Welcome to our 2nd Service on this Easter Morning
If you were here earlier you remember we talked about the empty tomb and how that changes everything
If you missed that I would encourage you to go out to our YouTube channel MBFTopeka and listen to it
The empty tomb changes everything
This morning I want us to take a closer look at a purpose in Jesus coming
John 10:10 NASB95
10 “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.
These are Jesus’s words
Jesus Himself shares the reason He came so that you and I would have life
Not just a life this world offers but an abundant life through Christ
To have that abundant life Jesus had to do something
We what that something was right
John 10:11 NASB95
11 “I am the good shepherd; the good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep.
Jesus is the good shepherd and the good shepherd laid His life down for you and I
In laying down our life Jesus also does something amazing
See Jesus does a restoration in us through His death and resurrection
It is highlighted in the story of Peter during the arrest and resurrection of Jesus
Peter was one of the 12 Apostles
Peter was most likely one of the leaders of the Apostles
If you will recall last week Peter was pulling Jesus aside and telling Jesus hey this whole arrest and death thing is not going to happen
We know that Jesus is arrested, we know that Jesus is put on trial
Its almost as if during that trial Peters true colors come out right
Matthew 26:71–75 NASB95
71 When he had gone out to the gateway, another servant-girl saw him and said to those who were there, “This man was with Jesus of Nazareth.” 72 And again he denied it with an oath, “I do not know the man.” 73 A little later the bystanders came up and said to Peter, “Surely you too are one of them; for even the way you talk gives you away.” 74 Then he began to curse and swear, “I do not know the man!” And immediately a rooster crowed. 75 And Peter remembered the word which Jesus had said, “Before a rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.” And he went out and wept bitterly.
This is just after Jesus was arrested
This is the same guy who pulled Jesus aside and said this whole arrest thing is going to happen
The same guy who also said I will follow you even unto death
They are trying to lump Peter in with Jesus and He is denying him and He denies Him 3 times and then the rooster crows
Peter then remembers
Imagine the guilt and shame he must have felt
But church that doesn’t end Peter’s story
It may feel like Peter’s story is over but it is not
We know that Jesus goes on to die on the cross
We know that He is buried
And then 3 days later Jesus rises from the grave never to die again
Peter goes and looks at the empty tomb
And see that Jesus His best friend is no longer there
Then something amazing happens and I think is a picture for us to take note of
John 21:3–7 NASB95
3 Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.” They said to him, “We will also come with you.” They went out and got into the boat; and that night they caught nothing. 4 But when the day was now breaking, Jesus stood on the beach; yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. 5 So Jesus said to them, “Children, you do not have any fish, do you?” They answered Him, “No.” 6 And He said to them, “Cast the net on the right-hand side of the boat and you will find a catch.” So they cast, and then they were not able to haul it in because of the great number of fish. 7 Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord.” So when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put his outer garment on (for he was stripped for work), and threw himself into the sea.
The disciples decide they are going fishing
There must be something biblical about fishing
This guy from the shore yells at them
They don’t know who it is until John says that it is Jesus
Notice what Peter did
Remember this is the same guy who just denied even knowing His best friend
This is the same guy who was most likely overcome with shame and guilt knowing what he had done
Peter throws himself into the sea to get to Jesus His
He is that excited to get to Jesus His best friend
The other guys show up with some fish and they sit around another fire and eat
Remember it was around a fire that Peter denies Jesus
then look what Jesus does around this fire
John 21:15–17 NASB95
15 So when they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me more than these?” He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.” He said to him, “Tend My lambs.” 16 He said to him again a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me?” He said to Him, “Yes, Lord; You know that I love You.” He said to him, “Shepherd My sheep.” 17 He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love Me?” Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, “Do you love Me?” And he said to Him, “Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You.” Jesus said to him, “Tend My sheep.
Jesus asks him 3 times if He loves Him
Peter at first had denied Him 3 times and then during this time tells Jesus He loves Him 3 times
See Jesus came for restoration to restore not only Peter but us as well
Earlier I said that Jesus came for something amazing
It was restoration
The picture of restoration is seen through the account of Peter at the arrest and after the resurrection
Peter is restored
You might be sitting here thinking that is great for peter but what does that mean for me
I am so glad you asked
You and I are like Peter in this story
It is easy for us to sit up here on Sundays and talk about Peter
We talk about Peter almost as if we have it all together
Church I think we are no different than Peter
In fact I know we are no different than Peter
Because something happen some 6 to 10 thousand years ago at the beginning of everything
Genesis 3:6–8 NASB95
6 When the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was desirable to make one wise, she took from its fruit and ate; and she gave also to her husband with her, and he ate. 7 Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loin coverings. 8 They heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden.
that something church that makes us so much like Peter
It is the fact that sin enter the world
because of that we have a sin nature and 100% of the time leads to being a sinner
You may have never denied the Lord in front of others
You may have never not said anything when given the opportunity to share about what Jesus has done in your life
But
Church you and I are all still sinners
The only difference between Peter and us is that you chapters weren’t written in the Bible for all to read about and talk about
You can sit there and argue this morning that you have never done that or would never do that but then there is pride
Or whatever
Maybe it is not just one sin that you struggle with, lets be honest it is rarely just one
We could probably spend most of the day listing out sin that you and I do
See that is what makes us just like Peter
Peter was a sinner who denied Jesus
We are sinners just the same
Just like Peter’s story didn’t end with Him denying Jesus, yours doesn’t have to end in sin
Just like Jesus restored Peter this morning because of the death and resurrection you can be restored just like Peter
Paul says this in Romans
Romans 5:8 NASB95
8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
Those of you who have been at Maranatha Baptist Fellowship for sometime you know this is my favorite verse
It also has my favorite word in there
The reason it is my favorite verse is because it means that you and I don’t have to get it all together before we come to Christ
We don’t have to get ourselves clean up and ready for Jesus to accept us
We don’t have to deal with our sin problem all on our own
It means that Jesus knowing Peter was still a sinner and turned His back on Him love Peter enough to die for Peter while Peter was still an enemy of Gods
It means that Jesus knowing that Jeremy was a sinner and still in sin loved Jeremy enough to die for Jeremy while Jeremy was still an enemy of God’s
Church that is what makes today so special
That Jesus is still very much in the restoring business
CLOSING
As the band comes up
If you are here this morning and still caught up in sin please here me, God can and will restore you God can and will bring you back to life but it is only through a personal relationship with Jesus
There are people down here waiting to show you through scripture how you are to repent and believe in Jesus
Or maybe like Peter you already have a relationship with Jesus but because of sin you have walked away and this morning Jesus is calling you back
Or maybe this morning you need to just spend sometime in Christ
The altar is open
This doesn’t end Peters story
Just like your sin
Possible about the purpose that Jesus came is found in John 21, when he restores Peter
But Peter had to leave everything else, the diving into the water and leaving the fishing to go to Jesus
And then believe Jesus when he spoke to Him and that He truly is the Son of God
Jesus came to restore you and I
Because almost 6-10 thousand years ago something happened
Sin entered the world
From that moment There has been separation between us and God
God sent his only son Jesus to die on the cross to pay for your sin and my sin alike so that we could be restored to what it was like in the garden
Because of Christ we can and will have eternal life with God similar to what it was like in the garden
That is only possible though a personal relationship with Christ
