In The Wilderness
Jesus was led into the wilderness to be tempted by Satan
Jesus being full of the Spirit did not fall to temptation
Satan using the same type of temptations that gets us all
the same that Adam and Eve fell for in the garden
Satan in the garden used God’s words in the temptation
but they were twisted
to Jesus Satan uses the Word of God to tempt Jesus
this is what we are looking at this morning
the twisting of scripture to make God’s word seem to say something that it is not
our key verse is V 10 and 11
and as we read the rest of the account we notice that Jesus also used the scriptures to fight the temptations
we are going to look at some passages that are popular today, that don’t mean what people want hem to mean
we want to rightly divide the word of truth and use it correctly in our daily Christian walk
Read Luke 4 1-13.

Psalm 91.
Psalm 91.
The scripture that satan used is from Psalm 91.
this psalm is a beautiful psalm that we go to in times of trouble
and we are reminded of the Majesty of God and His protection
to those who Abide in The Most High
and make The Throne room your dwelling place
it speaks of protection and safety
it speaks of the peace that is ours if we put our trust in Him
as a child of God
read psalm 91.
Satan used V 11-12 to temp Jesus
Satan took Jesus to the top of the temple and told Jesus to jump because the angels would protect Him
isn’t that what the Bible says?
what? you don’t trust the Bible?
but the problem is this psalm is talking about every day living. not jumping off cliffs and putting God to the test
this sounds more like someone say “I’m going to do this Hold my beer”
and why did satan stop there and not continue to V 13
satan is known as a roaring lion and a serpent
Jesus was tempted with scripture but it was out of context

people have snatched this verse out of the pages of scripture to use for everything from helping to do laundry to
scale mount Everest.
so what the context of this verse
what do the 2 verses before say?
what does the verse after it say?

Not that I speak from want, for I learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am.
I know how to get along with humble means, and I also know how to live in abundance; in any and all things I have learned the secret of being filled and going hungry, both of having abundance and suffering need.
I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.
I can Endure all things through Him who strengthens me.
Nevertheless, you have done well to fellowship with me in my affliction.
this a great verse in times of persecution
in times of trials
but how can this verse be used wrong?
how can we be tempted by using this verse?
we could try to do things outside of our abilities and stand on the promise of this verse and fail.
then blame God for our failure.
not trust in His word for a period of time because you got disenfranchised
because you believed the out of context verse
How about this one
and My people who are called by My name humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their evil ways, then I will listen from heaven, I will forgive their sin, and I will heal their land.
this is not America
we don’t have a temple
we are not the children of Israel
today we are living in the New Covenant
today’s blessings are spiritual blessings
today’s blessings heavenly blessings
or how bout this one
‘For I know the plans that I have for you,’ declares Yahweh, ‘plans for peace and not for calamity, to give you a future and a hope.
Again context this verse by itself looks wonderful to anyone
this is one of those verses someone quotes to someone to make them feel better Like
And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to His purpose.
this verse tells us through this we will be more Christ like
getting back to Jeremiah
“For thus says Yahweh, ‘When seventy years have been fulfilled for Babylon, I will visit you and establish My good word to you, to return you to this place.
‘For I know the plans that I have for you,’ declares Yahweh, ‘plans for peace and not for calamity, to give you a future and a hope.
‘Then you will call upon Me and come and pray to Me, and I will listen to you.
‘You will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart.
‘I will be found by you,’ declares Yahweh, ‘and I will return your fortunes and will gather you from all the nations and from all the places where I have banished you,’ declares Yahweh, ‘and I will cause you to return to the place from where I sent you into exile.’
Be very careful when you apply verses to your life
Satan wants you to apply them out of context
that is why they are so popular
Satan used scripture to tempt Jesus
but he used it in a wrong way
Jesus on the other hand used scripture correctly to show who he really is- a liar
anything that is not a total truth is a lie
there are dozens of other verses the we want to take out of context
do not judge - the only verse a lot of people know
God is love - how can he send anyone to hell
an eye for an eye tooth for a tooth
Whole religions use out of context verses to give themselves credibility
Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth.
