Give Honor
Text: Luke 23:34
34 Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.
There was a lot that happened between Gethsemane and Golgotha.
There’s SO much more that happens before we even get to the cross
After this gruesome moment of prayer,
Jesus now is betrayed by his disciple with a kiss.
and after being betrayed, He’s taken away-
The next few hours were filled with pain and agony
Beginning before 6 am
Jesus was interrogated, beaten, spit on, mocked, scolded, and mistreated for several hours.
It’s crazy that he even made it to the cross, as bad as he was beaten.
He was blindfolded, punched, then told to prophesy about who hit him.-
He gets moved to face the Sanhedrian
Then gets handed over to Pontious Pilate
PONTIOUS PILATE ORDERS JESUS TO GET BEATEN.
so, THEY TAKE Cat’ o nine tails- the whips, with broken pieces of sharp bone and rock and beat him with it.
So that every time he was hit, flesh and bone came from his body.- It was a rough night church.
Then He has to face Herod-who sentences him to crusifixition.
They let a criminal go in His place by the name of Barabus.
They made Jesus take the place of this criminal .
They place a cross on Jesus’ back and he has to carry it up a hill-Church this was a gruesome scene and a long night and Jesus said not a word.
I’m sure Jesus was tired.
They beat him and they beat him
He was done badly.
A crown of thorns was placed on his head causing excruciating pain.
His lips were busted
His eyes were blackened
His hands were nailed
His feet were ribboned
He is now hung on a cross, placed between two theives- church this was a gruesome scene.
There was a sign on the cross that said “This is the King of the Jews”
He’s now hanging on the cross
Hands hurting from the nails drilled in them
Feet hurting from being ribbed
Back hurting from the lacerations
Head hurting from the crown
Body hurting from the beatings
He can barely see
He can barely speak
but he lifts himself up, takes a deep breath and the first thing that came out of his mouth was “Father forgive them, for they do not know what they do”
Now before I get into the forgiveness part. I want you to understand that after everything He had gone through, he still had enough sense to call on the Father.
That After everything that he was struggling with
The pain
The grief
The hurt
The breathing.
He still had enough fortitude to say Father.
And if you want to make it through some rough seasons of your life, you have to have sense enough to call on the Father. But that’s not where I want to go.
He said Father Forgive them.
I want to give three points of reference.
The first point of reference is:
The Place in which HE said it:
The Place in which HE said it:
You see most of the time, people do not forgive until the wounds have healed.
People do not forgive until time has passed.
People do not forgive until the emotions have subsided.
They do not forgive until time permits them.
The initiation of forgiveness is also the beginning of healing!!
You think that forgiveness starts after healing but really the healing starts after the forgiveness
He was not holding a grudge.
HE was not fighting or arguing.
I believe. He honestly wanted God to forgive them.
He really wanted God to let them off the hook. “Ill tell you why in a minute.”
and truth be told
we all have a them in our lives
one who lied on you
one who talked about you
one who misused you
one who did you wrong
But them is who pushed you to your purpose
The second point of reference is
The Persons for whom He said it
The Persons for whom He said it
He said Father Forgive Them.
So many people wanted to know who “Them” was.
Them were the people who beat Him
Them were the people who lied on Him
Them were the people who let an innocent man be killed
Them were the people who plotted it
Them were the people who planned it
Them were the people who executed it
Them were the people who scandalized His name
Them were the people who did Him bad
Them were the people who hurt Him
Them were the people who messed Him over
Them were the people who ruined His character
He said Father forgive THEM. AS IN ALL OF THEM. AS IN NOT JUST SOME OF THEM BUT ALLL OF THEM I NEED YOU TO HAVE COMPASSION ON.
And some of you have some Them’s in your life.
Them did you wrong
Them lied on you
Them cheated
Them misused you
Them tore you down
Them talked about you
Them scandalized your name
But THEM ARE WHO HELPED YOU GET TO WHERE YOU ARE.
THEM DID NOT KNOW YOU WERE COVERED
THEM DID NOT KNOW YOU WERE GOOD
THEM DID NOT KNOW GOD PROVIDED
THEM DID NOT KNOW GOD PROTECTED
THEM DID NOT KNOW GOD HEAD
SO THEM WILL NOT HAVE CONTROL OVER THIS LIFE
FATHER FORGIVE THEM.
AND THE LAST POINT OF REFRENCE IS.
The Purpose of which HE asked
The Purpose of which HE asked
HE said “Father forgive them” because they do not know what they are doing.
They didn’t know who HE WAS
They didn’t know why HE CAME
They didn’t know what HE WAS capable of
They didn’t know where HE CAME me from
They didn’t know HE put the bark in the dog
They didn’t know HE put the meow in the cat
They didn’t know that HE IS the alpha
They didn’t know that HE IS the omega
AND JESUS wanted their guilt to be transformed as innocence based on the lack of knowledge.
They just didn’t know.
So father forgive them, because it’s not their fault.
They thought it was for HIS PAIN
But they helped fulfill HIS purpose
They thought it was for HIS demise
but it was for their development
They thought it was forHIS wrongs
but JESUS let them do it to cover them from theirs.
They though HE was gone stay like this.
They thought HE wasnt gone com back from this
They thought HE was over
But thanks be unto God.
THAT WE ARE ABLE TO SAY
That we are all living today.
Because of what THEY DID.
We are alive today.
Because of what they did.
FATHER FORGIVE THEM.
