Obedience
Obedience
This makes sense, for the Mount of Olives overlooks the city and the eastern side of the Temple Mount itself. But it also makes sense in view of Jesus’ interest in acting out an agenda informed by themes and images in the prophecy of Zechariah: “On that day his feet shall stand on the Mount of Olives which lies before Jerusalem on the east” (Zech 14:4).
Literally, “Hosanna!” is a request for help (Burger, Jesus als Davidssohn, 47). Because the הוֹשִׁיעָה hôšɩ̂˓̯ of “Hosanna!” and the Hebrew/Aramaic form of Jesus’ name (יְהוֹשׁוּעַ yĕhôšǔa˓/ יֵשׁוּעַ yēšǔa˓) are derived from the verb יָשַׁע yāša˓, “save,”
Gundry (630) suspects that the cry “Hosanna!” was directed to Jesus rather than to God.
