As chapter 3 begins, Paul plays devil's advocate here by arguing out of both sides of his mouth. The question at issue is the faithfulness of God in the light of his justice. In addressing the overall question, Paul poses a series of thought-provoking questions to point us to a clear understanding that God's faithfulness is based upon His own perfect nature rather than on any exterior component of man or nature.
