Jesus on the cross
A LOT OF PEOPLE SEE A MAN
PEOPLE SEE A GREAT HISTORICAL FIGURE
GREAT PRINCIPLES
This man Jesus was so much more than a great man, a religious figure, someone who stood for great principles…
I SEE A MIRACLE — A MAN OF MIRACLES
This man Jesus, no matter what you believe, was incredible. Maybe you don’t believe today that He was in fact the son of God. He amassed a large following. He started a movement. He changed a lot of peoples lives, and a lot great values we have today were things Jesus stood for. Treating people with respect, turning the other cheek, feed the poor, taking care of children and widows. The first hospitals and colleges in the US were started by Christians who follow Jesus.
I WANT TO TODAY TRY AND SHIFT YOUR VIEW OF JESUS. NO MATTER WHAT VIEW YOU HAD WALKING IN THE DOOR I WANT TO TALK ABOUT THIS MAN OF MIRACLES AND WHAT HE CAN DO.
JESUS HAD 37 MIRACLES DURING HIS MINISTRY THAT WE HAVE RECORDED BY MATTHEW MARK LUKE AND JOHN
I BELIEVE THIS ONE MIRACLE ILLUSTRATES WHAT JESUS WAS ALL ABOUT BETTER THAN ANY OTHER ONE. IT’S THE 14TH ONE. AND HERE’S WHY...
JESUS DIED FOR EVERYONE
JESUS DIED FOR YOU
THEY’RE THE SAME BUT THERE’S A DIFFERENCE
You see Jesus died for all but he also had you, you right here today specifically on his mind. He didn’t just bear the worlds sins but yours. He didn’t just die to give everyone life but YOU life.
JESUS WAS EXTREMELY PERSONAL
He had many time where he spoke to large crowds but even more times that he would have one on one moments with people.
IMAGINE BEING AROUND DURING THIS TIME
Religion was a huge part of the culture so most of the people during this time were raised believing and looking forward to the time when the messiah would come. He would make a way, he would save them, and it was like I said a huge part of their culture.
Also during this time there was a big idea that if you were good, good things happened to you. If bad things happened to you, sickness anything then that might you were bad or your parents were bad and God was punishing you. Now this wasn’t found in the Bible it was just something they believed.
A LOT OF TIMES IF YOU WERE BORN OR ACQUIRED SOME DISEASE OR DISABILITY Then a lot of times you were pushed out of society, frowned upon, because one people didn’t want to get it and two you were seen as someone that must have deserved it. SO you can see how if something happened to you it could completely change your life, your families life, friends life, a lot of times you would be left completely alone.
And one day when Jesus was traveling to heal a mans daughter he has an encounter with a woman that changes her life forever.
This woman had a problem that she had tried to fix for years. She searched high and low for someone who could fix her issue. Let’s jump into her story in Luke Chapter 8
Luke 8:40–43 NLT
40 On the other side of the lake the crowds welcomed Jesus, because they had been waiting for him. 41 Then a man named Jairus, a leader of the local synagogue, came and fell at Jesus’ feet, pleading with him to come home with him. 42 His only daughter, who was about twelve years old, was dying. As Jesus went with him, he was surrounded by the crowds. 43 A woman in the crowd had suffered for twelve years with constant bleeding, and she could find no cure.
Jesus is on his way to heal someone else and in the crowd was someone who also needed help
IMAGINE BEING HER
What we know is that it’s suggested that she basically was constantly on her period. And because of this she was viewed as broken, diseased, and wasn’t allowed to be around other people because they believed they could get it, and she was considered unclean if she touched you or was too close to you they thought they would then be unclean. Could not attend religious meetings until she was healed.
CAN YOU IMAGINE THIS? NOT ONLY HAVING THIS CONDITION BUT THE STIGMA THAT COMES WITH IT.
Small town. Everyone knows everyone. How must this feel for 12 years???
And no doubt she had heard about Jesus. Maybe this is the one that can change things. I’ve heard stories of the one that can heal people. She’s desperate and she needs her life to change. Doctors haven’t helped. Nothing has worked and so she makes her way outside as she hears crowds gathering. And she sees JESUS.
