Jesus' glory revealed at Cana

NOTE: This is the 4th sermon in a series that follows the Gospel of John from Christmas through the Easter season.

SIGNS THAT REVEAL JESUS

John does not tell us about all the miracles Jesus did. “Jesus also did many other things. If they were all written down, I suppose the whole world could not contain the books that would be written.” (John 21:25) Instead John tells us about specific “signs” that reveal something about Jesus.

1. Water into wine (2:1-11)

2. Cleansing the Temple (2:13-22)

3. Healing the nobleman’s son (4:46-53)

4. Healing a lame man (5:1-15)

5. Feeding of the 5,000 (6:1-15)

6. Healing a man born blind (9:1-41)

7. Raising Lazarus from the dead (11:1-44)

Turning water into wine revealed Jesus to his disciples. Almost no one else even knew this miracle had taken place, but the result was that the disciples’ now knew for sure that Jesus was someone very special.

(Food for thought: Moses turned water into blood and brought sorrow while Jesus turned water into wine and brought joy. Jesus turns wine into blood and brings salvation.)

JESUS' TIME

Jesus tells his mother, “My time has not yet come.” Five times John mentions that Jesus’ time has not yet come. (2:4; 7:6, 8, 30; 8:20). Three times Jesus says his time has come (12:23; 13:1; 17:1.) As we read these passages it becomes clear that Jesus is referring to his time of death.

JESUS' GLORY

This is closely tied to his glory which is revealed in this miracle. His glory is his resurrection. More precisely it refers to his resurrected state. This is why he must die before he can enter into his glory. It is this glory that he gives to us when we have faith in him.

How is Jesus’ glory revealed by turning water into wine?

•Physically – Jesus demonstrates he has power over nature.

•Relationally – Jesus saves the host from humiliation.

•Symbolically – Here water is turned into wine. On the cross, by the shedding of his blood, death is turned into life.
