Key Concepts to Review
Mark’s Framing/Presentation of Jesus’ Coming:
Mark 1:1–3 (ESV)
Jesus’ Appearance on the Scene is framed as him being the “Lord” who follows the promised “Messenger of Mal 3:1. In keeping with that he is to be the one who comes and visits the temple to provide a reckoning and judgement. He is also presented as the one who prepares YHWH path. The key thing being that John plays this part of fore-running Jesus’ ministry as Lord. As the Lord makes his way to wilderness. This establishes Jesus as at very least as agent of God/YHWH and perhaps as YHWH himself. Toward that end John comes seeking revitalization, repentance and preparation of the people for YHWH’s visitation.
