Acts 2:14-15/ Good Friday

- . For these are not drunk: Peter deflected the mocking criticism that the disciples were drunk. To bring up a point from last week's message the very first thing they were met with was opposition. The church in its very infancy was first met with opposition people who are sneering and laughing and scoffing and saying they're drunk but remember that the spirit still moves even though people were scoffing and God's business was still done that day and so we can sit here every week in church and some do and they scoff and they sneer and they criticized this and they criticized that and all the time God is at work all around them. His Holy Spirit is moving the people who are truly trying to serve God and hear from God be a blessing to others because of God are doing so by the power of God in spite of the ones who are criticizing and have a problem with this and have a problem with that and just like the day of Pentecost the opposition was there they were sneering they were laughing they were saying there a bunch of drunks at 9:00 o'clock in the morning but God was moving and I guess what I'm trying to say is pay attention to what's going on around you seek the face of God daily but seek the face of God also when you come in here, come in here to praise God not to worry about what song they're singing how loud they sing it and what key they sing it in come in here to praise God in every key come in here to praise God during every song come in here to hear something from God through every message and know that God's work is being done whether you're one of the ones who are a part of it or not his work is being done his name is being proclaimed his Holy Spirit is moving.
In that day it was unthinkable that people would be so drunk so early in the day (about 9:00 in the morning).
Commentator Adam Clarke says that most Jews devout or not did not eat or drink until after the third hour of the day, because that was the time for prayer, and they would only eat after their business with God was accomplished. What this tells me is that the Holy Spirit fell on them during the time the Jewish people set aside for prayer every morning. So what that tells me is that yes I can pray throughout the day and yes I can read a verse here and there throughout the day but I need to set a time to meet with God to be serious about my set time with God because God sent his Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost during the time at which every Jewish person considered to be a time spent with God. So far on Pentecost they had a set time, a set place, and so the time and the place was set aside for God in the same way that when we become sanctified fire filled believing Christians we become set aside and when the Holy Spirit came to live inside of them on the day of Pentecost they were sanctified they were baptized in the Holy Spirit they were set aside for God's work. Church we have to be set aside for the work of God we have to be sanctified for the work of God we have to be set aside for God. When we set aside time to read the word of God and not just read it but study it and then we set aside time to pray and spend time with God in our private place in our place that is set aside and then we set aside time to come together and fellowship with other like-minded believers and support each other and love each other all the sudden we ourselves become set aside. You see we continue to see obedience we continue to see fellowship we continue to see unity in prayer and all of these things result in US being set aside for the work of God which is sanctification.
Let's go back to that third hour, “They were persevering in prayer,” they quite rightly received the Holy Spirit at the hour of prayer the third hour 9am., Now we read that three times a day Daniel bent his knees and prayed, and the church understands these to have been the third, sixth and ninth hours.7Also the Lord sent the Holy Spirit at the third hour, he himself ascended the cross at the 3rd hour the day went dark at the 6th hour, and he yielded up his soul at the ninth hour. He thus saw fit to enjoin these same hours preeminently upon the rest of us and to sanctify them. According to Mark,Jesus was crucified at the third hour, has now at the third hour sent his grace. For his grace is not one and the Spirit’s another, but he who was then crucified and had promised to send the Holy Spirit has now fulfilled what he had promised. So I'm gonna stop right here because the Holy Spirit led me to Good Friday. We don't have a Good Friday service but being Holy Week I find it fitting the all of the sermons that I've preached all of the Wednesday nights since the beginning of this year and here I am on Holy Week and my studies lead me directly to Good Friday.

