Chapter 7 has 3 parts
The disbelief of His brothers 1-9
The big debate 10-36
The division 37-52
3 parts.
Education and Authority. 10-24
The Question. 25-31
Doubt, Disbelief, and Dumfounded. 32-36
3 groups of people.
The Jews (religious authorities)
The people (those who traveled to Jerusalem for the feast)
The people from Jerusalem
Vs 10-24: Education and Authority.
The rumor mill. 10-13
Jesus went without pump and circumstance.
He would come to Jerusalem with a crowd and shouts of adoration later.
The Jews were looking for Him.
They wanted to kill Him.
There was a lot of debate among the people about Jesus.
No one would speak openly about Him because they feared the religious establishment.
His parents said these things because they feared the Jews, for the Jews had agreed already that if anyone confessed that He was Christ, he would be put out of the synagogue.
Nevertheless even among the rulers many believed in Him, but because of the Pharisees they did not confess Him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue;
After this, Joseph of Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly, for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus; and Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took the body of Jesus.
Vv. 14-24 The Jews and the people question His authority.
Seminary 14-15.
Who taught Jesus?
He didnt go to any of their sanctioned schools.
How is it He has such a grasp on Theology?
Jesus taught with authority.
This demonstrates His command knowledge of scripture.
The Jews taught from authorities, often quoting other Rabbis.
Not all seminaries are created equal.
They had all the right schooling but lacked full understanding.
Their teachings were often postulatory relying on various rabbinical commentary.
Jesus didnt need seminary He is God.
Sound doctrine. 16-18
Jesus taught what He knew
He knew what He heard and saw
He was sent with a purpose
The will of God.
If the Pharisees submitted to do the will of God they would have known where His doctrine came from God.
Likewise all of our doctrine is based on the Word of God alone.
Jesus could speak on His own authority.
He is God He and the Father are one His authority is sufficient.
Jesus always proclaimed His mission was from the Father.
Jesus was submitted to the will of the Father.
Yet He is equal with the Father.
Jesus models proper submission.
He was fully man and submitted Himself to the Father.
He was fully God sent by the Father as the divine sacrifice worthy to take away the sins of the world.
Like wise we should submit ourselves fully to Jesus as our intercessor who intercedes on our behalf to the Father.
Our children submit to us etc.
I can claim authority for the Bible but not all my interpretation of it.
Jesus could claim absolute authority for all that He taught.
Seeking your own glory.
Those who come with special doctrine or additional doctrine or requirements is out for self gain.
Before we came to Christ we sought our own will.
How do we know who is telling the truth?
Seek the will of God.
“When men are wholly, completely consecrated to the will of God and want to do that above everything else, then they find out that Christ’s teaching is divine, that it is the teaching of God.” Dr. G. Campbell Morgan
Warren W. Wiersbe, The Bible Exposition Commentary, vol. 1 (Wheaton, IL: Victor Books, 1996), 316.Jesus
Missing the point 19-25
Jesus points them back to their own doctrine given to them by God through Moses.
They cant keep the Law, no one can, yet they want to kill Jesus for not keeping their man made rules in keeping the Law.
The out of towners are confused, they didn't know the religious establishment wanted Him dead.
Jesus addresses the Jews (pharisees) pointing out their own works on the Sabbath (Shabbat)
Its unlawful to do any work on Shabbat yet they will circumcise a baby if the 8th day falls on Shabbat.
It was okay to cut away yet Jesus couldn't make someone whole.
Circumcision is a covenant sign showing their submission to God.
Like baptism it is an outward sign of an inward reality.
Its not about the circumcision of the flesh but of the heart.
Shabbat is about the rest we enter into with God
Jesus is the Lord of the Sabbath, Matthew 12:1-8, Mark 2:23-28, Luke 6:1-5, the sabbath was created for man Mark 2:27.
This is our time to spend with the Lord 1/7th of our week dedicated to Him.
Its for our health, we cant labor 7 days a week
When we come to Jesus we enter His rest and we celebrate the all He has done for us. rest refresh with Him and our family.
Isaiah said in Isa. 58:13
“If you turn away your foot from the Sabbath,
From doing your pleasure on My holy day,
And call the Sabbath a delight,
The holy day of the Lord honorable,
And shall honor Him, not doing your own ways,
Nor finding your own pleasure,
Nor speaking your own words,
It is a delight to do the will of the Lord and finding our rest in Him.
Vv. 25-26: the townies knew
They knew they wanted to kill Jesus and did nothing about it.
Did this mean they believed He was Messiah?
Vv 27:
They answered their own question on His divinity.
This cant be the Christ because He is from Nazareth.
Isaiah 7:14 “Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel.”
Micah 5:1 “Now gather yourself in troops, O daughter of troops; He has laid siege against us; They will strike the judge of Israel with a rod on the cheek.”
Hosea 11:1 ““When Israel was a child, I loved him, And out of Egypt I called My son.”
Vv 28-29. Jesus reply.
True they knew where He lived but Jesus wasn't just born like the ordinary man.
He was sent from Heaven, Nazareth is where He may have grown up but it is not HIs home.
We too are not of this world and this is not our home.
Jesus proclaims His divinity.
Jesus is saying He existed before He was born.
some believed and others wanted to kill Him.
Even though their belief was based on miracles.
Even some of the Pharisees would come to believe in Jesus.
Doubt, Disbelief, and Dumfounded. 32-36
They wanted to arrest Him for blaspheme.
They wanted to arrest Him and kill Him
Jesus tells them their time to take Him and kill Him will come.
Jesus talks of His death and resurrection.
They will seek the Christ but not find Him.
Because they rejected the chief cornerstone.
They had the blueprints, they studied the blueprints, the memorized the blueprints and yet they reject the Chief Cornerstone.
Because they rejected Him they cant go to be with Him.
Their trust in themselves and their own understanding of the Word blinded them to God.
They let their greed and lust for power corrupt their standing and position as shepherds for the Lord.
Closing:
What does this tell us today?
Who do we place our trust in?
Are we turning worship into a ritual and a burden?
Are we seeking our own will or the Lords?
Are we focusing solely on our church our pastor our denomination and loosing sight of the body of Christ?
Die to yourself
seek the Lord
meditate on His word
see the world through His eyes, see the needs of those around us.
and make our Sabbath be about Him!
