Introduction - Reminder of the gospel preached

1 Corinthians 15:1–2 ESV
1 Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, 2 and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you—unless you believed in vain.
He is saying “I’m going to remind you of what I’ve already taught you”

First Importance - 1 Corinthians 15:3-5

Christ Died in accordance with the scriptures (verse 3)

1 Corinthians 15:3 ESV
3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures,

“Christ died”

We discussed this uncomfortable topic on Friday
We know that his death was not simply “death”.
It was not a peaceful death - crucifixion was a horrible way to die
He indeed did die

“for our sins” - the most painful and loving part of Christ’s death

He died for the sins of his people - to anyone who would believe - from any tribe, tongue, or nation.
He had to die for our sins because we have fallen short of God’s glory - we have sin and a sin nature that lives within us inherited from our forefather Adam.
We stood condemned under law of God - unable to follow it - unable to work ourselves to God.
So God sent his one and only Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, into the world - both truly God and truly man
He lived a perfect life - fulfilling every aspect of the law - and then was killed upon a roman cross - for our sins.
We discussed on Friday that he was made a curse for us - meaning that he bore the weight of our sin upon his shoulders
God’s wrath was poured out on Jesus - wrath that was due for you and I - he took on the wrath that God had against our sin.

“in accordance with the scriptures”

This death that Christ endured was predicted and prophesied by the scriptures from long ago!
And was fulfilled perfectly by Christ
Isaiah 53:4–6 ESV
4 Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. 5 But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed. 6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

Paul shared with them that Christ was buried and rose again (v.4)

1 Corinthians 15:4 ESV
4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures,

“he was buried”

We indeed know that he was buried
The tomb also had a giant rock rolled in front of it which then also had a rope and a seal on it.
Meaning that anyone who broke the seal would be going against the rule and authority of Caesar
The tomb was guarded by roman solders

“he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures”

Christ rose again on the third day!
He promised it himself and now it has come to pass
In his own teaching several times and it was predicted in the old testament
Psalm 16:10 ESV
10 For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol, or let your holy one see corruption.

How do we know he was raised?

1 Corinthians 15:5–8 ESV
5 and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. 6 Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep. 7 Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. 8 Last of all, as to one untimely born, he appeared also to me.
We have eyewitnesses!
People that witnessed the risen Christ!
People who touched him!
1 John 1:1–3 ESV
1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we looked upon and have touched with our hands, concerning the word of life— 2 the life was made manifest, and we have seen it, and testify to it and proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and was made manifest to us— 3 that which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ.

Why is it important that Christ raised from the dead?

If Christ was not raised from the dead then we will not be raised from the dead!

Context - Corinthian believers were questioning Christ’s resurrection from the dead and there own future resurrection to occur
1 Corinthians 15:12–19 ESV
12 Now if Christ is proclaimed as raised from the dead, how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? 13 But if there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised. 14 And if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain. 15 We are even found to be misrepresenting God, because we testified about God that he raised Christ, whom he did not raise if it is true that the dead are not raised. 16 For if the dead are not raised, not even Christ has been raised. 17 And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins. 18 Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. 19 If in Christ we have hope in this life only, we are of all people most to be pitied.

Point: If Christ was not raised then we would still be in our trespasses and sins! Our faith would be futile!

One man brought death - one brought resurrection life

1 Corinthians 15:20–22 ESV
20 But in fact Christ has been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. 21 For as by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead. 22 For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive.
Adam brought death, Christ brought resurrection life
In Adam all die, so also in Christ all will be made alive
