1 Corinthians 1:18-25 NLT
“18 The message of the cross is foolish to those who are headed for destruction! But we who are being saved know it is the very power of God.
19 As the Scriptures say,
“I will destroy the wisdom of the wise and discard the intelligence of the intelligent.”
20 So where does this leave the philosophers, the scholars, and the world’s brilliant debaters? God has made the wisdom of this world look foolish.
21 Since God in his wisdom saw to it that the world would never know him through human wisdom, he has used our foolish preaching to save those who believe.
22 It is foolish to the Jews, who ask for signs from heaven. And it is foolish to the Greeks, who seek human wisdom.
23 So when we preach that Christ was crucified, the Jews are offended and the Gentiles say it’s all nonsense.
24 But to those called by God to salvation, both Jews and Gentiles, Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God.
25 This foolish plan of God is wiser than the wisest of human plans, and God’s weakness is stronger than the greatest of human strength.”
V18-19
“18 The message of the cross is foolish to those who are headed for destruction! But we who are being saved know it is the very power of God.
19 As the Scriptures say,
“I will destroy the wisdom of the wise and discard the intelligence of the intelligent.”
What does this mean???
Has anyone here heard someone mock Christianity???
The cross meaning
The cross view now vs the cross viewed to Paul’s readers…
“the offense of the cross in Paul’s context is often lost to the modern Christian for whom the cross is now a symbol of the faith.” (NAC P64)
The cross was an image of shame
The Romans would strip their opponent and nail him to the tree to demonstrate their dominance.
The cross was an extremely shameful way to die...
The weight of shame brought “disgrace, embarrassment, social rejection, and dishonor.”
Not only was the cross shameful but it was painful
The cross was the most painful and degrading form of capital punishment in the ancient world.
George Gottlieb Richter, a German physician, writes this about the cross...

The position of the body is unnatural, the arms being extended back, and almost immovable. In case of the least motion, an extremely painful sensation is experienced in the hands and feet, which are pierced with nails, and in the back, which is lacerated with stripes. The nails, being driven through the parts of the hands and feet which abound in nerves and tendons, create the most exquisite anguish. The exposure of so many wounds to the open air brings on an inflammation, which every moment increases the poignancy of the suffering. In those parts of the body which are distended or pressed, more blood flows through the arteries than can be carried back in the veins. The consequence is, that a greater quantity of blood finds its way from the aorta into the head and stomach, than would be carried there by a natural and undisturbed circulation. The blood vessels of the head become pressed and swollen, which of course causes pain, and a redness of the face. The circumstance of the blood being impelled in more than ordinary quantities into the stomach is an unfavourable one also, because it is that part of the system which not only admits of the blood being stationary, but is peculiarly exposed to mortification. The aorta, not being at liberty to empty, in the free and undisturbed way as formerly, the blood which it receives from the left ventricle of the heart, is unable to receive its usual quantity. The blood of the lungs, therefore, is unable to find a free circulation. This general obstruction extends its effects likewise to the right ventricle, and the consequence is, an internal excitement, and exertion, and anxiety, which are more intolerable than the anguish of death itself.

Sam Halls version....
Yet, the cross was the way to God’s victory
The wisdom of God vs the wisdom of man....
God does things different....
In other words Paul is saying
The cross, was a scandal to Jews (whoever heard of a crucified Messiah?)
The cross, was folly to the gentiles (whoever imagined that an executed Jew might be the lord of the world?) (Wright 486)
V24-25
24 But to those called by God to salvation, both Jews and Gentiles, Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God.
25 This foolish plan of God is wiser than the wisest of human plans, and God’s weakness is stronger than the greatest of human strength.”
The message of the cross has power because it symbolizes the death and resurrection of Jesus
Who would ever thought?
That the cross would bring about God’s victory
Anything good come from Nazareth
Anything good come from the cross
Don’t take for granted the message of the cross
