Why was the crucifixion so bad?
Death hurts, right? That is normal. So why is Christ’s death so special? Well first of all the result of sin is death. That is the penalty. We love life, but because of the sins within our flesh it causes us to start a process of death at birth. Every second you are alive is in turn one second you are closer to dying, therefore your body is slowly dying. But Christ never sinned, so He unjustifiably died.
Not only did He die, but He was murdered in a horrific way.
Process of Crucifixion:
First, they would beat the victim. Now beating someone with a stick hurts bad enough, but they went above and beyond the stick. The had sticks, rods, they had the dreadful cat of nine tails that it was deemed unlawful to put any Roman citizen to death through the crucifixion.
First, they would beat the victim. Now beating someone with a stick hurts bad enough, but they went above and beyond the stick. The had sticks, rods, they had the dreadful cat of nine tails. The cat of nine tails may sound a little funny, but what it is is a whip that has nine strands woven into it. At the end of the tails there were usually bits of bone, glass, and shards of sharp metal woven into each strand of the whip. As the whip made contact with skin it would bury its objects into the flesh, and upon retrieval it would remove whatever it was sunk into. Leaving the receiver of the punishment looking like ground hamburger meat afterwards. Many people were reported to have died during this process alone.
Next, you had the fact that Jesus claimed (accurately) that He was a king. Because of that they decided to mock Him by creating a crown for His head. Only this crown was fashioned out of large thorns rather than precious metals and gems. They smashed the thorns into the flesh on His skull and they hit Him on the head with sticks to inflict further pain to the area.
Then, they dressed Him in a kingly robe and made Him parade around.
