AFTER THE RESURRECTION

Notes
Transcript

Acts 1:1 - 11

1  The former treatise have I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach,
2  Until the day in which he was taken up, after that he through the Holy Ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom he had chosen:
3  To whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God:
4  And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me.
5  For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.
6  When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?
7  And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power.
8  But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
9  And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.
10  And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel;
11  Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.
AFTER THE RESURRECTION
Today is resurrection Sunday. Churches
all over the country are celebrating our
risen Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Some
churches like us will have Holy
Communion today. But during the time
that this book was written
right after Jesus’s resurrection they were
not having open celebrations to celebrate
his resurrection. In fact in Matthew
chapter 28 the Jews tried to cover up the
resurrection of Christ.
Matthew 28:11 (NIV) While the women were on their way, some of the guards went into the city and reported to the chief priests everything that had happened.
12  When the chief priests had met with the elders and devised a plan, they gave the soldiers a large sum of money,
13  telling them, "You are to say, 'His disciples came during the night and stole him away while we were asleep.'  *
JESUS SHOWS HIMSELF
In Luke 24 we read where Jesus showed
himself to two men as he had a meal with
them. The book of John records these
four appearances.
To Mary Magdalene outside of the tomb. 20: 1 - 18.
To ten of the eleven disciples. 20: 19 - 23
To all eleven disciples, with Thomas in the upper room.
To seven of the disciples in Galilee. 21: 1- 25.
THE APOSTLE PAUL GAVE US PROOF OF THE RESURRECTION.
In 1 Corinthians 15 Paul writes that Jesus
was seen by 500 believers at one time.
Paul also writes there that last of all he
was seen of me. Acts 9.
THE MINISTRY OF CHRIST CONTINUES
The former treatise have I made, O Theophilus, of all that Jesus began both to do and teach,
Who was Theophilus? Some believe that
he was a helper to Luke and later to to
Paul. This book was written to
anyone that needed an accurate account
of what Jesus and his followers did and
taught. That it was written to anyone that
is a friend of God. For the name
Theophilus means, friend or beloved of
God. *
Until the day in which he was taken up, after that he through the Holy Ghost had given commandments unto the apostles whom he had chosen:
To whom also he shewed himself alive after his passion by many infallible proofs, being seen of them forty days, and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God:
And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me.
For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.
The period of the evangelical story is fixed
to the day in which he was taken up. It
then that he left this world, and his
bodily presence was no more in it. St.
Mark's gospel concludes with the Lord
being received up into heaven. (Mark 16:19)
The great evidence of his resurrection was
that he showed himself alive to his
apostles; being alive, he showed himself
so, and he was seen of them. They were
honest men, and we may depend upon
their testimony.
Now being assembled together they were
instructed to wait for the promise from
GOD. That promise was the Holy Ghost.
According to John 14 he is a Comforter,
He will stay with you forever , He is the
Spirit of truth and the world (the unsaved)
can not receive him. *
The Bible Knowledge Commentary (1:6)
It is possible that in the disciples’ minds
the outpouring of the Holy Ghost and
the coming of the promised kingdom
were closely associated.
And well they should be, because the
Old Testament frequently joined the
two. (cf. Isa. 32:15–20; 44:3–5; Ezek. 39:28–29; Joel 2:28–3:1; Zech. 12:8–10).
When Christ told the disciples of the
soon-coming Spiritual baptism, they
immediately concluded that the
restoration of Israel’s kingdom was near
in time. *
YOU SHALL RECEIVE POWER
When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?
And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power.
But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
The disciples thought that Jesus would
restore Israel to its glory days. A time
when no one on earth would rule over
them. Jesus lets them know there is no
need for you to know when. But what they
needed to know was that when the Holy
Ghost came they would receive power.
Power here meant ability, strength,
miraculous, abundance and mighty work.
And because of the Holy Ghost they would
have the ability to be witnesses
throughout the world. *
THE ASCENSION
And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.
10  And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel;
11  Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.
Paul lets us know in Colossians 3:1 that
Jesus now sits on the right side of God on
the throne. *
WHAT’S IN IT US?
HOPE
The Apostle Paul told us in 1 Corinthians 15:19 “If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable.”
Because of Christ we can have hope that we will spend eternity with God.
HELP
Psalm 46:1 “God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble.”
Hebrews 4:16 “Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.”
HEALING
1 Peter 2:24 “Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.”
In Luke 4:18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,” *
LIVING HE LOVED ME, DING HE SAVED ME,
RISING HE JUSTIFIED ME, FREED ME
FOREVER. AND ONE DAY HE COMING BACK
FOR ME!!! YEAH!!!!
