Luke 23:33-43

I. The ridicule of the People

Rulers
Luke 23:35 “35 And the people stood by, looking on. And even the rulers were sneering at Him, saying, “He saved others; let Him save Himself if this is the Christ of God, His Chosen One.””
Luke 23:13 NASB95
13 Pilate summoned the chief priests and the rulers and the people,
Matthew 27:41–43 NASB95
41 In the same way the chief priests also, along with the scribes and elders, were mocking Him and saying, 42 “He saved others; He cannot save Himself. He is the King of Israel; let Him now come down from the cross, and we will believe in Him. 43 He trusts in God; let God rescue Him now, if He delights in Him; for He said, ‘I am the Son of God.’ ”
Soldiers
Luke 23:34 “34b And they cast lots, dividing up His garments among themselves.” 36-38 “36 The soldiers also mocked Him, coming up to Him, offering Him sour wine, 37 and saying, “If You are the King of the Jews, save Yourself!” 38 Now there was also an inscription above Him, “THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.””
Matthew 27:33–37 NASB95
33 And when they came to a place called Golgotha, which means Place of a Skull, 34 they gave Him wine to drink mixed with gall; and after tasting it, He was unwilling to drink. 35 And when they had crucified Him, they divided up His garments among themselves by casting lots. 36 And sitting down, they began to keep watch over Him there. 37 And above His head they put up the charge against Him which read, “THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.”
The Criminals
Luke 23:39 “39 One of the criminals who were hanged there was hurling abuse at Him, saying, “Are You not the Christ? Save Yourself and us!””
Matthew 27:44 NASB95
44 The robbers who had been crucified with Him were also insulting Him with the same words.
Passerbys
Matthew 27:39–43 NASB95
39 And those passing by were hurling abuse at Him, wagging their heads 40 and saying, “You who are going to destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save Yourself! If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross.” 41 In the same way the chief priests also, along with the scribes and elders, were mocking Him and saying, 42 “He saved others; He cannot save Himself. He is the King of Israel; let Him now come down from the cross, and we will believe in Him. 43 He trusts in God; let God rescue Him now, if He delights in Him; for He said, ‘I am the Son of God.’ ”

II. The realization of the criminal

Luke 23:40 NASB95
40 But the other answered, and rebuking him said, “Do you not even fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation?
The confession of the criminal
Luke 23:41 “41 “And we indeed are suffering justly, for we are receiving what we deserve for our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong.””
Exalting Jesus in Luke (The Conversation of Thieves (23:39–43))
“When we were enabled to see the truth about ourselves we were better able to see the truth about Christ.”
The belief of the criminal
Luke 23:42 “42 And he was saying, “Jesus, remember me when You come in Your kingdom!””

III. The restoration of Jesus

Jesus makes two statements...
Luke 23:34 “34 But Jesus was saying, “Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.” And they cast lots, dividing up His garments among themselves.”
Romans 5:8 NASB95
8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
Luke 23:43 “43 And He said to him, “Truly I say to you, today you shall be with Me in Paradise.””
Romans 10:9 NASB95
9 that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved;

Conclusion

Luke 23:34 “34 But Jesus was saying, “Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.” And they cast lots, dividing up His garments among themselves.”
Luke 23:28–31 NASB95
28 But Jesus turning to them said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, stop weeping for Me, but weep for yourselves and for your children. 29 “For behold, the days are coming when they will say, ‘Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bore, and the breasts that never nursed.’ 30 “Then they will begin to say to the mountains, ‘Fall on us,’ and to the hills, ‘Cover us.’ 31 “For if they do these things when the tree is green, what will happen when it is dry?”
Ephesians 2
