Text:
And the passover, a feast of the Jews, was nigh. When Jesus then lifted up his eyes, and saw a great company come unto him, he saith unto Philip, Whence shall we buy bread, that these may eat? And this he said to prove him: for he himself knew what he would do.
Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God? Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent. They said therefore unto him, What sign shewest thou then, that we may see, and believe thee? what dost thou work? Our fathers did eat manna in the desert; as it is written, He gave them bread from heaven to eat. Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Moses gave you not that bread from heaven; but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world. Then said they unto him, Lord, evermore give us this bread. And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst. But I said unto you, That ye also have seen me, and believe not. All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out. For I came down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me. And this is the Father’s will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day. And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.
Bread was needed for them to live, for the sustenance of life.
Focus Scripture:
And this is the Father’s will which hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day. And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.
Jesus said the will of God is that he would not lose one of all the Father has given him.
The will of God is that those who believe on Jesus and receive him, will be raised up at the last day.
This is what this is all about, the hope of a resurrection for us does not happen if Jesus hadn’t came, died, and rose again on the third day.
This is why we celebrate, we not only celebrate the fact that we have been reconciled to God, we not only celebrate the remission of sin, but we celebrate life, we celebrate eternal life and the hope of a future resurrection by Jesus Christ himself!
The bible then declares that they started complaining. They did not believe Jesus, they thought it was impossible for Jesus to have came down from heaven.
They said:
And they said, Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? how is it then that he saith, I came down from heaven?
Jesus therefore answered and said unto them, Murmur not among yourselves. No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.
Look at verse 47:
Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me hath everlasting life. I am that bread of life. Your fathers did eat manna in the wilderness, and are dead. This is the bread which cometh down from heaven, that a man may eat thereof, and not die.
The key words here that Jesus says:
“He that believeth on me hath everlasting life.” I want you to remember those words.
Jesus then says, your ancestors depended on bread in the wilderness to live......yet they still died. But this bread (Jesus is referring to himself) which comes down from heaven, if anyone eats this bread, they will live forever!
I want to link another scripture to this:
And Jesus answering said unto them, Do ye not therefore err, because ye know not the scriptures, neither the power of God? For when they shall rise from the dead, they neither marry, nor are given in marriage; but are as the angels which are in heaven. And as touching the dead, that they rise: have ye not read in the book of Moses, how in the bush God spake unto him, saying, I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? He is not the God of the dead, but the God of the living: ye therefore do greatly err.
The Sadducees who didn’t believe in the resurrection was trying to trap Jesus. They asked him, if a man marries and then dies and if he doesn’t have any children, and then his brother marries her, to keep the family line going, but he dies before having children, and then the next brother marries and so on and so forth, whose wife will she be at the resurrection.
See the Sadducees didn’t believe in the resurrection anyway, they were just trying to see what Jesus was going to say so they could trap him.
But Jesus answered “You err because you don’t understand the scriptures.” Jesus said “when they rise from the dead, they neither marry or give in marriage, but are like the angels in heaven.”
The reason why there is marriage and child-birth is for the continuance of the human. It is the same with any species. But when we get to glory......we won’t have to worry about that ever again, because there will be no more death.
Jesus then says:
“And as touching the dead, that they rise” Jesus told them it is recorded in the law of Moses that when God spoke out of the bush that he said “I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” Jesus said “He is not the God of the dead, but the God of the living: ye therefore do greatly err.”
AND THIS MY FRIEND.....IS THE REASON WHY JESUS SAYS “ANYONE WHO EATS THIS BREAD WILL LIVE FOREVER!”
And Jesus said “and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.”
Jesus gave his body!!! He gave his body so that we could live forever!!! That’s why we ought to celebrate tonight! That’s why when you take communion tonight, you ought to tell the LORD thank you.....thank you for giving your body for me, thank you for giving me eternal life, thank you for saving me, thank you for redeeming me!
Those that were listening to Jesus began to argue with each other, they were trying to understand what Jesus meant. They asked “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?” They were confused, because both the Noahic Law and the Mosaic Law forbid the eating of human flesh and the drinking of blood.
But Jesus wasn’t talking in an actual sense. Jesus was talking from allegoric sense.
Jesus then says:
Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you. Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day. For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him. As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father: so he that eateth me, even he shall live by me. This is that bread which came down from heaven: not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead: he that eateth of this bread shall live for ever.
So Jesus reiterates again “unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you cannot have eternal life within you.”
That sounded harsh to his hearers, even his closest disciples had questions about this, they did not understand Jesus. But guess what, the true disciples, even though they didn’t understand......they stuck with Jesus. And if you are a true disciple of Jesus, sometimes things happen in our walk with Jesus that we may not understand.....but we gotta stick with Jesus!!!!
Jesus also says “anyone who eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in him. This is the union between Christ and the believer. We are in Him and He is in us and we are united with Christ!
Many of the disciples (verse 60) said “this is a hard saying; who can hear it.” It is difficult not only to understand it, but how can anyone accept it.....how can anyone do this.”
And Jesus knew that many of them was offended by what he was teaching them.
Jesus is speaking to those who don’t believe on him. He asks the question:
What and if ye shall see the Son of man ascend up where he was before?
Listen to what verse 63 says and we are going to shift and start preparing for Holy Communion:
It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.
The Spirit alone gives eternal life. Human effort accomplishes nothing. And the very words I have spoken to you are spirit and life.
It is the Spirit alone....that gives eternal life. The flesh, human effort, profiteth or accomplishes nothing. If you are depending on human effort to save you, you won’t be saved.
If you are depending on your own goodness and acts of kindness to save you.....you will not be saved!!!
Only the Spirit alone has the power to save you. Only the Holy Ghost, has the power to save you, to change you, to seal you until the day of redemption.
And the only way that you can receive the Spirit is to believe on Jesus!!! The only way you can be saved, is for you to depend on Jesus the same way you depend on food to live!!!
Without Jesus in my life, I’ll die....with out the LORD helping me I’ll perish.......I NEED JESUS!!!
JOB SAID “I ESTEEM THE WORDS OF HIS MOUTH MORE THAN MY NECASSARY FOOD!” THE FACT OF THE MATTER IS THAT I NEED JESUS......I NEED JESUS IN THE MORNING.......I NEED JESUS IN THE NOONDAY......I NEED JESUS IN THE AFTERNOON.......I NEED JESUS IN THE MIDNIGHT HOUR.
I CAN’T FUNCTION WITHOUT HIM, I CAN’T MOVE WITHOUT HIM, I CAN’T BREATH WITHOUT HIM, I CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT HIM!
End?
I want to go back to verse 6:43-44
Jesus therefore answered and said unto them, Murmur not among yourselves. No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day.
I said before and I’ll say it again, God didn’t have to choose you, he could have left you in your sins, you could have still been on your way to the lake of fire!
But I need someone to testify to your neighbor and tell them “I thank God he choose me!”
The Father drawed me, God choose me, God saved me, I couldn’t save myself, but thank God he showed me the way to be saved, and Jesus Christ is the way.
That’s why the scriptures declare:
And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.
For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren. Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified.
What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us? He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things? Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God’s elect? It is God that justifieth. Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
