WE HAVE A SAVIOR WHO IS WORTHY OF OUR WHOLEHEARTED TRUST INTIMATELY
This section follows the passage about the not falling away from the living God; the Word of God, and the Work of God in Jesus the section on the rest of God, and tells us how to enter His rest; uniting what we have heard in the Word of God with faith that He is faithful in what He says.
How do we enter His Rest, unite what we have heard, with faith? (He finished His work, it was good, and He rested! Jesus finished His work of purification and atonement for our sins and He rested. He sat down at the right hand of God because He was finished, His work was complete, perfect, it was good. We are to believe it, trust it, live based on the truth of it? Why?
Note verse 4:14, after the part about the Word of God being able to separate soul and spirit, joints and marrow. That is, what is said and believed by people such as the children of God in the wilderness, the Word of God can discern hardness of heart (just hearing what God has said) and when one truly unites what is said with faith (God I believe You, trust You and I will act like it with Your help).
Note verse 14, “No creature is hidden from Him, to whom we must give and account”. Hebrews 9:27 “And just as it is appointed for people to die once—and after this, judgment—” We will all give an account, whether we held on to our confession or not.
Note also in these verses:
14 - having a high priest .... an essential aspect to entering the rest of God: because God became the Son of God, the man Jesus who became our high priest, our sin is covered and paid for, we are eternally loved and care for and we can bank on it
14 - the Son of God contrasted with us, sinful needy people - the great God did that for us, for me
15 - we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses ...our brother 2:11, the sympathizing, tempted, obedient & without sin
16 - let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace… that we may receive grace, mercy, and help in time of need

WE HAVE A SAVIOR WHO KNOWS US
Who he is:
1- chosen from among men
1- appointed in service to God
What he does:
1 - to act on behalf of men in relation to God
- to offer gifts (special offerings) and sacrifices (blood shed as atonement for sins)
What he is able to do:
2 - deal gently with the ignorant and going astray
(he himself is beset with weakness)
3 - offer sacrifice for his own sins and the sins of the people
4 - must be called by God
Jesus’ Qualification as High Priest
Jesus’ Qualification as High Priest
5 In the same way,
the Messiah did not exalt Himself to become a high priest,
but
the One who said to Him, You are My Son; today I have become Your Father,
6 also said in another passage, You are a priest forever in the order of Melchizedek.
5:7-10 Jesus' Example and Role
5:7-10 Jesus' Example and Role
7 - offered up prayers and supplications, with loud cries and tears
- to Him who was able to save Him from death
- He was heard because of His reverence
8 - He learned obedience through suffering
9 - made the perfect, qualified sacrifice, source of eternal salvation
(to all who obey Him - by uniting what they know with faith -trusting Him)
10 - designated by God a high priest after the order of Melchizedek
Conclusion
Conclusion
Believers: Hold fast to the confession that Jesus is the only perfect and qualified High Priest for you. Don’t harden your heart, keep trusting, keep going with Jesus
Not a believer: Realize again, that we all have to give an account, believe today that Jesus as high priest has satisfied God’s just wrath against your sin and believe that His sacrifice is completely sufficient for you to enter His Rest, now and eternally.
