Mark 1:1 …it seemed good to me also, having followed all things closely for some time past, to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus…In the first book, O Theophilus, I have dealt with all that Jesus began to do and teach, Luke 1:3; Acts 1:1 What events does the gospel include? 1. Christ died. • Penalty: “for our sins” for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, Romans 3:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:23 What events does the gospel include? 1. But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned— every one—to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all. Isaiah 53:4–6 What events does the gospel include? 1. Pilate was surprised to hear that he should have already died. Mark 15:42–47 And when he learned from the centurion that he was dead, he granted the corpse to Joseph. And Joseph bought a linen shroud, and taking him down, wrapped him in the linen shroud and laid him in a tomb that had been cut out of the rock. And he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb. Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses saw where he was laid. Mark 15:42–47 What events does the gospel include? 1. Christ was raised again on the third day. • • Attested to by individuals Attested to by crowds How can this news affect me? • Hear the news (“preached,” 2x) How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? Romans 10:14 How can this news affect me? • Hear the news (“preached,” 2x) • Accept the news: “received…believed” For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” Romans 10:13 How can this news affect me? • Hear the news (“preached,” 2x) • Accept the news: “received…believed” • Live in the news: “stand…being saved… hold fast” Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. Romans 5:1–2 Of First Importance 1 Corinthians 15:1– 8