That’s him. Thats the one they’ve been talking about. And she decides this is the moment. I’ve heard that he can heal and if he really is who he says he is and can do what people say he can do if i can just get close enough my life can be changed.
Luke 8:44 NLT
44 Coming up behind Jesus, she touched the fringe of his robe. Immediately, the bleeding stopped.
THIS IS AMAZING!
This is the man of miracles. This woman whose life has been agonizing, who probably has no friends or family, has all of the sudden had her entire life turned around.
But what happens next she didn’t expect.
Luke 8:45–46 NLT
45 “Who touched me?” Jesus asked. Everyone denied it, and Peter said, “Master, this whole crowd is pressing up against you.” 46 But Jesus said, “Someone deliberately touched me, for I felt healing power go out from me.”
THIS IS NOT WHAT SHE WANTED.
Am in trouble? What if Jesus is mad and reverses this healing. Also i didn’t want everyone around to know what was happening.
Luke 8:47 NLT
47 When the woman realized that she could not stay hidden, she began to tremble and fell to her knees in front of him. The whole crowd heard her explain why she had touched him and that she had been immediately healed.
I CAN’T IMAGINE BEING HER AT THIS MOMENT
She’s felt broken for years. She goes out in faith believing she would be healed. She finds healing but now she’s the center of attention. This is not what she wanted to happen.
NO DOUBT THE CROWD IS LIKE “ahhhhhhh Jesus gonna get herrrr.... You in troubleeeeeeeee.....”
What they saw was a woman who should be ashamed. What they saw was an outcast and someone who was unclean.
BUT JESUS SAW SOMETHING DIFFERENT
Luke 8:48 NLT
48 “Daughter,” he said to her, “your faith has made you well. Go in peace.”
JESUS SAW SOMETHING DIFFERENT. JESUS SAW SOMEONE HE LOVED AND THAT HE WAS ABOUT TO DIE FOR. On His way to help someone else, this woman is healed and he could have let her go, not said a thing, not drawn attention. BUT HE WANTED TO MAKE SURE SHE KNEW THAT FAITH IN JESUS HAD CHANGED HER LIFE and for everyone else to know that he came for those who the world says weren’t worthy of him.
YOU AND I ARE THIS WOMAN
Romans 3:23 NLT
23 For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.
ALL OF US HAVE THE SIN CONDITION
It’s something we need fixed and it’s something that only Jesus can change. We are born with this sin condition.
BUT 2,000 YEARS AGO JESUS PAID IT ALL ON THE CROSS, AND ON A SUNDAY 2,000 YEARS AGO HE ROSE SO THAT YOU AND I COULD HAVE FORGIVENESS AND LIFE
JESUS DIED FOR EVERYONE
JESUS DIED FOR YOU
FOR THE BROKEN
LOST
HURTING
ADDICTED
TIRED
ON THE CROSS HE DIED FOR ALL BECAUSE ALL ARE IN NEED OF FORGIVENESS
Just like that woman couldn’t heal herself WE CANNOT PAY FOR OUR OWN SIN only Jesus can do that.
John 3:16–17 NLT
16 “For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. 17 God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him.
AND OF ALL THE MIRACLES JESUS DID HIS RESURRECTION WAS THE MOST AMAZING MIRACLE IN ALL OF HISTORY — BUT THE REAL MIRACLE TODAY IS THAT HE’S RIGHT HERE WITH US AND CAN CHANGE YOUR LIFE IN AN INSTANT
MAN OF MIRACLES SONG
Luke 24:1–6 NLT
1 But very early on Sunday morning the women went to the tomb, taking the spices they had prepared. 2 They found that the stone had been rolled away from the entrance. 3 So they went in, but they didn’t find the body of the Lord Jesus. 4 As they stood there puzzled, two men suddenly appeared to them, clothed in dazzling robes. 5 The women were terrified and bowed with their faces to the ground. Then the men asked, “Why are you looking among the dead for someone who is alive? 6 He isn’t here! He is risen from the dead! Remember what he told you back in Galilee,
