Four Pictures of a believer
33 Teach me, O Lord, the way of Your statutes, And I shall keep it to the end.
34 Give me understanding, and I shall keep Your law; Indeed, I shall observe it with my whole heart.
35 Make me walk in the path of Your commandments, For I delight in it.
36 Incline my heart to Your testimonies, And not to covetousness.
37 Turn away my eyes from looking at worthless things, And revive me in Your way.
38 Establish Your word to Your servant, Who is devoted to fearing You.
39 Turn away my reproach which I dread, For Your judgments are good.
40 Behold, I long for Your precepts; Revive me in Your righteousness.
I. Sojourner. VS 33-34
VS 33
33 Teach me, O Lord, the way of Your statutes, And I shall keep it to the end.
Teach: To point out.
Way: Road, course of life.
Statutes: Something prescribed. A prescribed task.
Keep: Maintain, obey.
End: End of everything.
1. As a believer we should see God’s word as a path to be followed, a sure way through the wilderness.
a. It doesn’t do any good to ask for directions if we don’t remember them, or don’t follow them.
b. God lead us through our path in life. It may not always be an easy path, but he will lead us.
c. After the Moses and his people crossed the Red Sea they didn’t has no map, no path, no signs, no GPS. But they did have a cloudy pillar which God led them by.
d. The easiest way to go would have been east straight into Cannon, but God led them south. This was a difficult land to travel. Elab
f. God never promises us an easy path when we follow him.
VS 34
34 Give me understanding, and I shall keep Your law; Indeed, I shall observe it with my whole heart.
Give me understanding: Act wisely/distinguish/discern. James 1:5
Keep: Maintain/obey.
Yea, I shall observe: To have charge of to keep.
“Whole heart”
1. A man can fill his whole heart with knowledge and still have no real understanding.
a. We have knowledge of God available to us by reading the Bible. It is an understanding that to follow what God has called us to do.
b. There times when God will call us even when we don’t understand, but we yes. But most likely if we meditate on God’s word He will give us an understanding.
c. God has a goal for us in our life as a sojourner in the wilderness.
II. Soldier. VS 35-36
VS 35
35 Make me walk in the path of Your commandments, For I delight in it.
Make me go: Hebrew word to put a string on a bow. Do so by bending it.
For therein I do delight: Desire/having pleasure in.
1. What the writer is saying her is. Make me do something I enjoy. (Elab)
a. You don’t have to make a little boy eat ice cream, but you may have to make him eat his greens, or green beans.
b. What is Tthe reason the writer here says make me do the thing I find pleasure in doing. (go in the path of thy commandment)
c. There is the “old man” and there is the “new man” Rom 7:22-23
d. The writer wanted God to make him obedient. He was wanting God to make his decisions correspond with his desires.
VS 36
36 Incline my heart to Your testimonies, And not to covetousness.
Incline: Stretch out.
Testimonies: Witness.
Covetousness: Gain.
1. The writer has just told us that he delights in God’s law. But he needs that to be reinforced and strengthened.
a. There can be a up and down effect in a spiritual life. But we should want it to be on the
b. There are different snuggles for different people. For the writer of this Psalm it was covetousness. Elab on the help he was asking of the Lord.
c. By coveting we do our will and not Gods. The more time we spend in God’s word, (a quiet time) the more we will know God’s will for us, and not lusting after our own needs.
III. Servant. VS 37-38
VS 37
37 Turn away my eyes from looking at worthless things, And revive me in Your way.
1. Turn away mine eyes: Look the other way.
a. One of the greatest ways to have a spiritual victory is to look the other way.
b. One way maybe the greatest way of temptation to come our way is through our eyes.
Gen. 3:6; II Sam 11:2
c. Sinful things have an attraction. Elab
d. The writer here wanted is eyes to be controlled.
e. Quicken: Restore. To thy ways. Elab
f. He wanted inner strength to keep his eyes God’s ways.
VS 38
38 Establish Your word to Your servant, Who is devoted to fearing You.
1. The servant that is that is devoted to thy fear (reverence)
a. As servants of God we could be in awe of him. Elab.
b. Stablish: Has a meaning to strengthen. God’s word will strengthen us.
c. Three different ways to read God’s word.
1. Those that read it and forsake it. They deliberately turn their backs on it. They want no part of it.
2. Those that read it and forget it. They don’t deliberately rebel against it. They simply allow others things to be more important.
3. Those that read it and fear it. It gets a hold of them and lead them, shows them the way of the Lord.
IV. Saint. VS 39-40
VS 39
39 Turn away my reproach which I dread, For Your judgments are good.
Reproach: Scorn/Taunt of enemy.
Fear: To be afraid.
1. He felt the scorn of his enemy.
a. That kind of fear can rule our lives. We need the Lord to rule our lives.
VS 40
40 Behold, I long for Your precepts; Revive me in Your righteousness.
Longed: Desire.
Precepts: God’s way.
1. He wanted to be more than just good. He wanted to be like God Himself. (READ REST OF VERSE)
In Romans 7 Paul longed to have a victorious life. Romans 7:22
a. While Paul long for a victorious life he battled with himself. Romans 7:24
