When the devil had finished every temptation, he left Him until an opportune time.
Luke 4:1-13 Jesus resists the temptations of Satan by knowing the truth and using the scriptures to stand in opposition to him.
And He got into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, and asked him to put out a little way from the land. And He sat down and began teaching the people from the boat.
Jesus taught
For amazement had seized him and all his companions because of the catch of fish which they had taken;
and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not fear, from now on you will be catching men.”
Jesus casted vision
It was at this time that He went off to the mountain to pray, and He spent the whole night in prayer to God.
And when day came, He called His disciples to Him and chose twelve of them, whom He also named as apostles:
Jesus prayed and looked to God for wisdom in choosing disciples. He personally invited people to follow Him.
And turning His gaze toward His disciples, He began to say, “Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.
Jesus taught us what is best for us. He held nothing back. He confronts the mind and heart with the need for character transformation. He wasn’t worried about truth confronting feelings. He points us to godly expectations, wisdom, and blessings.
Soon afterwards He went to a city called Nain; and His disciples were going along with Him, accompanied by a large crowd.
Soon afterwards, He began going around from one city and village to another, proclaiming and preaching the kingdom of God. The twelve were with Him,
and also some women who had been healed of evil spirits and sicknesses: Mary who was called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out,
and Joanna the wife of Chuza, Herod’s steward, and Susanna, and many others who were contributing to their support out of their private means.
Jesus took His disciples with Him as He did ministry. We can invite our disciples to come with us to see and do ministry together.
His disciples began questioning Him as to what this parable meant.
And He said, “To you it has been granted to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God, but to the rest it is in parables, so that seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand.
Jesus took time to explain (the meaning of His teaching) to His disciples the “mysteries of the kingdom” when they didn’t understand the parables He was sharing.
“Return to your house and describe what great things God has done for you.” So he went away, proclaiming throughout the whole city what great things Jesus had done for him.
Jesus sent the man to his house hold to give testimony to God’s power and goodness in His life. We should give testimony of great things God has done in our lives and help those we disciple to go and do the same.
Then He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, He blessed them, and broke them, and kept giving them to the disciples to set before the people.
And they all ate and were satisfied; and the broken pieces which they had left over were picked up, twelve baskets full.
Jesus invited the disciples into ministry. He gave them things to do as they serve people.
And it happened that while He was praying alone, the disciples were with Him, and He questioned them, saying, “Who do the people say that I am?”
They answered and said, “John the Baptist, and others say Elijah; but others, that one of the prophets of old has risen again.”
And He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” And Peter answered and said, “The Christ of God.”
Jesus asked questions to the disciples to hear their understanding of who society said He was, but more importantly, who they thought He was. We need to ask questions to others to gauge their understanding of truth.
Now as they were traveling along, He entered a village; and a woman named Martha welcomed Him into her home.
She had a sister called Mary, who was seated at the Lord’s feet, listening to His word.
Jesus took the time to slow down in order to sit and speak to his disciples in an intimate way. We need to make sure that we allow for opportunities to do this as well.
It happened that while Jesus was praying in a certain place, after He had finished, one of His disciples said to Him, “Lord, teach us to pray just as John also taught his disciples.”
Jesus prayed and taught the disciples to pray. This is a good model of how we should equip those we are walking along side to learn to do the disciplines that transform our lives.
“Woe to you lawyers! For you have taken away the key of knowledge; you yourselves did not enter, and you hindered those who were entering.”
Jesus exposed the bad traditions of men that hindered people from knowing the truth. He was not afraid to confront those people who acted like they knew the truth, but really didn’t. As disciples we need to learn to correct bad teaching or traditions of men that caused people to go astray from the word of God.
Now He was telling them a parable to show that at all times they ought to pray and not to lose heart,
And He also told this parable to some people who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and viewed others with contempt:
Jesus used parables at times to help the disciples learn and understand the meaning of his teaching. Jesus used parables at times to help get his point across regardless of who was listening.
When He approached Jerusalem, He saw the city and wept over it,
Jesus demonstrated real compassion for the lost, and those who rejected him. He was transparent about certain things that bothered Him. As a disciple, my heart should be sorrowful for those who are blinded to the hope and peace that only God can provide.
But Jesus was saying, “Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.” And they cast lots, dividing up His garments among themselves.
One of the criminals who were hanged there was hurling abuse at Him, saying, “Are You not the Christ? Save Yourself and us!”
But the other answered, and rebuking him said, “Do you not even fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation?
“And we indeed are suffering justly, for we are receiving what we deserve for our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong.”
And he was saying, “Jesus, remember me when You come in Your kingdom!”
And He said to him, “Truly I say to you, today you shall be with Me in Paradise.”
Even in the midst of trial, Jesus was aware of people’s need for forgiveness. He knew what was most important, a priority for those who were putting Him to death and even hanging on a cross next to Him Luke 23:39-43. He was even saving people while hanging on the cross. We as disciples should see this example of Jesus as one to emulate. Even in the midst of extreme trial, we can see people, even those against us, turn to Jesus. Both criminals were close to the Savior, but only one feared God and recognized the King. One wanted temporary salvation while the other eternal.
