Goodness is usually defined "in the eye of the beholder". This rich, young ruler desired eternal life but could not agree to Jesus' terms. This man's wealth and possession had a hold on him to such an extent that he gave away an opportunity of a lifetime - to be with Jesus and the "inner" circle of His disciples.
His problem is that he lacked the open, child-like trust in God and desired his independence with all the wealth & property that goes with it, before a contentment in God alone.