Then he handed him over to be crucified. Then they took Jesus away. Carrying the cross by himself, he went out to what is called Place of the Skull, which in Aramaic is called Golgotha. There they crucified him and two others with him, one on either side, with Jesus in the middle. Pilate also had a sign made and put on the cross. It said: Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews. Many of the Jews read this sign, because the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city, and it was written in Aramaic, Latin, and Greek. So the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, “Don’t write, ‘The king of the Jews,’ but that he said, ‘I am the king of the Jews.’ ” Pilate replied, “What I have written, I have written.” When the soldiers crucified Jesus, they took his clothes and divided them into four parts, a part for each soldier. They also took the tunic, which was seamless, woven in one piece from the top. So they said to one another, “Let’s not tear it, but cast lots for it, to see who gets it.” This happened that the Scripture might be fulfilled that says: They divided my clothes among themselves, and they cast lots for my clothing. This is what the soldiers did. Standing by the cross of Jesus were his mother, his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple he loved standing there, he said to his mother, “Woman, here is your son.” Then he said to the disciple, “Here is your mother.” And from that hour the disciple took her into his home. After this, when Jesus knew that everything was now finished that the Scripture might be fulfilled, he said, “I’m thirsty.” A jar full of sour wine was sitting there; so they fixed a sponge full of sour wine on a hyssop branch and held it up to his mouth. When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished.” Then bowing his head, he gave up his spirit. Since it was the preparation day, the Jews did not want the bodies to remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a special day). They requested that Pilate have the men’s legs broken and that their bodies be taken away. So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first man and of the other one who had been crucified with him. When they came to Jesus, they did not break his legs since they saw that he was already dead. But one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear, and at once blood and water came out. He who saw this has testified so that you also may believe. His testimony is true, and he knows he is telling the truth. For these things happened so that the Scripture would be fulfilled: Not one of his bones will be broken. Also, another Scripture says: They will look at the one they pierced. After this, Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus—but secretly because of his fear of the Jews—asked Pilate that he might remove Jesus’s body. Pilate gave him permission; so he came and took his body away. Nicodemus (who had previously come to him at night) also came, bringing a mixture of about seventy-five pounds of myrrh and aloes. They took Jesus’s body and wrapped it in linen cloths with the fragrant spices, according to the burial custom of the Jews. There was a garden in the place where he was crucified. A new tomb was in the garden; no one had yet been placed in it. They placed Jesus there because of the Jewish day of preparation and since the tomb was nearby.

See, my servant will be successful; he will be raised and lifted up and greatly exalted. Just as many were appalled at you— his appearance was so disfigured that he did not look like a man, and his form did not resemble a human being— so he will sprinkle many nations. Kings will shut their mouths because of him, for they will see what had not been told them, and they will understand what they had not heard. Who has believed what we have heard? And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed? He grew up before him like a young plant and like a root out of dry ground. He didn’t have an impressive form or majesty that we should look at him, no appearance that we should desire him. He was despised and rejected by men, a man of suffering who knew what sickness was. He was like someone people turned away from; he was despised, and we didn’t value him. Yet he himself bore our sicknesses, and he carried our pains; but we in turn regarded him stricken, struck down by God, and afflicted. But he was pierced because of our rebellion, crushed because of our iniquities; punishment for our peace was on him, and we are healed by his wounds. We all went astray like sheep; we all have turned to our own way; and the Lord has punished him for the iniquity of us all. He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth. Like a lamb led to the slaughter and like a sheep silent before her shearers, he did not open his mouth. He was taken away because of oppression and judgment, and who considered his fate? For he was cut off from the land of the living; he was struck because of my people’s rebellion. He was assigned a grave with the wicked, but he was with a rich man at his death, because he had done no violence and had not spoken deceitfully. Yet the Lord was pleased to crush him severely. When you make him a guilt offering, he will see his seed, he will prolong his days, and by his hand, the Lord’s pleasure will be accomplished. After his anguish, he will see light and be satisfied. By his knowledge, my righteous servant will justify many, and he will carry their iniquities. Therefore I will give him the many as a portion, and he will receive the mighty as spoil, because he willingly submitted to death, and was counted among the rebels; yet he bore the sin of many and interceded for the rebels.
