Scripture Reading: Isaiah 53:1-7
Scripture Reading: Isaiah 53:1-7
1 Who has believed what he has heard from us? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed? 2 For he grew up before him like a young plant, and like a root out of dry ground; he had no form or majesty that we should look at him, and no beauty that we should desire him. 3 He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief; and as one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not. 4 Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. 5 But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed. 6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all. 7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so he opened not his mouth.
Hymn: How Great Thou Art
Hymn: How Great Thou Art
Oh Lord, my God
When I, in awesome wonder
Consider all the worlds Thy hands have made
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder
Thy power throughout the universe displayed
Chorus:
Then sings my soul, my Savior God to Thee
How great Thou art, how great Thou art
Then sings my soul, my Savior God to Thee
How great Thou art, how great Thou art
And when I think that God, His Son not sparing
Sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in
That on the cross, my burden gladly bearing
He bled and died to take away my sin
When Christ shall come, with shout of acclamation
And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart
Then I shall bow, in humble adoration
And then proclaim, my God, how great Thou art

1 Now after the Sabbath, toward the dawn of the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb. 2 And behold, there was a great earthquake, for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled back the stone and sat on it. 3 His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing white as snow. 4 And for fear of him the guards trembled and became like dead men. 5 But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. 6 He is not here, for he has risen, as he said. Come, see the place where he lay. 7 Then go quickly and tell his disciples that he has risen from the dead, and behold, he is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him. See, I have told you.” 8 So they departed quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy, and ran to tell his disciples. 9 And behold, Jesus met them and said, “Greetings!” And they came up and took hold of his feet and worshiped him. 10 Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid; go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee, and there they will see me.”
Hymn: Come Behold the Wondrous Mystery
Hymn: Come Behold the Wondrous Mystery
Come behold the wondrous mystery
In the dawning of the King
He, the theme of heaven's praises
Robed in frail humanity
In our longing, in our darkness
Now the Light of Life has come
Look to Christ, who condescended
Took on flesh to ransom us
Come behold the wondrous mystery
He, the perfect Son of Man
In His living, in His suffering
Never trace nor stain of sin
See the true and better Adam
Come to save the hell-bound man
Christ the great and sure fulfillment
Of the law; in Him we stand
Come behold the wondrous mystery
Christ, the Lord upon the tree
In the stead of ruined sinners
Hangs the Lamb in victory
See the price of our redemption
See the Father's plan unfold
Bringing many sons to glory
Grace unmeasured, love untold
Come behold the wondrous mystery
Slain by death, the God of life
But no grave could e'er restrain Him
Praise the Lord; He is alive
What a foretaste of deliverance
How unwavering our hope
Christ in power resurrected
As we will be when He comes

Leader: Jesus rides into Jerusalem upon a donkey. The crowd cheers, laying palm branches at his feet.
Congregation: “Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”
Leader: Jesus prepares his disciples for what’s to come. The God of the universe kneels and washes their feet, instructing them to do likewise.
Congregation: Hosanna! Alleluia!
Leader: Jesus is arrested and unfairly tried. An offer is given—Rome can release Jesus the Messiah or the notorious prisoner, Barabbas. The crowd responds,
Congregation: Give us Barabbas!
Leader: Pilate asks, “What should be done with Jesus who is called the Messiah?”
Congregation: Crucify him!
Leader: Jesus is mocked, beaten, a crown of thorns viciously pressed into his brow. Forced to carry the tool of his own execution, he stumbles. Nails are driven through his feet and hands. The cross is raised before the glaring crowd—his charges clearly visible.
Congregation: The king of the Jews.
Leader: Soldiers cast lots for his clothes. He thirsts and is given vinegar. He cries out in desperation, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me.” He gives up his spirit.
Congregation: It is finished.
Leader: Days later, the women head to a borrowed tomb where his body has been placed, but the large stone blocking the tomb has been rolled away. His body is gone, and in its place are nicely folded burial clothes. An angel speaks:
Congregation: “Don’t be alarmed. You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here.”
Leader (emphatically): He’s alive! He’s alive! Christ the Lord is risen today. He has conquered death!
Congregation: And just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glorious power of the Father, now we also may live new lives, freed from the sin that once held us captive in death!
Leader: He is risen!
Congregation: And in him, we are renewed.
Hymn: Rock of Ages
Hymn: Rock of Ages
Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
let me hide myself in thee;
let the water and the blood,
from thy wounded side which flowed,
be of sin the double cure;
save from wrath and make me pure.
Not the labors of my hands
can fulfill thy law's demands;
could my zeal no respite know,
could my tears forever flow,
all for sin could not atone;
thou must save, and thou alone.
Nothing in my hand I bring,
simply to the cross I cling;
naked, come to thee for dress;
helpless, look to thee for grace;
foul, I to the fountain fly;
wash me, Savior, or I die.
While I draw this fleeting breath,
when mine eyes shall close in death,
when I soar to worlds unknown,
see thee on thy judgment throne,
Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
let me hide myself in thee.

16 Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. 17 And when they saw him they worshiped him, but some doubted. 18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
