and as we will see this binds us together in God’s love
and so we also love each other
20 If someone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen? 21 And this commandment we have from Him: that he who loves God must love his brother also.
He is returning the love with love.
because
When someone means so much to you
and you have been away from them
you remember all the great times
and you want the best for them
and so Paul makes request for them with joy
which we will see what those requests are in verses 9-11
which is huge because
ancient prisons didnt always feed you 3 square meals a day.
This book says “I” all throughout and its referring to Paul
Paul mentions Timothy because they would have been familiar with Timothy
and Paul also says in Philippians 2:19
that he is hoping to send Timothy to them later.
but Paul is clearly the author.
He saved you, He will sanctify you, He will perfect you.
Its all His work
Warren Wiersbe said:
the work God does for us—salvation;
the work God does in us—sanctification;
the work God does through us—service.
(like the Corinthians church was in allowing immorality 1 Corinthians 5:1-7)
The Gk word for sincere means to be unmixed, or judged by the sunlight.
our English word “sincere” comes from
2 Latin word “sine” - without
and “cera” - wax
What does our word sincere have to do with being without wax?
or being judged by the sunlight. or unmixed
in the Roman world they had many artisans
that made statues and marble carved art.
and maybe the artisan was finishing up
this beautiful statue and on the last hit
the nose breaks off
Well there was a trick they knew
where they would mix with wax
and be able to reattach a broken piece or
fill a crack with this wax.
So that it appeared perfect
so people would buy it
and people would take this beautiful statue home
unknowingly
but when the hot sun
beat down on the statue
the wax would melt
exposing the flaws.
and you would realize that you bought an insincere statue
maybe use this verse somewhere:
3 Are you so foolish? Having begun in the Spirit, are you now being made perfect by the flesh?
