have the church praying for P. Melvin
We often think the book of Proverbs is a book for me to have a successful life ( which much of it is).
Or how to practically navigate bad or overwhelming situations whether preventive situations or in the moment.
But ultimately the point of proverbs is to bring all of those things in relation to God and He becomes the center of it all.
Just one example.
8 Remove falsehood and lies far from me; Give me neither poverty nor riches— Feed me with the food allotted to me;
9 Lest I be full and deny You, And say, “Who is the Lord?” Or lest I be poor and steal, And profane the name of my God.
He’s like give me neither poverty nor riches not for my sake alone but for your name sake.
Do you see what this says about God? The wise man prays, “Guard me from riches and guard me from poverty.” Why? Because if I’m rich I might say, “Who needs God!” And if I’m poor I might steal. And why is that so bad? Because you might get caught and go to jail? Or because you might lose your reputation? No. He says, Because if I steal, I will profane the name of my God.
Riches are dangerous because the ultimate issue is God. And poverty is dangerous because the ultimate issue is God. The book of Proverbs—the most practical, down-to-earth book in the Bible—is written for God’s sake. That we might not deny God in our prosperity and that we might not profane God in the hour of need.
Lord this is all about you.
If you are reading proverbs in any other light apart from God being the target issue. His glory being the driving and motivating factor we have to check our hearts .
That goes along with our church life our relationships our Bible reading etc. etc.
10 My son, if sinners entice you, Do not consent.
So you have two things you have the enticer and the enticed.
The enticer is the initiator, the enticed is the responder.
Entice- means gullible, be simple, inexpert, this one will resonate to be open minded
How many times have you heard this! Open mindedness
To the world being open minded is a positive.
You see how such a term can be used to disarm us.
You don’t want to be seen as not being opened minded.
Enticement starts with them saying be more open minded.
Eve was enticed and satan used the idea that she was closed minded. And that something was missing and she needed to be in the know
So the serpent enticed eve. and used open mindedness to do so.
What are some things I could be enticed to do.
Drink, smoke, curse, fight, lust
Shout out what sinners could entice you to do.
Being enticed has less to do with the world initiation, but more to do with my response
Satan wants to entice you into believe something that doesn’t correspond with reality.
A lie is something that doesn’t correspond with reality.
Jesus showed His distain for evil companions.
11 If they say, “Come with us, Let us lie in wait to shed blood; Let us lurk secretly for the innocent without cause;
12 Let us swallow them alive like Sheol, And whole, like those who go down to the Pit;
13 We shall find all kinds of precious possessions, We shall fill our houses with spoil;
14 Cast in your lot among us, Let us all have one purse”—
15 My son, do not walk in the way with them, Keep your foot from their path;
16 For their feet run to evil, And they make haste to shed blood.
17 Surely, in vain the net is spread In the sight of any bird;
18 But they lie in wait for their own blood, They lurk secretly for their own lives.
19 So are the ways of everyone who is greedy for gain; It takes away the life of its owners.
The pressures of peers and friends can be strong.
The constant repetition of “we, and us” points to the strength of the gangs peer pressure here.
These are a group of people with murderous intentions. ( Let us wait for innocent blood)
They want to rob and steal to divide the money amongst each of them.
And though maybe this isn’t your realm but these things happen in life,
They plotted on Jesus the same way.
2 Kings 2:23–24 (NKJV)
23 Then he went up from there to Bethel; and as he was going up the road, some youths came from the city and mocked him, and said to him, “Go up, you baldhead! Go up, you baldhead!”
24 So he turned around and looked at them, and pronounced a curse on them in the name of the Lord. And two female bears came out of the woods and mauled forty-two of the youths.
Them saying “go up” baldly was implying that Elisha should go away like Elijah.
Elisha baldness could’ve came from leperosy
But being bald back then wasn’t desirable so guys use to wear a head covering.
Its important for us to know God fights for us
Even when Abraham was wrong about for lying about Sarah being his sister God fought for him.
