OPENING

The power of the resurrection is not in the empty tomb, but in the risen Savior! Jesus completed the plan of salvation on the cross, He canceled our sin debt by paying it in full with His blood, and He conquered our enemy. It’s all because of Jesus! But Jesus didn’t just die on the cross, He also rose from the dead on the third day as the receipt that says, “paid in full!” And because Jesus rose from the grave, Colossians 2:13 says that we who have accepted Jesus as Savior and Lord have been “made alive in Him.” In this message, we are going to look at what it means to Come Alive in Jesus!

SCRIPTURE

Colossians 2:9–15 NKJV
9 For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily; 10 and you are complete in Him, who is the head of all principality and power. 11 In Him you were also circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the sins of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, 12 buried with Him in baptism, in which you also were raised with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead. 13 And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses, 14 having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. 15 Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it.

MESSAGE

Jesus Completed Our Salvation
Colossians 2:10 “10 and you are complete in Him, who is the head of all principality and power.”
We Were Crucified With Him - On the Cross
Colossians 2:11 “11 In Him you were also circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the sins of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ,”
Romans 6:6 NKJV
6 knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin.
We Were Buried With Him - In the Tomb
Colossians 2:12 “12 buried with Him in baptism...
Romans 6:3 NKJV
3 Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death?
We Were Raised With Him - From the Dead
Colossians 2:12 “12 buried with Him in baptism, in which you also were raised with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead.”
Romans 6:4–5 NKJV
4 Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection,
We Will Be Glorified With Him - In Heaven One Day
Colossians 2:13 “13 And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses,”
Philippians 3:20–21 NKJV
20 For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, 21 who will transform our lowly body that it may be conformed to His glorious body, according to the working by which He is able even to subdue all things to Himself.
Jesus Canceled Our Debt
Colossians 2:14 “14 having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.”
Roman customs
The charges against criminals were written down and posted next to the criminal.
Laws were repealed and debts were canceled by driving a nail through them.
Once the debt was paid in full, it was either covered with or written over with a word, “tetelestai” - IT IS FINISHED!
Jesus Canceled Our Debt
My sins and your sins were placed upon the perfect spotless Lamb of God.
The only accusation against Him was “This is the King of the Jews!”
Jesus took the debt that we owed and paid it in full!
The nails were driven through His hands and His feet.
And He declared the completion of the plan of salvation when He cried out, “TETELESTAI - IT IS FINISHED.”
And His precious blood flowed down the cross and covered every sin, every debt, every accusation, everything that was against us declaring to us and to the world that it has all been PAID IN FULL!
Jesus Conquered Our Enemy
He Disarmed the Enemy
Colossians 2:15 “15 Having disarmed principalities and powers...
After the sin in the Garden of Eden, the devil had weapons.
But Jesus disarmed the enemy at the cross!
When a king would be victorious over another king or leader, he would disarm the enemy, and sometimes would even cut off their thumbs so that they could never again hold a sword.
If we are in Jesus, the enemy has no power over us!
No weapon formed against us shall prosper!
At the name of Jesus, demons have to flee!
He Disgraced the Enemy
Colossians 2:15 “15 ...He made a public spectacle of them...
After defeating an enemy, kings would bind them and parade them through the kingdom to humiliate them and let everyone know that the enemy had been defeated.
Jesus prophesied before His death:
John 2:19 ...“Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.””
Matthew 12:40 “40 For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.”
Where was Jesus and what was He doing for three days and three nights?
1 Peter 3:19 “19 by whom also He went and preached to the spirits in prison,”
Jesus went to the souls in prison in Sheol to proclaim the Good News!
The devil intended the cross to be a place of defeat, but instead it became the symbol of the greatest victory the world has every seen!
The devil intended the cross to be a place of to destroy of God’s plan of redemption, but instead it became the source of salvation!
The devil intended the cross to be a place of death to the Son of God, but instead it became the source of eternal life to everyone who comes to Jesus by faith!
He Defeated the Enemy
Colossians 2:15 “15 ...triumphing over them in it.”
Jesus said, “the cross is the means of salvation. I’ve accomplished what the Father sent me to accomplish. It is finished. Tetelestai. The victory has been won.”
But Jesus said, “I’m not finished yet. There is something else I’ve got to do. I’m about to prove to you I AM THAT I AM. You thought the cross was something, well you ain’t seen nothing yet!”
John 10:18 “18 ...I have power to lay it [My life] down, and I have power to take it [My life] again..."
“I’ve already paid the debt in full and now I’m about to show you the receipt!”
The Bible says in Ephesians 4:8 [that Jesus] “8 ...led captivity captive, And gave gifts to men.””
Jesus took those in Abraham’s bosom, in the place of Paradise, the OT saints of God, and took them to Heaven! The work of the cross was finished and their sins were now not just temporarily covered, but eternally forgiven and erased!
And on the third day, Jesus rose from the dead!
And something powerful happened:
Matthew 27:52–53 NKJV
52 and the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised; 53 and coming out of the graves after His resurrection, they went into the holy city and appeared to many.
All of this demonstrates that Jesus has all power over death, hell, and the grave!
And Jesus has the power to give life!
Come Alive in Jesus!
Romans 8:11 NKJV
11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.
Romans 8:11 M:BCL
11 It stands to reason, doesn’t it, that if the alive-and-present God who raised Jesus from the dead moves into your life, he’ll do the same thing in you that he did in Jesus, bringing you alive to himself? When God lives and breathes in you (and he does, as surely as he did in Jesus), you are delivered from that dead life. With his Spirit living in you, your body will be as alive as Christ’s!
He Got Up!
Jesus is alive and well!
And because He triumphed over the grave, He invites you to experience His resurrection power in every area of your life!
Come Alive In Jesus!
Jesus overcame the power of sin! Come out from the bondage of sin and COME ALIVE IN JESUS!
Jesus overcame the power of death! Come out of spiritual death and COME ALIVE IN JESUS!
Jesus destroyed the power of the Law and nailed it to the Cross. Come out of legalism and COME ALIVE IN JESUS!
Jesus triumphed over all the works of the devil. Come out of demonic oppression and COME ALIVE IN JESUS!
