INTRODUCTION
(ILL) church signs….Respect your parents, they passed school without Google…Bring your sin to the altar and drop it like it’s hot!…Our church is like fudge, sweet with a few nuts…Tweet others as you would like to be tweeted…Don’t give up, Moses was once a basket case…having trouble sleeping, we have sermons, come hear one…Walmart is not the only saving place
That is a great one to end on b/c it reminds us that our main mission is a saving mission and that is b/c the Head of the Church is a Savior
Luke 19:10 NIV
10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”
A series on the names of Jesus…we did Lord and Christ b/c they are used most often…this name is connected with the first two names
Luke 2:10–11 NIV
10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.
We already established that He is Christ and Lord but the Angels said the good news is that He is a Savior If He was not a Savior then Christ and Lord wouldn’t be good news The NT proclaimed that He had a desire to save…He was also able/competent to save
Hebrews 7:25 NIV
25 Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them.
HE IS ABLE TO SAVE
Why is He able to save?
He is able to save because He is God
In the OT, Savior was a description of God Many times in Psalms it is written “the God of our salvation”…not just about salvation and sin…He can rescue us from situations that only He can do something about In Psalms the writer could be sick…he could be surrounded by enemies = and he calls out for salvation When we get to the NT and we talk about sin and we need rescuing…we need salvation
1 Timothy 2:3–4 NIV
3 This is good, and pleases God our Savior, 4 who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.
We have to talk about God as Savior b/c we want to make sure that we understand that Jesus coming onto the scene as Savior did not change God’s mind and make Him want to start saving people and turn away from His wrath/justice Jesus showed us clearly what God’s attitude has always been…God has always been in the saving business
(ILL) holy man walking by a river one day and there was an old tree with a limb hanging out right above to surface of the water…there was a scorpion on that limb…he tried to reach out and save that scorpion and every time he did that scorpion tried to strike him…someone comes along “you fool, don’t you know that it is the nature of the scorpion to strike”…yes, but it my nature is to save and should I change my nature if the scorpion will not change his
God is like that and He sees the world filled with PPL who are dead in their sin and rebellious to their core and are even called enemies of God but He will not change who He is…He wants to save God sent His son to the world and gave Him the name JESUS = The Lord Saves…Jesus can save b/c He is God
Titus 3:4–7 NIV
4 But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, 5 he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, 6 whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7 so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life.
The God who saves has come as Jesus and Jesus the savior is the way God is saving people The mission of Jesus is a rescue mission…why can He do it…is b/c He is God The world picks inadequate saviors…careers…success…fame…addictions…substances…relationships We know people that need a savior…lost people in our family…neighborhoods
He is able to save because He died
Jesus could not save us and save Himself…our sins required death…it was either us or Him
1 John 4:10 NIV
10 This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.
Salvation demanded an atonement and atonement demanded a perfect and willing sacrifice
(ILL) 1790 America was in trouble…the 13 colonies had huge debts b/c of the war…how could they pay the money back to their citizens…Assumption Act of 1790…the states were relieved of the debt that they could not pay
Our sin was a debt that we could not pay…assumption act of 30AD…Jesus went to a cross and assumed the debt He is able to save b/c God found His offering to be perfect Jesus could save b/c He was righteous…it fulfilled the Law and satisfied the Law Never forget what it cost Jesus to be Savior
(ILL) there was a man that owned a restaurant and he let every CHR eat for free…beside his cash register was a six inch nail so he could remember the price that was paid for his sins
It takes more than being a martyr to be a savior
He is able to save because He lives
(ILL) I serve a risen Savior, He’s in the world today; I know that He is living whatever men may say; I see His hand of mercy, I hear His voice of cheer, And just the time I need Him, He’s always near.
He lives, He lives, Christ Jesus lives today! He walks with me and talks with me along life’s narrow way. He lives, He lives, Salvation to impart! You ask me how I know He lives? He lives within my heart.
Romans 4:25 NIV
25 He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification.
Can any other savior make a claim like that…no one else can say that
(ILL) 1924 Vladimir Lenin died…glass coffin in Moscow…many PPL have gone to see him…inscription = he was the greatest leader of all people of all time, he was the lord of a new humanity, he was the savior of the world”
I need a Savior that is mightier than death
2 Timothy 1:9–10 NIV
9 He has saved us and called us to a holy life—not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time, 10 but it has now been revealed through the appearing of our Savior, Christ Jesus, who has destroyed death and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.
Only one Savior has said that He was the Savior after the grave…only one can save you from the grave Because He lives He can guard your salvation that He has given you How can I know that I am saved…b/c the salvation that He died to give you, He now lives to keep it
Romans 5:10 NIV
10 For if, while we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life!
ROMANS 8:34
Romans 8:34 NIV
34 Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us.
HE IS ABLE TO SAVE COMPLETELY
He is able to save body and soul
He can save the whole person…our after life theology is more Greek than Biblical The after life is not just about the soul…it is not a bunch disembodied spirits flying around in the clouds The Bible teaches the resurrection of the body The word “save” is used many times in the healing ministry of Jesus “To the uttermost” KJV (HEB. 7:25)…it is used one other time
Hebrews 7:25 KJV 1900
25 Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.
Luke 13:12–13 NIV
12 When Jesus saw her, he called her forward and said to her, “Woman, you are set free from your infirmity.” 13 Then he put his hands on her, and immediately she straightened up and praised God.
Woman had been sick for 18 years…could not stand up…sick to the uttermost…she was hopeless His saving ministry is a visible evidence of His power to rescue His PPL Jesus did not heal everyone and today also…but when I am saved that means the Devil does not keep any part of me
Philippians 3:20–21 NIV
20 But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, 21 who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body.
He is able to save anybody at anytime
1 Timothy 1:15 NIV
15 Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the worst.
He can save to the uttermost of any sinner of any time…even the thief on the cross…that guy makes more PPL nervous than anyone else in the Bible but it should give us more hope than anybody else It is never too late to come to God Everybody needs saving…never too bad…too hopeless…too late
He is able to save now and then
He can keep what He has bought…I am saved…I will be saved…I am being saved I still need rescuing
2 Timothy 4:18 NIV
18 The Lord will rescue me from every evil attack and will bring me safely to his heavenly kingdom. To him be glory for ever and ever. Amen.
The God who died for salvation lives to keep that salvation He is saving me now and He will save me then We are waiting for Him to come and take us home…then my salvation will be complete and we will understand it It will take us an eternity to praise Him for it
(ILL) Man of sorrows what a name
for the Son of God, who came
ruined sinners to reclaim:
Hallelujah, what a Savior!
Bearing shame and scoffing rude,
in my place condemned he stood,
sealed my pardon with his blood:
Hallelujah, what a Savior!
Guilty, helpless, lost were we;
blameless Lamb of God was he,
sacrificed to set us free:
Hallelujah, what a Savior!
He was lifted up to die;
"It is finished" was his cry;
now in heaven exalted high:
Hallelujah, what a Savior!
When he comes, our glorious King,
all his ransomed home to bring,
then anew this song we'll sing:
Hallelujah, what a Savior!
