Verses 1-21 we see that Jesus shows His power.
Verses 22 - 71 He claims that He is the only one who can save. He is the one that sustains our souls. Nothing else, not your good works, only Jesus, His spirit can give you life.
The Gospel of John chapter six is a significant passage of the Bible that contains Jesus' teaching about His power and sustenance of human souls. The chapter can be divided into four sections: Jesus feeds thousands of people from five loaves and two fish, Jesus walks on water, Jesus proclaims that He is the bread of life that sustains human souls, and the truth is hard to take in and follow. The chapter is crucial to the Christian faith and teaches the importance of faith in Jesus Christ as the savior of humanity.
Jesus' teachings were hard to comprehend and follow, and some people could not accept them, as they were contrary to their beliefs. However, those who believed in Jesus and accepted His teachings found eternal life. The chapter teaches the importance of faith in Jesus Christ as the savior of humanity and the need to accept His teachings, even if they are hard to comprehend.
Verses 1 - 21 // Jesus’ Supernatural Powers
In the first section, verses 1-16, Jesus performs a miracle by feeding thousands of people from five loaves and two fish.
The event attracts a large crowd that follows Jesus because they saw the signs he was doing on the sick.
Jesus takes the five loaves and two fish and miraculously feeds the multitude, and there were still twelve baskets of fragments left over.
The miracle demonstrates Jesus' power and authority over nature and humanity, and it draws the attention of the people to His teachings.
Verses 1 - 16 // Miracle, Jesus feeds thousands of people from 5 loaves and two fish.
John 6:1–2 ESV
1 After this Jesus went away to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, which is the Sea of Tiberias. 2 And a large crowd was following him, because they saw the signs that he was doing on the sick.
John 6:9–10 ESV
9 “There is a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish, but what are they for so many?” 10 Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, about five thousand in number.
John 6:12–13 ESV
12 And when they had eaten their fill, he told his disciples, “Gather up the leftover fragments, that nothing may be lost.” 13 So they gathered them up and filled twelve baskets with fragments from the five barley loaves left by those who had eaten.

Verses 16 - 21 // Jesus casually walks on water. In Matthew, we see that the disciples thought it was a ghost and Peter actually went to go to Jesus
The second section, verses 16-21, records the event where Jesus walks on water.
Jesus' disciples had set out in a boat without Him, and a storm had come up, causing the disciples to be afraid.
They saw Jesus walking on the water towards them and thought he was a ghost. But Jesus reassured them that it was He, and Peter asked to walk on the water to Him.
Peter stepped out of the boat and walked on the water, but when he saw the wind, he began to sink, and Jesus rescued him.
The event reveals Jesus' power over nature and His ability to rescue those who call on Him.
Matthew 14:26–33 ESV
26 But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, and said, “It is a ghost!” and they cried out in fear. 27 But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid.” 28 And Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” 29 He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me.” 31 Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” 32 And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased. 33 And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”
Jesus shows His power. Do you believe in this power?
Verses 22 - 59 // Jesus proclaims that He is the bread of life, that He spiritually sustains us
The third section, verses 22-59, contains Jesus' proclamation that He is the bread of life that sustains human souls.
After the food miracle, the people followed Jesus seeking more food. But Jesus admonished them, saying that they were seeking Him for the wrong reasons. He urged them not to work for the food that perishes but for the food that endures to eternal life, which He would give to them.
Jesus then declared that He is the bread of life that sustains human souls, and whoever comes to Him shall not hunger, and whoever believes in Him shall never thirst.
He went further to say that He is the living bread that came down from heaven, and whoever eats of this bread will live forever. Jesus' words sparked controversy among the Jews, who could not comprehend how they could eat His flesh and drink His blood.
However, Jesus explained that He was speaking of the spirit and life, and it was the Spirit who gives life, not the flesh.
Jesus was popular from His food miracle and now they want more of that and Jesus says you’re coming for the wrong reasons
John 6:26–27 ESV
26 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you are seeking me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. 27 Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For on him God the Father has set his seal.”
John 6:35 ESV
35 Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.
Here is the hard truth, Jesus has come down from heaven and did what God wanted Him to do.
John 6:38 ESV
38 For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will but the will of him who sent me.
What Jesus Says, is what we do
John 6:51 ESV
51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. And the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.”
Are Christians Cannibals?
The answer is no
This is a metaphor
John 6:52–59 ESV
52 The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?” 53 So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. 54 Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day. 55 For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. 56 Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him. 57 As the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever feeds on me, he also will live because of me. 58 This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like the bread the fathers ate, and died. Whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.” 59 Jesus said these things in the synagogue, as he taught at Capernaum.
Verses 60 - 71 // The truth is hard to take in, even harder to follow.
John 6:60 ESV
60 When many of his disciples heard it, they said, “This is a hard saying; who can listen to it?”
John 6:63 ESV
63 It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.
The spirit is the one who gives life. Jesus is the spirit and He is the one who gives us life.
John 6:65 ESV
65 And he said, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by the Father.”
Stay with Jesus
When your friends and family don’t follow Jesus, or maybe even decide to not follow Jesus anymore, will you stay with God, or will you go away as well?
Wrong motives don’t get you Jesus
He has been talking about this bread of life and you’ll never be hungry again. The spirit gives life and we must humble ourselves. Realize that it’s not about you, it is about Jesus
John 6:66–69 ESV
66 After this many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him. 67 So Jesus said to the twelve, “Do you want to go away as well?” 68 Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life, 69 and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God.”
