1a - Hebrews 9:15
Hebrews 9:15 ESV
15 Therefore he is the mediator of a new covenant, so that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance, since a death has occurred that redeems them from the transgressions committed under the first covenant.
Therefore - since Christ paid the price.
mediator - the go between. The executor of the estate.
new covenant - new agreement.
who are called -
promised eternal inheritance,
death
redeems from the transgression commited under the first covenant -
1b - Hebrews 9:16-17
Hebrews 9:16–17 ESV
16 For where a will is involved, the death of the one who made it must be established. 17 For a will takes effect only at death, since it is not in force as long as the one who made it is alive.

1c - Hebrews 9:18-22
Hebrews 9:18–22 ESV
18 Therefore not even the first covenant was inaugurated without blood. 19 For when every commandment of the law had been declared by Moses to all the people, he took the blood of calves and goats, with water and scarlet wool and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book itself and all the people, 20 saying, “This is the blood of the covenant that God commanded for you.” 21 And in the same way he sprinkled with the blood both the tent and all the vessels used in worship. 22 Indeed, under the law almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins.
Why blood why death? - Could he just forgive since he was God? No, God is Holy.
Either you die to your sin or you die in your sin.
Recap of old story. Even the old one has ....

point 2 - Hebrews 9:23-28

Hebrews 9:23–24 ESV
23 Thus it was necessary for the copies of the heavenly things to be purified with these rites, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. 24 For Christ has entered, not into holy places made with hands, which are copies of the true things, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God on our behalf.
on earth it was just a copy, so the sacrifice was work.
Hebrews 9:25–26 ESV
25 Nor was it to offer himself repeatedly, as the high priest enters the holy places every year with blood not his own, 26 for then he would have had to suffer repeatedly since the foundation of the world. But as it is, he has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.
They would have to keep doing this.
But he did this once, we will talk more about this next week.
Hebrews 9:27–28 ESV
27 And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment, 28 so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him.
INTRODUCTION: Great news, I got an email from a Nigerian prince, he told me that I could get an inheritance.

Jesus’ death killed your old self.

That might seem violent, but not all killing is bad. Ie kill spider, you do the work of the Lord.
Hebrews 9:15 ESV
15 Therefore he is the mediator of a new covenant, so that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance, since a death has occurred that redeems them from the transgressions committed under the first covenant.
Therefore - Since he passed through heaven and made a sacrice.
mediator - Josh called me the badest illustration.
inheritance - parents thankfully not dead, but every time they go on a vacation, I’m like really guys. My kids need to go to college someday.
redeems - it also paid the price for your sins.
Hebrews 9:16–17 ESV
16 For where a will is involved, the death of the one who made it must be established. 17 For a will takes effect only at death, since it is not in force as long as the one who made it is alive.
will - same word as covenant.
how do we get an inheritance? Through a will.
death- someone must die for a will to go in effect.
So this new will/covenant will only take effect.
Andre-Francois Raffray thought he had a great deal 30 years ago: He would pay a 90-year-old woman 2,500 francs (about $500) a month until she died, then move into her grand apartment in a town Vincent van Gogh once roamed. But this Christmas, Mr. Raffray died at age 77, having laid out the equivalent of more than $184,000 for an apartment he never got to live in. On the same day, Jeanne Calment, now listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the world's oldest person at 120, dined on foie gras, duck thighs, cheese and chocolate cake at her nursing home near the sought-after apartment in Arles, northwest of Marseilles in the south of France. She need not worry about losing income. Although the amount Mr. Raffray already paid is more than twice the apartment's current market value, his widow is obligated to keep sending that monthly check. If Mrs. Calment outlives her, too, then the Raffray children and grandchildren will have to pay.
"In life, one sometimes makes bad deals," Mrs. Calment said on her birthday last Feb. 21.
Hebrews 9:18–21 ESV
18 Therefore not even the first covenant was inaugurated without blood. 19 For when every commandment of the law had been declared by Moses to all the people, he took the blood of calves and goats, with water and scarlet wool and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book itself and all the people, 20 saying, “This is the blood of the covenant that God commanded for you.” 21 And in the same way he sprinkled with the blood both the tent and all the vessels used in worship.
Like Lysol when you are sick.
Exodus 24:6 - The blood had to cleanse. “There is a fountain filled with blood. drawn from emmanuaell side.” weird. what can wash me what as snow, nothing but the blood of Jesus.
They thought early Christians were cannibals.
Hebrews 9:22 ESV
22 Indeed, under the law almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins.
But why does sin require death? Could God have a changed the rules?
Sin is opposite of God. He is Holy, to allow sin in would make him unholy. When something dies we are made new (Galatians 2??)

His blood purifies your past.

Every sin required death. But because there was a death your sin has been paid for. ....
If the earthly stuff needed purification and it was just a shadow of heaven, then Jesus being our high priest would also need that too.
We will talk about that extensively next week. But unlike multiple ansimals, there is only one savior. So he would have to be resacrificed.
Hebrews 9:27 ESV
27 And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment,
This is true for you. No matter how rich you are, how much kale you eat, etc....(Funny illustration lookup here)
I hear this alot, I say this alot. But I never realized the context.

His blood seals your future.

Hebrews 9:28 ESV
28 so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him.
If we all die once, and jesus already died. Then he aint dying again!
Comparison between palm Sunday and return. Jesus makes all things clean story.
CONCLUSION:
mARK 1:40-44
Mark 1:40–44 ESV
40 And a leper came to him, imploring him, and kneeling said to him, “If you will, you can make me clean.” 41 Moved with pity, he stretched out his hand and touched him and said to him, “I will; be clean.” 42 And immediately the leprosy left him, and he was made clean. 43 And Jesus sternly charged him and sent him away at once, 44 and said to him, “See that you say nothing to anyone, but go, show yourself to the priest and offer for your cleansing what Moses commanded, for a proof to them.”
