurt, anger
In exchange for his peace!
And this exchange…
17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.
Every insecurity, every addiction, every fear
In exchange for a new way of thinking!
Trade the old man for the new man!
Conclusion:
The story of Easter is one of Devine Exchange!
